Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I like "Wasp" as a codename. They could have easily gone with the more feminine-coded "Bee" or "Bumblebee," but instead they used one of the most vicious, murderous creatures in the insect kingdom.

[up][up]Insects are not a kingdom.tongue

But, yeah, that is a good point. Between "Invisible Girl" and "Marvel Girl", we should probably be happy Wasp didn't end up as "Ant Girl" or something.

[up][up][up]She might be. To be honest, I don't read much of the Avengers. That is just my impression based in what I did read. But she barely appeared in the books I've read, so maybe in stories more focused on her she is more interesting.

[up][up][up]And in any case, we all know that 'spiders are the most vicious killers in the insect kingdom'.

That show is probably the main reason I like Wasp so much.

[up]x2 Spiders aren't insects! God. You're so dumb.

[up][up]Yeah, that sounds cooler than any Wasp I've seem.

Although, damn, this show have terrible pacing. The action and dialogue feels so damn unnatural.

Two minutes into that video. Not impressed by her. She shrinks and zaps people with little bolts of energy. Yay. And are her wings physically a part of her body?

Oh come on. You can make any character seem lame if you do that.

Captain America wears and American flag and throws his shield

Iron Man flies and shoots blast of energy

Thor hits people with a hammer

Hulk smash

Its amazing how amazing turning small and talking to bugs is made to look on the show.

Drowning people in a cloud of stinging, biting insects is always an effective move.

[up][up][up]That explains the "being out of breath" thing. Figured the wings were part of a suit or something.

Also, that was a short made before the show proper, which might explain the pacing issues.

I am honestly hoping the Ant-Man suit still lets you communicate with ants in the movie. I know the Falcon talking to birds would've been a little too wacky for a political thriller but I still miss having proper animal-themed heroes.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

[up]Scarlet Witch could alter reality and turn Sam into the best spy ever, with a network of birds.

Found an English compilation of Sam flying.

Saw the opening run on the Tidal Basin and National Mall again... man, I wish I could bromance with either of these guys.

That settles it. Cap 2 is my favorite MCU film by far. The action and the feels it gives me...

Does Scarlet Witch even have Reality Warper powers in the movie.

[up][up]

I just re-watched it, and it's amazing how tightly-plotted and fast-moving the whole thing is. Even in most of the superhero movies I like, it can feel like there's a lot of exposition and buildup before the plot really gets moving. In this one, there's no slack time. We've got one short conversation that gives a clear sense of who Cap is and how he's feeling, and introduces a new character, then we go straight to Cap going on a mission - not just as a chance to show the audience his skills, but as something that's part of the main plot. Every event connects to, and is relevant to, subsequent ones. Even when they need to include backstory - like with Cap visiting the museum - it's part of a character moment, where Cap's feeling adrift and unsure and is walking through the museum remembering what he fought for in the old days as a way of figuring out what he should be doing now. The museum voiceover gives the necessary information to people who didn't watch The First Avenger, but it's not the focus of the scene.

Every other superhero movie has scenes where you can say "Did they need to include that?" or "They could have shortened that one without losing anything. In The Winter Soldier, every scene feels like it matters.

It's also pretty good in terms of managing multiple character arcs (Cap, Widow, and Fury).

Hell, even Sam, Bucky and Sitwell got a bit of subtle development. For one, notice that Sitwell's voice changes completely when he drops the act for good.

"If you're going to make an enemy, better not make one with AMERICA" had better be the pro-Cap slogan of Civil War.
