Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up] Well, there's a decent chance he's going to be fighting against America in that movie...

So, craving some superhero-style stuff and trying to ween myself off the awful-but-addicting Gotham, I decided to give Agents of SHIELD another shot, because I've been told it gets better after all the stuff that I was spoiled on in the wake of Winter Soldier happens.

I got to say, it damn well better, because I've only just gotten to the episode where HYDRA goes public and the episodes I hadn't watched from before the reveal are all as mediocre as I expected.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

[up]The Hydra reveal IS the point at which the show gets better/good. The last episodes of season one and the start of season two is when the show is getting good. Since I have really trouble with the C Wness of Arrow and Flash, don't like Zombies and found Gotham awful on every level, Ao S is now my favourite Comic Show currently on TV...not that this is hard to do....

It's nice that they will show Agent Carter during the hiatus.

Why don't they just call A3 Avengers 3 and Avengers 4 instead of part 1 and 2. It's not a novel adaptation. It makes more sense!

[up]To make clear that Infinity War 1 and 2 belong closer together than The Avengers and The Avengers Age of Ultron. It's a clear message to the audience that to understand part 2 you have to watch part 1.

Also, Age of Ultron is not "Avengers 2" so why start with Infinity War?

Like that's ever stopped putting the number in the works's name before. Also people are going to call it Avengers 2 anyway, just like we're calling them Cap 2 and Thor 2, even though they don't have numbers in the official titles.

[up] Well, I guess you could also call them Avengers 3a and 3b - because it won't be Avengers 3 and 4 but one movie split in two.

I wish people would stop saying that.

No, it's not one movie split into two. It's one story told across two movies. Infinity War Parts 1 and 2 are Avengers 3 and 4 respectively.

Marvel fell in love with decimals after Quesada left the EIC position and Alonso accepted it. The new Alonso regime has tons of these.

For instance, a tie-in to the recent Original Sin event was labelled Original Sin 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, etc. Age of Ultron's tie-ins from established titles had names like Superior Spider-Man 13.5, Captain Marvel 4.5, etc. Even when they aren't doing events, they'll occasionally do issues like Fantastic Four 32.1 or X-Men 14.1, etc.

The Infinity War movies are just continuing this trend.

[up][up]The point is that Avengers is designed to work as a stand alone movie to a certain degree, as is Age of Ultron. You are better off knowing the characters beforehand, but you don't really need to, because every hero gets a character establishing moment. This won't be the case with Infinity War 2 - the film makers will create this one under the assumption that the audience watched Infinity War 1 beforehand. And therefore it makes sense to number them 1 and 2, to send a clear message to the audience that both movies belong to the same story arc and are tightly knit.

And as for Marvel using numbers at all, you should've noticed by now that the MCU films not only have stopped doing that in favor of subtitles, only the Iron Man films had numbers.

And I guess GOTG, but it's possible it'll get a subtitle one they're ready to reveal plot elements.

[up] I have the feeling they will stick to numbering for Got G, if for no other reason that a four word title is already long enough without adding a subtitle.

Avengers 3: Infinity War part 1 and Avengers 3: Infinity War part 2.

So, I read up on the Inhumans today....

1. I have to say, I am now looking forward to the movie instead of being "whatever" about it. A Superhero team with family bonds would be great since the alternative (the Fantastic Four) are not available.

2. I especially like the concept of a married couple as leaders. The relationship between Medusa and Black Bolt sounds compelling (and while it is way too early for that, I hope they consider Matt Bomer for the latter role...they need an actor who mainly acts with his eyes for this one, and there aren't many who do that).

3. Medusa sounds like quite a badass lady.

4. I hope that they "forget" the royalty aspect though (btw, I hope they also skip if for Black Panther). Honestly, was is wrong with elected leaders?

5. I also hope that cut out the sibling rivalry...between Thor and Loki as well as Gamora and Nebula we already have more than enough of that in the universe.

Just some random thoughts....

I wonder if cries of the Inhumans ripping off the X-Men will be made. X-Men on the Moon!

Given that Marvel has been making them into X-Men rip-offs in the comic it's not without merit.

Alleged first look at Yellowjacket.

The helmet reminds me of a Cerberus grunt.

[up][up][up][up][up]What's wrong with unelected leaders?

Hank Pym has had enough identities to fill an entire movie.

[up][up]Man, that looks great. There have been some real hits lately. Some stinkers, too, like Bit o' Honey Iron Man and gaudy-camp Avengers Cap.

[up]It's boring and I don't buy into the concept that royals are automatically good leader.

Of course being royalty doesn't mean you can lead. That's what the first Thor film was in part about. That, and shitty, shitty "romance".

Elected officials aren't automatically good leaders, either. And how is having a couple of royals in vastly different settings "boring"?

The suit reminds me a bit of the second suit Lang used in the comics(the one that doesn't look like Pym's suit), mostly in the helmet. No idea where the arms come from(reminds me of the Iron Spider suit). Doesn't look that much like the Yellowjacket suit in the comics. What's the villain's goal again?

Edit: The Inhumans are a royal family and mostly acts like one. That's their thing and I hope they keep it in the movies.
