Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I was thinking more along the lines of a Sif and the Warriors Three show. Guest Starring Loki, the Tagalong Kid that Thor can't be arsed to take care of and nobody likes. tongue

Seriously though, it might be nice to see the Warriors Three's various adventures and finally see more full character development for them.

Call it Journey Into Mysterynote  and have it focus on the non-Thor asgardians.

I like this idea that Hawkeye and Loki have just been in a prank war for the past few years.

It's Clint. Any time he is off duty the world has to take a shit on him somehow. Be it mobsters, a flood, Tony spoiling his favourite tv series or just a broken toe, the world will make sure Barton isn't ever 100% happy.

Edit: Oh god how did it take me this long to find these short fan comics.

He's a lot like Peter Parker in that regard. Which is probably why they get on so well on the New Avengers.

He has Pizza Dog though and Kate-Hawkeye and his brother isn't evil anymore though.

He's also deaf again but that was done very well and realistically and there was this whole sign-language issue so that's fine.

I kind of want him to have a solo film which is similar in tone to his current series (although a bit higher stakes) and also cinematic Kate-Hawkeye but I guess in the very unlikely event that he ever got a film it would only be fair that Black Widow was co-star.

Also, I will take anything that gives us more Sif. I stick firmly to the statement that she's awesome.

I'm down for a Hawkeye TV show based on Matt Fraction's run.

An MCU story with Hank as Ant-Man? I might get that. Especially if it'll help ease the disappointment of Lang being Ant-Man in the movie.

Winter Soldier reported to be "central" in Captain America: Civil War.

''In an article posted today at Badass Digest, it is mentioned in passing that Sebastian Stan's Winter Soldier character will be a "central character" in Captain America: Civil War. "Sources close to production tell me that not only is the Winter Soldier involved in Civil War, he's a central character in it," it states. The article is mostly focused on the potential role of Daniel Bruhl's villain in the film, but speculates that Bruhl's character could be tied to the origin of the Winter Soldier.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo had previously suggested that the Winter Soldier would play a key role in the third Captain America film, noting that they viewed Captain America 2 and 3 as a two parter. In April, the Russos told Slash Film: "The next movie would seem to require a continuation of the journey of the Winter Soldier ... Both on Cap's part and the Winter Soldier part." However, those comments were made months ago, earlier in the film's development stage and before details of Captain America: Civil War emerged.

As more of the cast have been confirmed for the film in recent weeks, including Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man and Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther, there was some question among fans whether plans had changed, especially since there has been no official word on Sebastian Stan's Winter Soldier yet and reports on RDJ's contract suggested he pushed for a bigger role than was originally intended. However, this new report suggests the Winter Soldier will still be heavily involved in the third Cap film. What role do you think the Winter Soldier will play in Civil War?''

Interesting...really hope this is the case. Really liking these developments.

regarding a comment from a couple of pages back about Loki being a compelling character, but Peggy still needing to apparently prove herself:

I find Peggy to be more compelling than Loki, tbh. I'm absolutely tired of Loki. I like Tom Hiddleston and all, but....man, I'm just sick of the Loki overexposure in the MCU.

Why not a Loki movie?

I'm gonna guess for the same reason Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Hulk aren't getting movies either. Barring sequels, Marvel is making a conscious effort to try new things and grow their universe, while Loki's already been in three movies and is about to appear in three more. He's the absolute last character in the MCU who needs their own movie.

I don't hate Loki or anything, but there's seriously no reason to give him his own solo film when he's already played major roles in a string of other movies.

It's really difficult to have a movie centered around a character who can't talk ("Hulk smash" doesn't count).

I still feel like Hawkeye would be served well by giving him a collapsible sword a la Sulu in Star Trek 2009 and incorporating part of the Ronin persona, so that he wasn't as glaringly disadvantaged in close range.

The news about the Winter Soldier having a big part in Cap 3 makes a lot of sense. If the Winter Solider was indeed involved in Howard Stark's death, and Cap's trying to protect Bucky from some kind of government/international action/punishment/retribution, it creates a very strong personal dimension to any ethical disagreement that Cap and Stark have.

It's strange...somehow the best villains (other than Loki) in the universe end up being in Ao S...most likely because they have more time to built them up.
