Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

The worst thing you can say is that it's a bit safe, but I can't cast judgement until I've seen it.
This is not 'Marvel parting ways with Edgar Wright' bad by any means.

Maybe, I don't know. Just don't hold it against the guy playing the character.

Most likely the inspiration for the character.
And while we're at it. The inspiration for Tony Stark
I can't see that happening anytime soon.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. While we're on the subject, Evangeline Lilly recently weighed in on Wright leaving Ant-Man.
Short version: She was going to quit, because she hadn't signed anything, but she read the new script and stayed on because she realized that Edgar's vision would never fit in with the rest of the universe.
If it's good enough for her, it's good enough for me.
I read that! It was a really intelligent response.

My various fanfics. As Sherlock fan, I am totally broken up about the thought that just another project will draw BC away.
But as MCU fan, I buckle the trend and say: YES!!!!!! Really, what is the big issue? They need someone, who can do arrogant well, while still bringing humanity to the role...and that is exactly BC's forte. He has a lot of experience with motion capture, so he can act convincingly on an nearly empty set if necessary. And I hope that they allow him to keep his accent. We need to go a little bit more international with the MCU.
I really don't get all this hate.
Really? Japanese is the go-to counter example? Because I'm pretty sure there are even less Asian-American leads than African-American. The principle stands.
And, as I've said time and time again, I wouldn't have minded if Strange wasn't white. It's ultimately not important. But there's a difference between wanting something and pinning all of your hopes on a very small chance.
No, "why don't you make Black Panther [insert ethnicity here]" is the go-to counterexample. Though admittedly the ethnicity inserted is usually white.
Which is weird because you would think, if absolutely nothing else, the folks making that argument would choose a character who is not literally defined by being an African native with the word "Black" in his title. I mean really.

Honestly, that's a bad argument for a completely different reason—black people and Asian people both need representation, and we shouldn't be taking away from one to please the other because the gap there is so much smaller that, even if blacks do have the leg up, it's only relative.
If one man has a hundred dollars, one man has eight dollars, and one man has a dollar, than stealing a dollar from the second guy to give to the third isn't really helping either of them.

Congratulations Marvel for being too obvious.
I do commend them for at least reaching out to other people for the role. Could have tried harder but they clearly had a set list of "Okay, who would we want for this role?" And I can understand why Cumberbatch would be on that list.
I just wish he was a few actors lower on that list.
