Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

The thing is that the movies dictate the mainstream. I am ready to bet that Nick Fury will be black into all eternity because his first successful movie incarnation was Samuel L. Jackson.
I think the gender and racebend works with Characters who lesser know for the general public, but with Superman, Captain America, Spider-man aso you'll never able to truly change the perception of them...just like Sherlock Holmes is for most people the guy with the deerstalker, despite the fact that the best adaptations all get it right and don't portray him constantly with him.
Apparently Steve has also gone a bit bonkers and Tony was last seen ranting in a cage that THEY'LL COME CRAWLING BACK YOU'LL SEE YOU'LL ALL SEE
Forever liveblogging the AvengersWhat's weird is that (note, getting this from online discussions and such) it's kind of inconsistent. Tony is basically himself but absent his good qualities and with his bad ones Up To Eleven. For the most part, the villains (especially Hobgoblin and Carnage) are the same people but with good impulses replacing or suppressing their bad ones.
On the other hand, most of the heroes were just turned into dog-kicking loons, especially Sam (and the X Men are now mutant suppremacist Nazis which caused Magneto to thoroughly Heel–Face Turn on account of Your Approval Fills Me with Shame.

Edit, edit, edit, edit the wikiIt seems that it would have been better if this had not been a big event. Instead being a smaller crossover thing.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI think the problem is that while there were some clever ideas in terms of changing Tony, Hobgoblin, and Carnage, an Excuse Plot was necessary to make those changes, and the way they went about changing other characters was not so inspired to say the least.

Edit, edit, edit, edit the wikiThat's what it was before Marvel decided they need 2 "EARTH SHATTERING" events a year. Next year is Secret Wars and Ultron Forever(because they need to tie the movies to the comics somehow).
Edit: Inverted!Loki is pretty good. Helps that he still thinks mostly the same way and has doubts about being completly changed(unlike most villains he actually has a pretty good heart). The biggest change to him is that he doesn't want to put people into danger and can't lie.

They could have done something else.
Although their events seem to be very hit and miss and miss recently.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersThe last really great event was probably Chaos War or The Thanos Imperative.
Edit: The Thanos parts were alright but the space stuff(which was most of it)was almost all crap.

It's Dn A!Guardians of the Galaxy-era cosmic stuff. All cosmic events were good during that era(Annihilation, Conquest, War/Realm of Kings and ending that era of cosmic Marvel, The Thanos Imperiative).

I just got back from an interview with some comic-shop people where I was told Marvel crossovers are their biggest sellers beside The Walking Dead.
Why the hell do people keep buying them?
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.I guess people just really love zombies.
Personally I think they're overdone :p
Forever liveblogging the AvengersMarvel has confirmed Ritter as Jones and released a synopsis
:
Ritter will play Jessica Jones, first introduced in writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos' classic ALIAS comic series. After a tragic ending to her short-lived Super Hero stint, Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.
"Krysten brings both the hard edge and the vulnerability the role demands," said Executive Producer/Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg. "We can't wait for fans to see her in action, coming to Netflix in 2015."
"Krysten Ritter has the type of range, spanning the comic to the tragic, that makes for the stuff of the best Marvel heroes," said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Marvel's Head of Television. "As Jessica Jones, Krysten will bring one of the most beloved new characters of the past decade to life in a way we know will delight her longtime fans and introduce her to many more."
Best known for her roles in "Breaking Bad," "Don't Trust the B—— in Apartment 23," and "Veronica Mars," she will next star alongside Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz, and Jason Schwartzman in Director Tim Burton's "Big Eyes" this Holiday season.
"Marvel's A.K.A. Jessica Jones" is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.
So, will they be using her original backstory here, or...?

Oh God! Natural light!Well, probably not the part about having a crush on Peter Parker in high school.
I do wonder how they will handle her being a (superpowered) superhero and the stuff with the Purple Man, because superhumans don't really seem to have existed in the MCU prior to The Avengers.
Also, I have to admit that while obviously it is important to Jessica's story, I'm not a big fan of Rape as Backstory and how it is almost a requirement for female characters.

Edit, edit, edit, edit the wikiDidn't Agents of SHIELD have several powered people who were being monitored by SHIELD? I don't watch but from the discussion thread I got the impression said monitoring had taken place over several years, which would mean that superhumans have definitely been around since before the battle of New York.
Yes. There was a Playing with Fire guy in the 4th episode they were keeping tabs on.
One thought in terms of presentation- maybe instead of having purple skin, Kilgrave could be mutated to have purple eyes as well as some facial scars.
Also, while it is possible that Jessica would namedrop Carol in the show as being a friend, I would assume that Carol does not yet have superpowers.

Alright. That's a lot better than I thought.
Still messed up they had one of their black heroes specifically start saying "fuck human rights," but at least there's better context than "Power made Sam crazy"
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."
