Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

guys, I have avoided the Big Hero 6 thread for weeks because I don't want to know too much about the movie until I have actually seen it (and it won't start over here before January). Could you please discuss it over there? That would be really nice.

I support that motion. It is not actually related to the MCU, anyway.

re: Matt Bomer playing Black Bolt

Not gonna happen. Because we pretty much already know who's playing Black Bolt, because Vin Diesel can't keep a secret to save his life. tongue

This is a very old discussion: But it's likely that characters look like they're all over the place in the Age of Ultron party scene because that's not the whole scene, just one edited for time.

[up][up]...who'd he say was Black Bolt?

Nothing against Vin Diesel, but he wouldn't be my first choice to play a mostly mute character (no, Groot is not mute, he does talk, and a lot of his performance was based on the way he emphasised his line). Plus, he never said that he was getting the role. He only hinted that he might be involved in the Inhumans...which could have been a tactic to distract from the true plans for him.

For my part I would find it very creepy if a human character had Groots face. For all the motion capture, you can still recognize a lot of the actual actor beneath.

Himself. Vin Diesel said he wants to play Black Bolt. Who knows if that's an actual hint or just wishful thinking on his part.

[up][up] Except Groot isn't performance captured, and doesn't really resemble Vin Diesel very much. Maybe in the mouth a bit, but that's about it.

And if they wanted Vin Diesel to be in the In Humans, there's literally no one he could play but Black Bolt.

He could be the voiced of Lockjaw.

The prevailing line of logic is as follows:

Marvel approaches Vin Diesel at SDCC 2013 and tells him they have a role for him in a future MCU film. Having wanted to work with them for a long time, he immediately says yes. However, it's a few years away, and he wants to work with them before that, so he asks if there's anything he can do in the meantime. They offer him the chance to voice Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. Vin Diesel later teases that he's part of the Inhumans movie.

Given that Marvel has a rule against actors appearing as more than one character in the film series (it got brought up any time someone interviewed Paul Bettany at Comic-Con), Diesel could only do both if he was offered the role of Black Bolt, where his voice is a non-issue and can be used for Groot.

DON'T EVEN JOKE THAT LOCKJAW WOULD BE IN THE INHUMANS MOVIE. THAT'S TOO COOL.

Well, like I said in my initial post, it is a little bit early to discuss the casting either way. Marvel will first settle on a director, who will then cast according to his vision.

Though I still think that it is quite noticeable how much they poached from USA Network recently...which makes sense, since USA is changing their programming (sadly) and a lot of their shows are currently ending, never mind that the actors there are not full-time engaged either way since the shows there have shorter seasons from the get go, there is quite a lot talent available. I certainly did a double take when Sharif Atkins was suddenly on screen during Guardians of the Galaxy, even if it was a "blink and you'll miss it" role. But it is nice to see all those actors popping up again. Matt Bomer, though, he would be wasted on TV (and no, that has nothing to do with his good looks, he is simply a really good actor), especially since he has played more and more movie roles in the last years. And I would be very surprised if he isn't approached (again) to play a role in a Superhero movie, now that DC and Marvel will both look for talents.

Not necessarily, no. They cast Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther a full three years ahead of his movie, with as far as we know no director attached.

[up]I suspect that is more because they will introduce the character in an earlier movie before the actual Black Panther movie. At least I have the feeling that they will.

Or, you know, actual confirmation that he's going to be in Civil War. Which we have.

[up][up]And we know they won't do the same for Black Bolt?

#22343: Nov 8th 2014 at 11:37:40 AM

[up]Well, they did say that they want a director first before casting Captain Marvel, and the movie comes first. So I assumed that it would be the same for Inhumans. But you never know for sure, naturally.

I still find it odd that T'Challa has been cast, despite his debut happening after Doctor Strange...which still hasn't had its lead announced yet.

That's probably due to Joaquin Phoenix being quite close to signing, but he withdrew at the last moment. Oh, and if T'Challa's debut is in CW, then that's before the good doctor.

[up]Perhaps he will turn up in Captain America? Or in some stinger?

But yeah, I am wondering about Dr. Strange too. it is...strange...that it is apparently that difficult to find an actor. Time is running out if they want to stick to the schedule.

Not really. Movies generally shoot about a year in advance, which means they have until next summer to find someone.

Did Cumberbatch not sign or something? I thought they were using him.

There was a completely unsourced claim that they were in talks that got blown out of proportion, but that's it.
