Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yes, sadly.

Here's the actual source.

My initial reaction was "ugh", but unlike with John Harrison, I think this is a time where Cumberbatch is well-suited for the part.

To a greater extent, I'm very pleased with the Cage and Jones castings.

Who played Black Dynamite? I think he'd be great for the part. Or maybe have Luke Cage meets Black Dynamite.

Michael Jai White.
If not Terry Crews, then he or Isaiah Mustafa would be nice.

Benedict Cumberbatch... LAAAAME.

Isaiah Mustafa is a terrible actor (or at least he was when he was on Chuck), and Michael Jai White always struck me as a little too lean for the role. Besides the fact that he's playing Bronze Tiger on Arrow.

Terry Crews would have been my #1 pick, but the guy they got is good too. I remember him from when I used to watch The Following.

Benedict Cumberbatch is a good choice for Strange. I have no problems with him as a person or actor. I can't stand his fans, though.

Perfectly fine with Cumberbatch Strange.

I thought Dule Hill was going to be Cage?

I still maintain Cumberbatch works better as a villain and should be playing Baron Mordo.

Spawn/Bronze Tiger is Black Dynamite?! Wow, and I thought Shrapnel being Simon Tam was surprising.

Can't say I'm surprised by this casting, but I can't help but be somewhat disappointed.

But then again, it's not gonna bring me down too much, since I'm still excited that Strange is getting his own movie! Yay!

Warning: very strong personal opinion, YMMV

Oh, for fuck's sake. Get the FUCK OUT OF MY MCU, CUMBERBATCH.

I am so damn sick of Cumberbatch. Yeah, he's competent, but I disliked him in Star Trek Into Darkness, was indifferent to him as Smaug, and haven't seen him in anything else except Sherlock and Amazing Grace. He's fine as Sherlock, but I think he's seriously overrated.

As for his own personality, I think he comes off as obnoxiously posh. He's said some rather shady stuff in interviews.

Finally, I wanted someone B-List or C-List for Strange (personal preference: Pedro Pascal). Pascal has an amazing range, I think he'd do well with the depth and the sincerity of Strange, as well as the arrogance. He's not hyperbusy like Cumberbatch, and he'd mesh more with the current MCU.

Cumberbatch is too well known, too overexposed. It'd be like Norton as Hulk in the Avengers... it just feels wrong.

I'm not a big Doctor Strange fan; I'm one of the MCU only fans who barely reads comics. But I love the MCU more than any other intellectual property in the last few years. Deeply, deeply love the MCU. And now I actively don't want to see Doctor Strange because it's fucking Cumberbatch.

/end rant

Ah, there we go. I was wondering when his name would get brought up. Balance has been restored to the Universe.

Additionally: Pedro Pascal's busy with being Pontius Pilot in the Ben-Hur remake anyway. And in TV.

[up][up]AGREED. Except on two points: I wouldn't have minded Norton!Hulk, and I don't actively want to not see the movie, I'm just much less excited about it.

Cumberbatch as Strange?

Gotta admit, this will be a trip. Never imagined him with a goatee, honestly, but I think he could work it.

Now we just need Strange to meet Loki, and then my wildest fantasies will come true.

Does Cumberbatch have an American accent? Can he fake one sufficiently, I mean.

Does he really need to? I don't think being American is integral to Strange's backstory - they could just as easily make him come from the UK in the MCU

While I haven't seen 12 Years a Slave yet, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that his character in that probably wasn't British, so...yes, I'm sure he has one.

On a somewhat more subjective track, as a British actor, he'd be stupid not to have a general American, just as an American actor would be stupid not to have a standard English. ...Or a Canadian actor would be stupid to not have both. *coughs nonchalantly*

I... don't think it's that stupid for an actor to not be prepared to play a nationality they're not.

You're cutting yourself out of a lot of work if you're not able to do them, though. Accents are just a skill, and it really limits you if you don't have at least those two very common ones.

The amount of situations where someone is going to need a fake accent really aren't that common.
