Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

If it helps Bruce and Thor are prolly the only ones that can outlive him due to both being biologically immortal.

The MCU hasn't so far clarified if the Hulk is actually immortal in this version. He might still age and die in here. Or just age and not die, which is how we get Maestro.

The MCU hulk survived a bullet to Bruce Banner's head, and survived Bruce banner twice having his body mangled on the pavement after dropping from aircraft.

I don't know if the Hulk can be killed, but the Hulk can seemingly save Bruce from death. They might both age though.

Gotta wonder what would happen if the Hulk gets Alzheimer's. Might not be as dangerous as Xavier was back in Logan, but that still is a scary thought...

In What If…? (2021), Hank was able to kill Hulk, but I don't know how strong they are going to hold to that.

The Hulk is definitely not full immortal in the MCU, and whether or not he's ageless is largely academic.

Then again Banner in the comics can be killed, he just can't stay dead because he has Resurrective Immortality.

Well in this case he literally has biological immortality.

Like Cap will live longer than the average human being but he will die eventually. Hulk can potentially outlast every living lifeform on Earth.

About the only Avenger capable of that is Thor because he's a God and probably Carol and by extension Monica since both are beings of energy.

Man if Marvel did OVA's an animated special of Hulk: The End would be pretty cool.

Thinking of it, a movie or scene starring Thor and Hulk in a post-apocalyptic Earth thousands of years in the future would be really cool. Think of the Adventure Time finale.

oh hey how are you doing?

[up] I dunno, that just feels like retreading ground that Logan already covered. I could see it working, but I could also see it fall on its face.

Going back to Agger for a bit, one of the things that stands out about him is that he's not just a Minotaur corrupt corporate executive villain.

He's one who is open about being a Minotaur. He used to hide it until he realized the Marvel public is so complacent that they wouldn't care if he was a Minotaur. So by the time of Immortal Hulk he's walking around as a Minotaur 24-7. So you get to see a grotesque Minotaur wearing fancy huge business suits or expensive silk robes and drinking glasses of good Scotch.

It's akin to seeing Devil Dinosaur in a silk cravat holding a champagne flute in Nextwave, except Nextwave was very much not a serious story.

There's no indication that MCU Hulk has all of his comic version's recent weird mystical BS, we just know he's really damn durable in more than one way. We've seen him be hurt, and we still don't really know whether he ages (beyond the fact that Mark Ruffalo does, I guess).

The Green Door stuff is a very recent addition, it's like 5 years old at most.

Though him being to some degree immortal has been longer established. I think the Hulk End comic was written in the early 2000s or so.

Granted the Hulk never gets much focus so of course we don't know much about his upper limits.

Not all of it is recent though — the seeing ghosts thing is something that was introduced decades ago.

In general the original Hulk comics had Hulk encountering all sorts of weird bullshit.

[up][up] Well, The Avengers (2012) was going to have a scene where the Hulk sniffed out Loki when he made multiple illusions of himself, basically a callback to Bruce's "You can smell the crazy coming off of him" line earlier in the film. That scene was cut, so it's just Hulk immediately going for Loki mid-speech.

I like in jokes that Hulk hates Loki simply because Loki constantly smells freaking repugent to him.

@M84

I'd love if it if they introduced him in a press conference where he is addressing "the ridiculous rumors that I am secretly a Minotaur in human form"....while in Minotaur form and really only taking issue with the "secret" part of it or that he's in human form.

Alzheimer's is literally neuronal death. The Hulk would regenerate from it like it would from a headshot.

Right. In regards to my earlier post on Screen Rant, I actually got it confused with the actual youtube videos he listens to: Screen Crush.

Screen Rant is a totally different place.

So forget what I said.

.....What's everybody's opinion on Screen Crush? I like the little dog he's got hosting with him myself.

And he seems to always find a way to slip in a Your Mom joke.
