Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

You aren't being very comprehensible right now.

It's a lot harder to try to talk online when you're crunched for time and on a phone. Really shouldn't.

The first Zemo was. The second one wore a similar mask for a while before he formed the Thunderbolts in an over-complicated plot to destroy the Avengers once and for all.

Marvel has a storied history of douchebags who accidentally fucked up their own faces.

And anti-heroes. Though he didn't fuck up his own face.

There should be a supervillain whose entire aim is to just go around fucking up people's faces for no reason. No wait, a superhero.

[up] That sounds like something Deadpool would try if he had nothing better to do.

If Baron Zemo, and with him, the Masters of Evil, ever showed up in the MCU, Infinity War would make a nice set up for a Thunderbolts movie.

I can see it now: Thanos is defeated, but with a terrible price: the Avengers, save for a few members, have disappeared and are presumed dead. A mysterious brand new superhero team, headed by some guy called Citizen V, rises out of the ashes of the Infinity War...

Honestly, they might be more looking at DC's Suicide Squad.

I honestly think Marvel is going to do its own thing regardless. None of the movies really strike me as a reaction to something else.

Guardians of the Galaxy was supposedly a reaction to Green Lantern, although I don't know if I can believe it considering the gap between them.

While they probably had ideas for them for a while I can't help but feel that Marvel decided to bump up the announcement of the Black Panther and Captain Marvel movies after seeing DC's slate included Cyborg and Wonder Woman.

I thought Guardians of the Galaxy was Marvel saying "You know, we should really get someone to exposit those infinity stone thingies sooner or later."

Yeah, I'm fairly certain Marvel's reaction to Green Lantern was to laugh hysterically, high five each other, then go back about their business.

If anything Green Lantern was more of a reaction to Iron man. I may have spoken too quickly but the storyline of Cap 3 may be a reaction to Batman vs Superman.

[up]I wouldn't be surprised. A lot of the stuff the writers and Russo brothers were talking about prior to the Civil War announcement did not sound like they were heading towards Civil War.

As for the Suicide Squad connection I think the similarities are bound to occur, but it depends on which version of the Thunderbolts they choose to adapt. As long as they don't use the Jeff Parker run (which was for all intents and purposes as Suicide Squad clone) they should be good.

I doubt it. Marvel seems really particular about the timing of their movies. There's no way they haven't been carefully planning out this order. It was what, two, three weeks between DC announcing their whole slate and Marvel doing the same? They wouldn't have changed their plans that quickly just because DC did something.

I have a feeling the thing holding up Marvel's announcement was that they wanted to have a new actor to present. The original plan was for them to have Joaquin Phoenix at SDCC and officially announce Doctor Strange. It would not be a shock if they had planned on announcing all the way to Infinity War then, especially since they'd put out all the dates only a couple weeks before. Since Phoenix didn't sign, the announcement went on hold until they signed somebody for anything. And since Strange is taking forever to find, that happened to be Chadwick Boseman.

Granted, that's just a guess. But it's a less reactionary one.

[up]Wasn't it just a few days? If I remember correctly DC made a few announcement during Comic Con, but the actual slate which included wonder woman aso was announced later during a stockholder meeting. And then Marvel came around with their announcement...which was too well planed to be a spur of the moment thing. You don't sign a lead actor for a movie that fast, so Black Panther had to be in the works beforehand.

Dogwelder: A thin, silent man in a welder's mask who spot welds dead canines to evildoers.

Huh.

Well.

Funnily enough, I have heard of one of the other guys on his team - the Defenestrator. Just on first glance at the story, DC has to make a movie out of Section 8 one of these days.
