Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers Hellcat. Most people who bring up canonicity issues with the Netflix MCU bring up all the baggage with the Hand and Iron Fist, few bring up the fact that at the end of JJ Hellcat is condemned to spend the rest of her life in supermax. At least one time I've brought up "How does the MCU salvage Hellcat?" the answer I got was "Don't, who even cares about her, just let her rot in prison, forget her, and move on." And no I don't like thaaaaat. >3<
Are there any characters you think they'll reveal to be Skrulls?
I think they might use it to explain away Fisk's "death" at Hawkeye. And yes, I know it's a scene lifted from the comics where Fisk survived, but it's still an easy way out for them.

If Secret Invasion is about discovering that there are good Skrulls and evil Skrulls in the world, I can see that being why the theme of the show will be paranoia. Since the world had previously gone through the HYDRA conspiracy being revealed to them in 2014 might make humanity severely distrusting of the Skrulls as a whole, even the good guys who have been helping us for literal decades. The fact that at least one Skrull has been shown to be an FBI agent could definitely be a tipping point in-universe for all sorts of fearmongering.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."
X2
Because of what scene was referencing, i don't think that person will be a Skrull. Plus the Secret Invasion show seems to be self contained. That was just setting up the Echo show.
I remember Cox saying that he expects things won't be exactly the same because of how much time has passed.

I don't expect to get much of any "X character was actually a Skrull all along" reveals unless them being a Skrull doesn't really change anything fundamental about their character.
Like, I could see Happy being revealed to be a Skrull refugee just trying to get by, but not a nefarious Skrull invader using his position close to Stark in order to carry out an agenda. I doubt Kevin Feige would have given the show carte blanche to just invalidate whole-ass characters like that.
"Secret Invasion", the comic, ultimately failed to live up to its premise because few characters could actually be revealed as Skrulls without totally ruining the comics that those characters were from. If Spider-Man, for instance, was a Skrull then fuck me, I guess months/years of comics were just a complete waste of time, weren't they?
So we wound up just getting a few relatively minor reveals. Like Tony Stark's butler being a Skrull.
I fully expect this effect to be in full swing even harder for the MCU. No important character would ever turn out to be a Skrull. If Happy's a Skrull, then so much for that pep talk he gave Peter Parker in Far From Home. If Shang-Chi is a Skrull, then that movie was a complete waste of time, wasn't it? If Bucky's a Skrull then wow, that totally ruins like half of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Etc. etc.
They can't actually go full-blown Paranoia Fuel because this story doesn't exist in a vacuum. Trying to actually live up to the premise of the concept would result in wreaking havoc across the MCU's filmology and pissing off a lot of fans.
Instead, I fully expect this to go the In Name Only route like Age of Ultron, and just be a cool story featuring Talos as the main character.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I hope "Secret Invasion" is paranoia being pushed rather than an actual thing the Skrulls are actually doing. A similar inciting incident like the Elektra Skrull being revealed but with the Skrulls really just trying to live their lives on Earth.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI would think that if there are evil Skrulls impersonating people in the MCU, they're more-or-less going to limit themselves to government officials, citizens and maybe one Badass Normal superhero. Hence why we mostly have non-empowered characters confirmed for the show so far, outside of one Avenger who's basically just Iron Man but with a machine gun. And given that the MCU's take on Secret Invasion is going to be a TV show rather than a movie, I feel like the show is trying to steer away from being an epic high-stakes event. Which definitely seems like a step in the right direction, given how many people complained that the comic kinda failed to apply the "secret" part of Secret Invasion to the story, in lieu of trying to write crazy action scenes.
If I were the one in charge of this thing, I would put as few explicitly superpowered characters in this thing as possible, so the whole fear of "is that person a Skrull, and if they are, are they on my side" seems more viable and interesting from a societal and government perspective. The only problem I see is some people might think it's just a rehash of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but with aliens instead of HYDRA.

I certainly expect that it's going to be cast as 'look at the silly government, being worried about the unknown number of super-powered shapeshifting aliens living in disguise amongst us, what a bunch of bigots they are.' I also think that's a ridiculous way to look at things, but given how they've set up the Skrulls, I don't see a great alternative, especially given the total collapse/failure of any sort of non-Wakandan governmental action in the MCU.
Hmmm...that's also possible and would let them try to have their cake (the government has turned on our noble heroes) and eat it too (but not for anything our heroes have done, or because, as you might imagine from what our movies have shown so far, the only legitimate form of government is a superhero-ocracy, but because evil aliens took over because the government, unlike out heroes are too stupid to prevent that). But I sort of doubt it. Having cast the Skrulls as refugees and a small faction of survivors of genocide, I don't think they're going that way.

Well, I mean that woman who claimed in the second season premiere of Jessica Jones that "lizards in human skinsuits" were taking over the government might not be so paranoid after all.
I think I once mentioned on here that my impression is that had Jessica Jones season 4 would've given Trish a redemption arc. She is a major secondary protagonist, and with her mother dead and the very real consequences of doing heroing wrong staring her in the face, her story would invite all kinds of further development and, hopefully, an actual, successful origin story. Jessica and Trish need each other, and I feel like that would remain true even now.
As for how Trish would get out of prison, I could see Jessica agonizing over what to do about Trish, considering breaking her out, deciding against it, drinking a bit… and then maybe Trish gets herself out. Or outside forces intervene. Or she's able to get a really good lawyer (you know who I mean) who's able to get the charges against Trish thrown out.
I can just imagine how that defense would go if Matt was Trish Walker's lawyer: a plea of temporary insanity.
Matt argues in court that Trish was suffering the side effects of the treatment that gave her powers. She was under the influence of steroids and loosing control over her inhibitions. As a result, the line between right and wrong was blurred too much in her mind for her to know the difference between the two and by the time of her mother's murder, she had completely lost touch with reality. She snapped and brutally murdered the guy who literally had it coming to him. The other crimes can only be connected to Trish by a confession or by Jessica's testimony, so Matt uses a strategy where he gets Jessica's testimony discredited / suppressed, and has Trish testify that she was set off because Jessica helped destroy evidence in the investigation that would have put Sallinger away, further giving credence to the idea that Jessica is an unreliable witness (and Jessica agrees to go along with Matt's strategy). As a result, Trish is sentenced to time served, and is released on probation, with court-mandated therapy as a condition of said probation.
Through some guidance from Matt and from Jessica, Trish finds the missing piece she needs to regain her humanity, she helps people in need and sees new ways to be a hero. She learns violence isn't always the go-to answer and learns to rely more on her brain and problem solving. In turn, this helps her use less force while getting into physical altercations, especially with Matt's help in combat training that focuses on disabling an opponent fast instead of just trying to hurt them as much as possible.
At least, that's what I could see happening. The point of this is that as Trish is the secondary lead of Jessica Jones, it's unlikely she would have spent the entirety of a hypothetical Season 4 locked up.

Okey Dokey! It will be revealed that Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and Natasha Romanova are all Skrulls. Are, not were. They faked their respective deaths in order to take a break, but now they're ready to come back. However, they've all forgotten what exactly they were supposed to look like, so they may look and sound a little bit different in their new forms.
Going forward, this will become the standard explanation for recasting any character in the MCU after their actor leaves. It's Skrulls all the way down.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I think what will simply happen is Skrulls replace characters while the originals remain in captivity elsewhere, so you can have your moments of "oh my god Doctor Strange is a skrull!" while keeping the original intact. Hell the comics do this every now and then. It's not rocket science.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Yeah, but that still comes with the same catch-22 that prevented the actual comic event from going very far with the concept. Either:
- A character's appearances in a given film/TV show (NOT written with this twist in mind) are totally invalidated because they were already a Skrull.
- They conveniently happened to become a Skrull right before the series, so them being a Skrull has never actually influenced the story in any way and basically means nothing.
For something with so many disparate creators all piggybacking off each other like this, there's basically no good option when it comes to something like "Whoops, that character's a Skrull! Wow, when did THAT happen?" Paranoia Fuel stories only work if the paranoia fuel was embedded in the story from the start.
Which is why I'd be surprised if Secret Invasion even bothers trying to open that can of worms.

Good thing evil Trish was actually a Skrull and the real Trish has actually spent the last few years running a super temp agency.
