Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Insects are not a kingdom.
But, yeah, that is a good point. Between "Invisible Girl" and "Marvel Girl", we should probably be happy Wasp didn't end up as "Ant Girl" or something.

She might be. To be honest, I don't read much of the Avengers. That is just my impression based in what I did read. But she barely appeared in the books I've read, so maybe in stories more focused on her she is more interesting.

And in any case, we all know that 'spiders are the most vicious killers in the insect kingdom'.

Just quoting your own words.
That show is probably the main reason I like Wasp so much.
x2 Spiders aren't insects! God. You're so dumb.
Its amazing how amazing turning small and talking to bugs is made to look on the show.
Drowning people in a cloud of stinging, biting insects is always an effective move.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI am honestly hoping the Ant-Man suit still lets you communicate with ants in the movie. I know the Falcon talking to birds would've been a little too wacky for a political thriller but I still miss having proper animal-themed heroes.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.
Scarlet Witch could alter reality and turn Sam into the best spy ever, with a network of birds.
Found an English compilation of Sam flying.

I just re-watched it, and it's amazing how tightly-plotted and fast-moving the whole thing is. Even in most of the superhero movies I like, it can feel like there's a lot of exposition and buildup before the plot really gets moving. In this one, there's no slack time. We've got one short conversation that gives a clear sense of who Cap is and how he's feeling, and introduces a new character, then we go straight to Cap going on a mission - not just as a chance to show the audience his skills, but as something that's part of the main plot. Every event connects to, and is relevant to, subsequent ones. Even when they need to include backstory - like with Cap visiting the museum - it's part of a character moment, where Cap's feeling adrift and unsure and is walking through the museum remembering what he fought for in the old days as a way of figuring out what he should be doing now. The museum voiceover gives the necessary information to people who didn't watch The First Avenger, but it's not the focus of the scene.
Every other superhero movie has scenes where you can say "Did they need to include that?" or "They could have shortened that one without losing anything. In The Winter Soldier, every scene feels like it matters.
It's also pretty good in terms of managing multiple character arcs (Cap, Widow, and Fury).

I like "Wasp" as a codename. They could have easily gone with the more feminine-coded "Bee" or "Bumblebee," but instead they used one of the most vicious, murderous creatures in the insect kingdom.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."
