Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Man. Ultron's voice actor is so good.

Why don't we wait until it's confirmed before passing it off as fact.

The last hurrah? Nah, I'd do it again.

@Lackofsense, If ANY of those resources were available to me I wouldn't be having a data plan dilemma in the first place. I either use that or the restricted internet of this campus that blocks most streaming sites among other things. We can't just casually leave to go to a Mickey D's, especially this far out in the boonies where the nearest one is a 30 minute drive away and we're not allowed to just walk off.

[up][up]Nope. They showed the Mind Stone up there with the rest of the Infinity Stones in the Infinity War trailer so I will continue calling the Mind Stone the Mind Stone. And no I'm not having this argument again because it's been done to death.

[up][up][up]He really is. There's some naturally creepy about Spader that works so well.

Fair enough, I don't completely know your situation. Are you that far from everything?

[up][up]Good idea. Acting like you're right is almost the same as actually being right!

Bringing it up when you know others will object is having the argument.

I know it doesn't make much sense, but that last scene when Ultron says he's got no strings reminds me of Saren. Could just be the general artistic direction techy stuff like Saren's parts, close fitting power armor, and humanoid robots are taking the past several years.

[up][up]I'm not acting like I'm right LOL I referred to it as the Mind Stone based off it being included in the Infinity trailer. We're all big boys and girls here. People can handle me referring to the Mind Stone as the Mind Stone in an one-off list of observations.

[up]Again, I brought it up as a list of observations which immediately caused someone to single it out and make a sarcastic quip. That ain't on me.

As I said, I'm done arguing about the Mind Stone.

The mind gem may be in the staff. It may not. I'm sure we'll get more information when Age of Ultron comes out. I'm curious as to what they plan to do with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. I doubt Quicksilver will be as entertaining as his Days of Future Past counterpart, but I'm intrigued by how they might do Wanda. I hope she isn't played exactly like River Tam.

How do you folks think she'll be played?

[up]Exactly like River Tam. Joss Whedon seems to love certain tropes....

So, what you are saying is that my fears are justified? Comic Wanda is pretty far from River in characterization. Even after she lost her mind, River Tam isn't who comes to mind in comparison.

Wanda has unfortunately been Flanderized since Avengers Disassembled (where she went crazy and killed Hawkeye) so it seems that's what they're drawing from.

I don't know if it'll be exactly like River Tam but she definitely looks crazy.

I think it's too early to tell what she's gonna be like.

Well, in the comics, Wanda's a very loving, very kindhearted individual who nevertheless has a working knowledge of chaos magic, which she's capable of performing pretty scary things with.

The action-focused nature of the trailers prevent us from seeing any of her personality. Likewise, I'm still wondering if Pietro's gonna be as much of an arrogant prick in this movie as he is in the comics.

The stinger in Cap2 was meant to introduce the two characters. While Quicksilver was doing his speedy thing, Scarlet Witch was looking all loopy using her magic. That should give some indication of what sort of direction they are going to take.

Does anyone know was the close-up of Hawkeye at the beginning new?

So... Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails. And Strucker is Eggman. Ultron is Metal Sonic.

It all makes sense now.

The kooky quartet had an odd dynamic. Cap was trying to lead two assholes who thought they could do the job better and a woman out to prove herself. Add to that the dynamic between the Maximoff siblings and that arc was pretty entertaining. I hope they can replicate that.

[up]Okay, obviously Hawkeye, Pietro, and then Natasha. what was Wanda's role in all that? I looked up the Kooky Quartet to refresh my memory. No Black Widow. My mistake.

And yes, in response to your earlier question, I was not exaggerating when I said that I was about a 30 minute drive from any place with unrestricted wifi and we're not allwoed to just walk off campus.

The Quartet was Cap Hawkeye Wanda and Pietro. That was The Avengers for about a year.

I think Natasha was still an untrustworthy Russian spy at that point in the comics.

So something interesting I saw last night is that now that Attilan is apparently being introduced in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., perhaps the rise of Inhumans will have something to do with the Civil War and the government's need to regulate and control people with powers.

I'm kinda surprised the Inhumans are being set up this early considering their movie doesn't come out until 2018.
