Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Not surprised Mangog has yet to see his film debut. A story in which the champion of a colonizer people must defend the empire against the victims of their genocide is, uh, difficult to do well, to say the least.

Demonizing victims is always a perilous tightrope to walk when writing villains, and genocide victims are the worst to demonize.

[up][up]Specially since technically speaking they have deal with said colonizer power and is blow up, meaning villian motivation is already done.

There’s something amusing in how you worked all this time to take down an enemy empire only to finally show up and said empire is dead.

About Asgard being destroyed, at least that could mean seeing other realms: Alfheim has yet to show up and we only got a glimpse out of Vanaheim.

Random thought of the night: if there's versions of people who dislike Marvel movies who actually exist in the MCU itself, do you think they'd be happier with things? I mean, outside of all the world-ending disasters that'll plague them every day, they'll be able to live in a world where their most hated franchise doesn't dominate every theater they go to.

For guys like Martin Scorsese, that would be a dream.

Unless we're to assume that in MCU, the Vought Cinematic Universe fills the MCU's place.

Vinnie Doom from Gwenpoole is literally just a guy who hates Marvel films who lives in the marvel comics.

Guy hates how convoluted everything is and how things just seem to happen to introduce new things to happen.

Issue for him is that he's a malfunctioning Doom bot.

It's well-established that Marvel Comics exists within the Marvel Universe. It's just that there, all their comics are Based on a True Story.

There was even a story where John Byrne gets raptured into space to watch an FF story in progress because he’s running up against a deadline and the FF are too busy to talk to him

The DC comics and maybe films definatly exist in the MCU. I wonder if the DCEU gets labelled as in poor taste every so often, or is considered cathartic.

[up][up][up][up] So kind of like the Davy Crockett show (or any number of actionized and not at all historical films) where they give even more outlandish adventures to historical people, huh?

Allegedly the Marvel-Comics-in-Marvel-Comics are supposed to be historically accurate within the setting (if sometimes scrubbed of classified info like secret identities). It’s a plot point in Slott’s She-Hulk run that these comics are admissible in court as evidence, which presumably wouldn’t be allowed if they weren’t truthful.

And I know Marvel Comics exists in at least the timeline of Logan because an old X-Men comic is a plot point.

I know there's the old joke that everything in the Marvel Universe happens in New York. It'd be funny to do a Marvel story from, like, Illinois, where they aren't used to that kind of stuff going on. It'd be like "Oh yeah, my pilates instructor is a mutant with rainbow-striped hair, but we don't usually get aliens or super-villains around here..."

Huh I just had a nightmare where as the Punisher I was hunted down by a Crime Syndicate version of the Avengers which was genuinely terrifying since everyone was a monster and/or serial killer, and they all certainly looked and acted like it.

Somewhat amusingly Tony is the only one who looks completely normal (just wearing a sort of black version of his endo-sym armor) but is just as bad as the rest of them like Wasp and Ant-Man who look like misshapen bug people which Tony seeking to become a multidimensional conqueror.

And at one point Shocker went to Jersey because the only hero of note over there is Ms Marvel instead of basically tripping up a super every block like in New York.

And LA had basically no super activity until recently.

Wake me up at your own risk.

A couple of times in the Avengers comic up to where my liveblog is at someone who lives not in New York mentions that they either thought superheroes were fake or just a weird specifically New York thing

Hilariously enough one of those people was Monica Rambeau, reflecting on her attitude from before a science blew up in her face and made her awesome

I remember in the original Secret Wars, the black-suit Spider-Woman mentioned being from a suburb of Denver, Colorado a couple of times. I believe Titania and Volcana were supposed to be from that area, too.
