Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Just seeing all these announcements, all I can think is 'whoa' it's like Marvel has asked, How can we be more ambitious in 2023 and 2024.
Sincerely S Awatching.... O Kay I admit the new trailers got me a bit excited^^ as I (and most people) thought, the Multiverse is gonna be the focus. And it's pretty nice that they finally gave a clear date for Fantastic Four. It finally feels like they got a direction again for real^^
There is also Thunderbolts wich seems to take the place of an Avengers movie for Phase 5.
With these announcements it is clear that the purpose of Phase 4 is to put a bunch of new pieces on the table, with Phase 5 and 6 fitting them together.
Remains to be seen if that will make Phase 4 feel less aimless in retrospect.

Harping on? This is literally the first time I did so (ironically, I might add).
You must've missed all the other people who discussed this in the respective thread, too.

Certified: 48.0% West Asian, 6.5% South Asian, 15.8% North/West European, 15.7% English, 7.4% Balkan, 6.6% ScandinavianPhase 6 being only six months long seems suspect. Splitting phase 5 and 6 instead of having them be one thing is a bit, Huh.
I like my avenger films to be about the avengers rather than the entire Marvel setting so I'm not wild about Secret Wars, but there's a lot here I'm happy about.
The She-Hulk trailer has made me do a 180 on my initial issues now that we have a better idea of tone. (Huh! Wrecking crew!)
Also I have hopes for Thunderbolts, but with there being so many iterations of that team it's hard to know what we're getting at this point.
yeah the Wrecking Crew showing up got me bizarrely excited - which is funny because they aren't even among my favourite villains. But they're iconic enough that I kinda look forward seeing them.
Thunderbolts I am... cautiously optimistic? On the one hand I'd love to see an adaptation of one of my favourite teams in the comic. On the other hand... I'm mostly an OG Thunderbolts fans. You know, the ones who were villains disguised as heroes but find out Good Feels Good and do a Heel–Face Turn. And like most people on this thread, I'm reallly worried they'll make it a Suicide Squad rip-off, which I'm not looking forward too.
They’ll prolly be composited with the Dark Avengers which is more of a government backed team of supervillains masquerading as popular heroes.
Though granted only Walker, Yelena, and Abom can feasibly do that. I’m not sure who Ghost can pretend to be.
I’m also a bit sad that Secret Wars will probably have Kang in Doctor Doom’s place as it’s way too late by that point to properly build up his and Reed’s rivalry.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Apologies, I may be wrong but it seems like whenever Hawkeye or villian protagonists come up you make a variant of that crack.
Eta: curious who makes the Avengers line up and hope they start using the assemble vstchphrase on the regular.

They're fairly strong, they consistently tangle with Hulk and Thor, but yeah, they're pretty consistently joke villains.
Mostly just in terms of their personalities and motivations being irreverent and goofy. The closest MCU parallel I can think of is the Tracksuit Mafia Bros in Hawkeye.

The wrecking crew are ironic because there easy to use. They're not out to take over the world or anything of that level just smash and grab cash, which makes them easy to put them in a story, they can act on their own or as muscle for another bad guy.
EDIT: Looks like they have some mystic or Asgardian weapons which is a different take on their origin, didn't help them much but still cool visual.
Edited by SAwatching on Jul 24th 2022 at 3:00:19 PM
Sincerely S Awatching.Which makes it ironic since they are empowered by an Asgardian level artifact enabling them to sorta tangle with Thor.
They are another case of "Potentially immense power, limited by being wielded by smalltime crooks".
The U-Foes are another example where near every member is broken power-wise but they are all idiots or thugs to make much use of their powers.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
That is definitely what the wrecking crew is and that's why there fun villains.
The title of the new Captain America(New World Order) movie seemed familiar to me so I did some digging.
Beside it being the name of a professional wresting group led by Hulk Hogan, it was also the name first episode of Fat WS. And the name of a supervillain organization founded by the Red Skull in the comics
It's also the name of conspiracy theory about a secret totalitarian government taking over the world...
Personally I feel like they should ring up Sam Raimi and see if he's available but I am biased.
Whoa Nelly.
Having Sam Raimi directing either Avengers movies (or both?) sounds like it would be, if you'll excuse my French, the wet dream to end all wet dreams for superhero movie nerds.
Whilst the trailer for Ant-man 3 was only shown at comic-con, someone was able to record the audio and one line just hypes me for Kang.
Kang to Scott:“You’re an Avenger. Have I killed you before?”
This implies that this Kang has in a different Universe killed Avengers and possible another Scott, scarier still there are dozens (at least) of Kang's who have killed Avengers throw out the Multiverse.
How do you fight someone who has killed you before, possibly a hundred times?
Sincerely S Awatching. But, logically, doesn't Kang face the same problem? For every Avenger he kills, there's another timeline in which they're alive. For every timeline he conquers, there's another he hasn't... or an infinite number, really. The only difference is that he "remembers" all of them.
Also, the ability to cross from one timeline to another kind of breaks the whole concept of time travel that Endgame establishes, doesn't it? Or is it that you can never go back into your own past, but you can freely travel between timelines that have already diverged?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

I think they sensed a disturbance in the Force regarding Phase 4 reception and perceptions of its direction (or lack thereof) and wanted to nip that in the bud with the big bombs: "yes all this is totes leading to something important, plz go see Love and Thunder".
D23 is in September, so I expect some of those less major announcements will show up then.
