Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I remember reading that it took until Eternals for there to be another MCU movie that featured a cast made up of entirely new characters and absolutely zero returning characters from a previous film. Every film after Iron Man 1 featured at least one character from a previous installment.

I guess Doctor Strange (2016) technically counts though, since Thor's appearance is simply footage they shot for Thor: Ragnarok.

I feel like as long as it is part of a shared continuity they should have some references, but just background stuff is fine - the MCU is pretty damn different to the real world now.

They should make it feel organic though. I agree that talking around it makes it worse.

I was just doing some research on the real-life music WandaVision used in the show, and I found out that "Just Another Girl" by Al Hazan and Annette Tucker isn't actually a 60s song. It seems it was released in 2020, right around the time of the show's airing, and was merely mixed/produced to sound a lot older than it actually is.

I'm not sure if everyone else noticed this and I'm just the one guy who didn't, but it's still pretty neat nonetheless.

One thing I'm wondering about Blade - I've never read his comics, but as I understand it, he basically doesn't have any qualms about killing friendly neighborhood vampires and has been shown as gleefully enacting pogrom-like massacres.

I don't remember Blade killing any vampires that were harmless to humans and he's even dated a heroic vampire at one point.

As with many characters that have lasted decades, he varies

Recently he’s the sheriff of vampire Chernobyl which he seems to mostly use as an excuse to do violence at vampires

When She Hulk blew through he claimed there were no survivors by killing the survivors of the incident

He can be a dick?

I just hope they get the "ice skate uphill" line out of the way. People are going to want to hear it. Hanging on going, "Say the line!"

It can either be a great reference in the first movie or a meme that haunts his character through the whole franchise.

Y'know, it's interesting that Vision brought up the Ship of Theseus in WandaVision because Marvel is facing that exact conundrum moving forward.

Imagine, for a moment, that the next Avengers film features these characters as the titular Avengers. I'm not saying this will be the next roster; there's a couple glaring omissions and other unlikely inclusions. Just for the sake of the thought experiment, picture this roster:

  1. Carol Danvers
  2. Scott Lang
  3. Stephen Strange
  4. Kate Bishop
  5. Yelena Belova
  6. Shang-Chi
  7. Blade

Together, they fight Kang the Conqueror.

What would you call that movie? Would it be New Avengers? Mighty Avengers? Avengers Next? Or would you just call it Avengers 4? Literally every single member of the principle cast gone, and the movie bears no resemblance to the original conflict beyond the vague "Heroes fight villains" concept. Is this still the same film series or is it a new one?

I'd think it would technically still be "just" the Avengers in the same way the comics team has had several iterations. The OG comic 5 didn't actually spend that much time as a team first time around (relatively speaking).

I'm very fond of Passing the Torch / Legacy Character thematically (something I think DC has done better than Marvel, comics-wise, until maybe recently) so that's another angle. You might not be able to avenge forever but you leave a legacy for other heroes to pick up on.

I'd rather have Blade stay out of the Avengers. Make him head the Midnight Sons (possibly at the behest of Strange, or maybe Brother Voodoo if Strange goes on vacation for plot-related reasons) - Morbius will probably stay off-limits, but that still leaves Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Daimon Hellstrom, Werewolf by Night, and Elsa Bloodstone could easily be introduced as well. Maybe Black Knight too, but I think he'd be better served working with Captain Britain.

It'd be Avengers 5, not 4. Were you counting IW and Endgame as one two-parter?

I also think it's very important that the next Avengers movie (if there even is one) consists of mostly new-ish characters. Having the OG six Avengers involved in an ensemble film every time would fall into the Status Quo Is God trap the comics often have. Plus, it helps sell the fact the world is growing and changing, which I like.

In regards to the Ship of Theseus metaphor...I believe trying to continue sailing without ever trying to replace old/broken floorboards isn't viable in the long run. You might not have the same ship you did in 2008, but at least you aren't sinking in the ocean.

Yes. Because it is. The directors said it's not; They're both totally independent movies that are completely satisfying, complete stories even if you never saw the other.

But.

Come on. That's a crock of shit and everyone knows it.

You’re awfully confident about something that is rather debatable.

Personally, I can see it both ways. I’m probably more likely to see it as the “Phase 4 Avengers movie” than “Avengers 4”.

I'd only want the New Avengers name if Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, et al are invited. I still really think the iron is hot for an adaptation of the New Avengers and their theme of "the old guard of larger than life heroes aren't here any more, it's time for regular people to step up and defend themelves."

Plus, if those guys become New Avengers, that frees up the name "Defenders" to be used by the actual Defenders. The iron is hot for Dr. Strange, the Hulk, Namor, and the Silver Surfer to step up to the plate and fight off weird cosmic unimaginable shit.

QFT. This has been bugging me for ages, and now that we could theoretically possibly get a Defenders film (especially if the Namor rumors hold some weight), it's going to be an issue sooner rather than later.

TBH, I could buy the mini-team Strange assembles in MOM (him, Wanda, and America Chavez at least, possibly a couple more surprises that aren't in the trailers) calling themselves the Defenders as an in-joke in that film.

[up][up] I'd be down for that. Those guys fighting cosmic shit would definitely be a cool idea.

I still am curious how Bruce feels about having more-or-less retired after the events of Endgame, outside of recruiting Shang-Chi and presumably helping his cousin sometime in the near future. Think he misses being an Avenger and smashing things, or nah?
