Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Apparently we have a rule that we don't add anything unless explicitly stated by Word of God, i.e. Disney / Marvel Studios and actors/directors on their behalf. Huh.
Hopefully no Sam Alexander.
But yeah, I am happy. The Nova Corps in GOTG was one of the very few outright insultingly bad things in that movie.

I know Sam is a Jeph Loeb creation and all, was in the Ultimate Spiderman series (where he was kinda an ass at first), and can be a bit of a jerk even in universe, but I'd be ok with him if Marvel made him more palatable.
But it's good that Rich is coming first. I do hope we don't get the name jokes.
One Strip! One Strip! That first one is what I've been saying. Introduce him as an Anti-Villain who challenges the heroes not just physically, but in conviction and belief as well. Have him pull a Heel–Face Turn to begrudging-but-committed Anti-Hero (or alternatively, have the heroes realize he's been right all along and join his side) by the end of the first film, and have him stay that way in any future films.
Incidentally, this is why I think a Magneto who was cryogenically frozen by HYDRA like the Winter Soldier and wakes up in the present day could be more interesting than just a very old Magneto or one who has a different backstory. The Holocaust was almost 80 years ago, long before most people alive today were even born. Imagine somebody who was literally in a camp yesterday from his perspective, is now suddenly in a world that insists that's all in the past or didn't even happen, yet is seeing history repeat itself with Mutants, to say nothing of all the other real-life bigotry that still persists in the modern day.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!![]()

I like it. For similar reasons (although without the freezing), I'd like to see Blue Marvel as a character. You could make both really interesting foils to Steve Rogers.
One other idea I've suggested (probably lots of others have to) is to have Magneto have slowed aging either as a secondary power or else (I really like this idea) because of getting a blood transfusion from "James Howlett" as a kid. I can kind of imagine the scene with the Howling Commandos liberating the camps and a seriously ill young Erik being given a blood transfusion.
I like it both because it would preserve Magneto's Holocaust survivor backstory and because it would be a rare positive version of No Doubt the Years Have Changed Me in which Magneto would have a secret debt owed to Wolverine.

Sam isn’t a great Nova for a straight adaptation in that he’s got almost no connection to the Nova lore
You could smoosh him into another Nova who has more Nova going on I guess
Forever liveblogging the AvengersWhen it comes to exploring Nova lore, Dick Rider is probably the go-to.
That said, it's not an either/or. Nova is, uh, plural in a way that some other legacy characters are not. You could totally make a movie with both Richard and Sam.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. It's technically Richard Rider. He's pretty much the most well-known character to bear the Nova title. Even got promoted to Nova Prime following the Annihilation event.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. There's no justice in the world if we don't get to hear Quill say, "Ha. Ha. Your name is Dick Rider."

Yes, but Dick Grayson isn't nearly as weird or juvenile a name as Dick Rider is. Even if people primarily call him Richard, somebody's gonna point out how awkward the shortened version of it is when putting it together with Rider. No alliteration in the world can save that.
There’s at least one panel of Starfire passionately crying out that she needs Dick
Almost but not quite drowned out by all the sophomoric giggling from everyone who has seen that panel

Forever liveblogging the AvengersOtherwise Rich is the mostly likely Nova they'll go with cause he's got the main-stuff.
Sam did have a pretty decent run by Duggan by Rich's run and role in the Dn A cosmic saga is what promoted Nova into the bigtime.
Even now ever since Rich came back, Sam has been consigned as the Earth Nova and Champions mainstay while Rich has been involved in any major cosmic event since as a famous hero of the galaxy.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."

I think Werewolf By Night is just a bit of a title gag that stuck. I.e. the purpose was just to amusingly describe the character in a sentence ("Jack Russell, human by day, Werewolf By Night") and it stuck as a name.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."
