Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It is very rare that an actor has any significant creative control over their role. The ones that do are either actors with a reputation for improv and were hired with that as an expectation for them or they have some control of the project in another role, usually as a producer or director.

I actually like Hank Pym as a bitter old hermit. It’s entertaining and sometimes that seems like a best case scenario for his character.

But I agree it’s a shame how side lined Janet Van Dyne has gotten. Both in the movies and the comics.

So, I guess we can agree the best Wasp was the Earth's Mightiest Heroes incarnation?

So, I guess we can agree the best Wasp MARVEL ANIMATED SHOW EVER was the Earth's Mightiest Heroes incarnation?

I didn't so much fix it, as improve it a little. It was damn near perfect as is.

Just to be clear, yeah, EMH Wasp is the best.

Everyone does love her indeed.

Helps that the show also has the best Hank as well.

EMH Wasp is great. She has a simple thesis: being a superhero rocks and punching people is awesome.

She does love casually using her powers.

So she likes to just shrink and fly around as normal as walking.

Can confirm, EMH Wasp is probably my favorite female character in Marvel, period.

An annoying thought, video-games kinda avoid using them.

Janet at least was in the last Ultimate Alliance but no Ant-Man was playable and of course neither characters were playable in Squeenix's Avengers.

Hank only makes an appearance as a fucking quest-giver/storefront guy and no Wasp makes an appearance with the game once again falling into the trap of having Black Widow be the sole female Avenger.

The movie cast a long, dumb shadow on other adaptations

Amusingly DC would beat out Marvel on a playable shrinking character in a fighting game as Atom was made a DLC character for Injustice 2 while Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite didn't have Ant-Man despite the heavy MCU synergy behind that game.

Ant-Man was removed from Hawkeye's Super from UMVC3, so presumably they were planning to add him to Infinite as DLC at some point.

We can't really blame it on the movie, since it has been happening even before the Ant-Man films.

Hank was just an NPC in the original Ultimate Alliance game for example.

Going by the rumors, it seems that was the case.

I'd love to see Mephisto try a Deal with the Devil only for Matt to annihilate him with legal technicalities

Believe it or not, She-Hulk did that in #28 of Sensational She-Hulk.

Which I guess makes Jen the most powerful hero in the Marvel Universe next to Squirrel Girl.

The Leader once beat Mephisto at his own game by negotiating a favorable contract.

Then Mephisto paid him back by offering the Leader a much worse deal in a situation where he couldn't possibly negotiate a better one since the Leader was being tortured by the Penance Stare and was willing to agree to anything to get away from it.

Don't try to screw over Mephisto unless you're willing to suffer for it.

For the most part, the only people who can really get meaningful victories against Mephisto are genuinely good people. Evil people generally overestimate themselves in thinking they can outwit the devil.

IIRC Hank and Janet were slated to be part of Avengers 2012 (or at the very least an Antman and Wasp were slated), but Wright wanted his film to be the first appearance of the characters and when Antman kept getting pushed back they had to swap Antman and Wasp with Hawkeye and Black Widow.

I think Selvig plays the role Hank was going to in Avengers Assemble. I know also Whendon has said that he wanted Janet in that film. He also wanted Carol in Age if Ultron and even shot footage of her supposably?

Though by Immortal Hulk it seems that experience didn't bother The Leader much.

Though he would also repeat the same mistake with the One Below All.

[up]×2

I wonder how different things would have been if Wright had let them use Hank and Janet.

I would love if Mephisto's big appearance in the MCU was in She-Hulk with Shulkie defending one of his victims during the courtroom proceedings, and simply involves him being outwitted by a good lawyer.

Something with the same sort of tone as this:

Alternatively, someone else has gotten a good lawyer to weasel out of a contract with Mephisto, and he hires She-Hulk to argue his side of the case in court. Would be an interesting examination of the principle "everyone deserves good legal representation".
