Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I've been seeing a lot of chatter shoot up very recently that Kamala's new powers are because her armbands are secretly the Quantum Bands, which would make her a Composite Character with Quasar. Possibly specifically the Phyla-Vell version, given Kamala's relationship with Carol and how the MCU has for the most part glossed over the Mar-Vell legacy in order to jump straight to Carol. If true it's a change that leaves me extremely torn - it's a clever, clean, and efficient combo of multiple concepts that solves several "problems", but quite frankly I don't see them as problems and it overall just makes me feel like the character's being done dirty. It could still be executed well, but still.

Oof. That's one way to avoid adapting LGBTQ characters. Granted, I did kind of suspect that Phylla and Moondragon were out for good, since James Gunn shot down a false casting rumor.
Also, while it's still possible, I would have thought that the MCU would connect Kamala to the Eternals. Who are kind of similar to the Inhuman Royals in terms of their general characterization and moral iffyness. And you can't convince me that Druig and Maximus are not the same character.
Genis-Vell and Phyla-Vell don't really have a place with Mar-Vell reduced to running straight into a Mentor Occupational Hazard for Carol's benefit. Unless you center them around Mar-Vell's death, which I doubt they would. Or jump Phyla straight into her Martyr gig, which I further doubt.
Conversely I actually think Moondragon's chances are fairly likely, if only because the MCU has clearly squeezed every drop it could out of Drax and it would make sense (at least from a long-form TV standpoint) to kill him off and have her replace him.

If the Quasar thing is legit then I'm increasingly suspecting that changing her powers has nothing to do with actually making them work or distinct. If the goal is to turn Kamala into Quasar (to match more closely power-wise with Carol and Monica) then they're simply sacrificing her shapeshifting to facilitate that.

It is darkly funny.
Like Mar-Vell himself has a decent legacy and is responsible for the creation of several well liked characters like Phyla, but the MCU pretty much sanded off the majority of his traits to the point the final character is borderline unrecognizable.
I get why of course, they didn't Carol to attribute any part of her origin to a man but at the same time a bit short sided as it means they can't really adapt some characters like Phyla and Hulkling without some changes.

I don't really see why the female Mar-vell couldn't have the same Summers Family Tree as the male comics character.
Like she could have hooked up with a Skrull at some point and have different Kree and Krull relatives/"in-laws", some good, some bad.
That’s the adaptation game
Comics are so densely complicated over decades that sanding off is just going to happen one place or another place.

That is true, her being women isn’t necessarily a problem.
The bigger issue is the loss of “rep”. Cause the “legacy of Mar-Vell” is a major part of these characters origins. His status as the greatest warrior to ever come out of the Kree and thus it’s greatest enemy at the time time is why the empire gives a damn over his children. It’s why they have attempted to clone him several times.
Cause they want to control him. If Hulkling was just the son of a nobody Kree and Skrull Princess they wouldn’t care, they would just assassinate him prolly. But it’s the fact he’s also Mar-Vell’s son makes him a figure to be controlled than killed off.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Something I'm curious about is how they'll factor the Snap into Kamala's characterization. Do you think they'll do the same thing they did with Spider-Man, that she got Snapped and everyone close to her conveniently did as well?
'Cause, if not, one of two things would have to be true of Kamala. Either she spent a good chunk of her formative years in the post-Snap world, where things are going to hell, everyone's traumatized, and half the people she knows are dead. Or she got Snapped herself, and Blipped back into a world where her friends and family are all five years older and have spent that time thinking she's dead.
Either of those would be a hella traumatic addition to her backstory.
I hope they don't use Mar-Vell's Gender Flip and early death as an excuse not to adapt Hulkling into their seemingly inevitable Young Avengers adaptation.
Hulkling is still very much doable. Mar-Vell clearly spent some time on Earth directly helping Skrulls...flip a couple things around but who's to say she didn't have children in that time? Sure MCU Mar-Vell isn't the legendary hero the comics version is but Hulkling's heirdom was always more Chosen One sorta stuff anyway.
I don't see why they can't say that Mar'vell was important to the Kree before going AWOL. The only reason she's not discussed at length by the Kree in Captain Marvel is because they're purposefully keeping Carol in the dark.
Of course Mar'Vell would have to have been a hero scientist rather than a hero soilder, but that works.
Okay okay Ms Marvel.
Well it's all really rather different. Her powers look pretty, and I imagine they just couldn't get the rubber power to look good on their budget. The power coming from her family's bangle... Hmmm... I guess it ties the narrative closer to her family, yes, but gosh if she hasn't got any superhuman heritage that makes the inhuman starter villain who thinks he should inherit the earth less likely to work, unless he's also inherited a super bangle from his family.
The tone looks good, though I don't like them selling Kamala as a hoofer when in the comic she's a massive try hard who often tries hard about goofy things.
She had a Wolverine team up because everyone gets one
He was mortified when she talked about fanfiction she wrote about him and Storm fighting cosmic weirdery
Also I wish that not everything was used to speculate that the mutants are coming for real THIS time
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIt would make me laugh how it would be if kamala wrote a slash-fic with Sam and Bucky as protagonists.
- Bucky: I just want to make it clear that I'm not gay.
- Kamala: I don't think you are, in fact this version of Bucky is only gay for the purpose of the story I was writing. Also, I am writing another fan-fic in which you are a woman.
- Bucky: I understand, but even if I were gay or female, Sam would be the last person I would look at romantically.
- kamala: Really?, because it seems to me that you two have chemistry.
- Bucky: The last person, I said.
- kamala (Thinking): Tsundere classic.

If it helps I think Maximus did die. Again.
The important thing is that Lockjaw is fine
