Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

People have brought up the joke before and ironically Elliot was actually significantly more into Brokeback Mountain back when it came out.
Part of that discrepancy is probably him not fully understanding either movie though it's most likely that he, a staunch conservative, has been radicalized by cancel culture rhetoric in the years since and now wouldn't like Brokeback anymore for similar reasons.
But I digress.
RIP to Hurt. I recall commentary of him looking sickly in his brief parts in Black Widow but I dunno if anyone had any bigger awareness as to his health and this illuminates a lot in hindsight. Solid actor that unfortunately was such an auxiliary part of the MCU because of it not digging into the Hulk mythos until seemingly now. Not that I was chomping at the bit for Red Hulk or anything but it'll be interesting to see how they address the lack of that General Ripper staple.

@Watchtower - I can't find a site for it (beyond the fact that he made a campaign ad for Joe Biden) but my understanding is that Elliot actually has liberal, kind of hippy-ish politics. Which of course is not at all a bar to also being homophobic.
Regarding William Hurt, I will say rest in peace, but he was credibly accused of rape and other abuse by his former girlfriend Marlee Matlin
. And the article also notes that Hurt was accused of abuse by another former girlfriend.
Right? I even paused my aggravation towards Disney over the "Don't Say Gay" bill note just because it's Kamala.
Plus, the caption bubbles and editing are giving me Into the Spider-Verse flashbacks.
Speaking of flashbacks, obligatory reference
to a comic book cover!
◊ (In both the last shot of the trailer and the poster, Kamala sits on the top of a lamppost a la Ms. Marvel #5 from the 2014 run.)

Eh, I dunno. This trailer is sort of leaning into my fear that this series will be a stereotypical high school comedy mixed with okay action, except with a healthy dose "lol we totally get Gen Z humor!" kind of vibe.
And while I have no hate towards the actress (especially since she's a fellow Canadian), Kamala is leaning too much into the Loony Fan for my taste.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."Inhumans are basically dead.
Permulter killed them, and everyone MCU related is content to leave them that way.
At least MCU wise. We're supposed to have reached the point in comics when they'd be coming back.
One Strip! One Strip!Yeah. All the Nu-humans got killed off (except Kamala and Moon-Girl if Moon Girl is even an Inhuman), but that's kinda unfair.
They did absolutely nothing wrong besides existing during the entire Inhumans are the new X-Men thing. They shouldn't pay the price for a stupid marketing push.
I don't hate the Royal Family (even if they have done some really shady shit) but honestly, they're the ones who should have died. I'm pretty sure Inhumanity and all that came from it was their fault somehow.
Feel free to correct me on that.
One Strip! One Strip!I'm seeing a lot of discourse online about Kamala's Adaptational Superpower Change. Long-time fans of the character seem to hate it while people who are just learning about her don't see what the problem is.
For me, it seems to line up more with Monica and Carol's powers, which kind of makes sense aesthetically. Otherwise, I have no strong feelings on it. Anyone else have thoughts?
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."I mean, I'm certainly not thrilled about it. I really like her original powerset and this new one feels... weird. I will admit it's mostly because I don't love change
. But also it doesn't help that I can't recall any other MCU character that an Adaptational Superpower Change happened to (besides Wanda at first but that ended up changing to being more comic accurate eventually anyway).
I don't love the power change but I'm keeping an open mind.
While I could take or leave the Inhumans, I kind of liked the "mass empowering" aspect of Kamala's powers. It also seemed to me that there was sort of a metaphor connecting being an Inhuman to immigrants who were "big" in the old country but have a lowly status in the new one.
I mainly got this sense because of how the character Kamran's mundane superiority complex very neatly translates into being a mutant Inhuman suppremacist.
And conversely, Kamala feels pride in her various identities but that feeling translates towards heroism.
And I also suppose that in light of what both the Kree and Inhumans (the Royal family ones) are like, it also makes Kamala a downplayed case of Bad Powers, Good People.

I my myself am also mixed about it.
Like I get if it's to unify her origin with Carol but still I tend to be against these changes on principle.
Everything else looks pretty good at least. Wonder who the villains are.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."There was still good Inhuman content being done during the push too. I've heard great things about the Karnak mini and pretty good things about the Black Bolt one as well.
The problem is fucking with the X-Men. That fanbase does not appreciate that corner being fucked with, especially the part that really identifies with mutants as a metaphor for oppressed minorities. Meanwhile as messed up as the Inhuman Royal Family can be they do deserve to still have their corner precisely because of how Game of Thrones messy it can all be and how that flavors the Marvel universe.
And I know it can work to acclaim because "messy kingdom on a foundation of cracking glass" is pretty much what's going on with Krakoa and THANK GOD NO ONE YELLS AT ME ANYMORE FOR MAKING THE COMPARISON.
In terms of fights and flashiness, I’m sure her powers will be creative.
In terms of story I’m uncertain. An early subplot in the comic is that Kamala has such poor self-esteem, having grown up in a culture that barely values girls if they’re not white and blonde, that she initially shapeshifts her superhero identity to look just like Carol Danvers, until she gains the confidence to appear as herself. It’s pretty direct, but arguably necessarily so. Perhaps there might be logistics problems with filming such a thing as it might necessitate having Brie Larson show up constantly as Kamala’s guise (probably just for one episode though). But the story might lack something without it, and I’m not sure the possible substitute seemingly in set photos of her just wearing a Captain Marvel costume is enough to convey her issues.

RIP William Hurt
You and I remember Budapest very differently
