Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Wouldn't that theoretically mean that there were *actual* fifth columnists in the MCU Soviet Union working with Hydra?

Presumably, yes. HYDRA had deep cover agents in the US in WWII (see the guy who kills Erskine and declares himself "the first of many"), so they probably had in the Soviet Union as well.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."In the MCU there were presumably THREE "sides" to the Cold War - Russia and their allies, America and their allies, and also Hydra going round infiltrating both and stirring up trouble for their own agenda.
Hydra wasn't going to engage in open war with either of the other two but it would exploit both.
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."It would be really curious to see how the Soviet Union operated in the MCU. I mean, we got a small taste of it in Black Widow, but I'd really like to see them before falling in 1991.
I know some people were curious about the idea of a series focusing on S.H.I.E.L.D's years in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Sending agents to the Soviet Union could totally be a plot point.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."
I actually haven't seen Agent Carter yet. It and Daredevil are on my list since they seem like the shows worth investing in the most to me, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
Agent Carter in particular though is a really cool TV concept. Like, seeing Peggy do epic missions in the late forties and early fifties sounds really fascinating.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."The question is there to be asked if the Soviets had a full-on SHIELD counterpart or if it was just the Red Room. Given the presence of Red Guardian, it wouldn't surprise me if they just elevated the Winter Guard
to the role of Soviet SHIELD rather than Soviet/Russian Avengers (given the MCU seems to be entirely absent of that concept).
I remember when Agent Carter first released there was a lot of fan anticipation that there might be time skips between seasons so we'd see SHIELD and Peggy across multiple decades.
Peggy Carter life story effectively.
Which honestly would probably have been wasted on Marvel TV back then when the MCU backstory hadn't been filled in.
A Peggy Carter life story series now would be fascinating though. We have superheroes established to have operated during the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.
Not sure that life-story-like stories function in live action TV. But maybe five seasons with ten year time skips between each season would work, or perhaps 5 year time skips to keep it from being too jarring.
Alright I just thought of a new theory.
Here:
- Except, it will be an alternate relative of him.

I feel like the best way to go about it would be pitch a animated series about SHIELD with Peggy as the central character. Make it anthology like where each season covers a snapshots of a decade of SHIELD's existence. So 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's and 00's.
The three last decades in particular have potential given it's during them we have the Hank Pym business, Fury becoming director, Barton-Natasha recruitment, Pierce's downfall.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Could even have young Hawkeye being a villan in the 90!
Not to mention Blade, Eros, and Mar'vell kicking about doing hero stuff.
Ishrah Bradley, Winter Soldier, Red Gaurdian, the ten rings, the original Black Knight, Hank, Jen, Goliath.
Part of me really wants to introduce Wonder-man and his brother the Grim Reaper in the 60s and 70s, because they're kind of a big deal to Avengers lore, but it's hard to introduce them once Vision already exists.
Also Tigra feels so 70s and 80s to me, not for any reason I can put my finger on, but she just feels at home there.
Though you can't introduce too many super heroes retroactively, because Phase 1, 2 and 3 are meant to be depicting a superhero boom in the present. It also makes those heroes more difficult to depict in the present.
An animated series is definitely the way to go in terms of allowing a large range of characters to cameo.

Forever liveblogging the AvengersIf they do Charles Xavier in the MCU, are they going to base him off the Fox-Men's interpretation of the character, or are they gonna make him Truer to the Text? I'm curious how the American manipulative politician would work in the MCU, but I'm also curious if the X-Men Film fans will like it.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."

I don't know if that's actually true in the MCU. He was rescued by soviet soldiers and has a red star in his mechanical arm, but he's only ever seen working for HYDRA (a global organization). Bucky is more the ultimate HYDRA soldier who just so happens to have been handled by the Russian branch for a matter of geographic practicality.
Red Guardian is more straightforward a Soviet superhero, so I think he'd see Bucky as some kind of Fifth Column type of guy, serving the nazis scum infiltrated in glorious mother russia.
