Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I'd say it makes more sense for Brits to learn American accents than the inverse. It's becoming increasingly common to cast English actors in American productions (for a variety of reasons) while the inverse is far less common. You don't see too many Americans being cast as Brits but you see a lot of Brits being cast as Americans.
Mukora: It's more common than you think. Fake Brit and Fake American are tropes for a reason.
That's because there's simply a greater volume of work in America. But as, say, a Canadian actor (hi there), it's a good idea to have both. I just did an RP British accent for a university show last week.

It's more a few people in here want Pedro Pascal in every role in the MCU.

I get a little tired of the whole 'It's the end of the world if things don't go my way' shtick. I like Cumberbatch as an actor. I think River Phoenix would have been a more natural choice which is who they were going for first. The whole Pedro Pascal thing is kinda annoying in many ways at least to me.
I'm sure he's a good actor. I haven't seen anything he's done. Also, how do you know he hasn't been approached? What if he said no to them?
Anyway Cumberbatch will probably do a good job. Its apparently a very hard to cast for part and I can imagine why.
I'm really trying to chill out, it's just I'm so, so sick of Cumberbatch. He's in Star Trek, The Hobbit, Sherlock... plus all his super serious Oscar nomination films. I know I'm being irrationally peevish, but god I just want him to go away.
The MCU makes names, it shouldn't cast names (with RDJ as a weird exception; they were crucial in his comeback but he was obviously well known already).
I just heard about the Dr. Strange casting. Oh, goddammit. GODDAMMIT.
STOP GETTING YOUR CLAWS IN EVERY SINGLE FRANCHISE THAT I LIKE, CABBAGEPATCH. ugh.
Looks like I'm not seeing Dr. Strange, then.

Yeah, because no one knew who Edward Norton, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson or Scarlett Johansson were before the MCU. Or pretty much any of the Guardians who weren't Chris Pratt. And, for that matter, Chris Pratt had Hey Its That Guy recognition from Parks and Rec.
It's a mix.
I never heard of Samuel L. Jackson or Anthony Hopkins till Iron Man 2 and Thor came about.
And

The villains are almost always names, too. Jeff Bridges, Tim Roth, Mickey Rourke, Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, Christopher Eccleston, Josh Brolin, Robert freaking Redford...
Complain about the hero, not the actor.
I'm still not clear why that's an okay thing to say. No one would think it was okay for Black Panther to be played by a Japanese man, so I'm not sure why it's borderline expected for Doctor Strange to get a Race Lift.

I get that people are sick of Cumberbatch's overexposure, but is he really so bad that its worth dismissing the entire movie, which we know nothing about anyways?
Personally, I'm looking forward to it.
This song needs more love.Eh, Lee Pace is a rising star. I'm okay with not calling him a "name" yet.
But yeah, Hulk had Liv Tyler and William Hurt, Iron Man had Paltrow, Terrence Howard, (and later upgraded to Don Cheadle), First Avenger had Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, and Stanley Tucci, and Guardians had Glenn Close. etc.

Exactly. And then on Tumblr you have people talking about how he takes roles that should go to POC, except that has only happened ONCE with Star Trek. It's not like it's a trend, and in Marvel's case it's kind of borderline.

Benedict got rave reviews in The imitation Game recently.
And come on, guys. It's not like he's a bad actor. The way people are responding to this, you'd think they'd gotten someone terrible.
