Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Perhaps the Maximoff twins will be Inhumans in AOU after all.

Apparently, some people aren't gonna go see the film because Joss Whedon is rather anti-Gamer Gate. Your thoughts?

Can we not?

That's a banned topic, first off. And it's not really relevant.

[up][up]There is literally no reason to bring that up here.

Plus I doubt the boycott would do much to hurt the movie.

Sounds like the time someone on one of these threads a few years ago claimed The Avengers would be ruined by Whedon because he'd make Black Widow the main character and turn everyone into snarkers. If the naysayers are going to leave, then I won't be missing them.

Are you gonna say that there is a single character in a Whedon-directed Marvel film that hasn't snarked?

I'll just say tough titties, we don't need fans like that. And leave it at that.

Yeah, sorry for bringing that up.

On another note, how do you think Age Of Ultron will stand up to the other Phase 2 films? I have high hopes for it. Though, I worry that it will have a ton of flaws in it, like the Phase's supposed masterpiece:

[up]Except a good number of those flaws have explanations, so using that as evidence is pointless.

I really don't get why so many people care about these Everything Wrong With videos.

Apparently, if one tries to refute the sins, then you're just an overly defensive Marvel fanboy.

I especially like it when the video says "it's fine if you like the movie, but just be aware that you are enjoying a Terry Gilliam fever dream."

Christ, could you not bring that video up at every opportunity, please? We get it.

Here's a shocker for you: There is no such thing as a piece of media without at least one plot hole.

[up][up]So then why even bring Everything Wrong With into the discussion? Most of what they're saying are either jokes, minor issues, or just plain wrong, so why would you even make the claim that it's a "supposed masterpiece" with "a ton of flaws" and then post that?

Sorry, bad habit.

I just have this whole thing that if what I like is so heavily flawed, then my tastes are bad or something like that (the guy said that he disliked the film because it "lacked common sense").

Well, they're not. A good amount of the sins are jokes Cinemasins will regularly make, and Winter Soldier is still overall a solid movie. Personally, I had a good laugh when I watched that one.

[up][up] How is this a Stable Time Loop? Does anyone deliberately get involved in the past to ensure the future?

I was thinking more along the lines of a "Groundhog Day" Loop.
