Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Funny thought, if Marvel Animation were still a thing we prolly would have gotten an Eternals cartoon.

Cause they clearly were only interested in making shows about teams. Avengers Assemble, Guardians of the Galaxy, Hulk: Agents of Smash, Ultimate Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man. All shows starring a team of at minimum 4 superheroes for maximum merchandising.

And Eternals which stars nearly 10 heroes definitely would have made their mouths water in ecstasy. tongue

TIL that there was a rumor that Kamala Khan would be Mephisto's daughter that had to be debunked.....

I know some were disappointed about being wrong with Wandavision, but come on.

Honestly, with all the overwhelming hype surrounding Mephisto, I'm starting to wonder if it's even worth trying to use him in the immediate future. People trying to shoehorn him into being behind random things is getting really old for me.

At least Thanos got a physical appearance that confirmed he even exists in the MCU. Here, we just have fans taking in Mythology Gags and running wild.

[up] There's at least one store in France called Mephisto, and one of my choir plugins has a preset called Mephisto. But I don't think they're very dangerous.

I know that I've made jokes about people in the MCU being Mephisto before, but they were just jokes.

Personally, at this point, if I were in charge of an MCU project and saw fit to use Mephisto, what I'd do is have him not be a plot twist, just have it be "Yeah, this is a show/movie/whatever with Mephisto in it"

I'd figure they're saving Mephisto proper for Ghost Rider, if GR ever gets to actually ride again.

Although I have often wondered if Disney would allow Mephisto and all the Judeo/Christian esoterism he brings with him to show up in a major property in full form. Like, guy rules over the actual Christian Hell and is very much Marvel's take on Satan. It's possible Disney would get cold feet about the marketing damage that could cause.

I'm also really curious what the reasoning was for trying to link Kamala to Mephisto in that rumour. Like, the only connection I recall from the comics was Mephisto making a deal with Miles to save Kamala's life, which is far from making them related.

Not to mention, the sheer suggestion they'd make one of the most famous Muslim superheroes the daughter of the friggin' devil is... yikes.

Kamala’s brother once said if a boy and girl are alone they are accompanied by shayatan. So this means Mephisto showed up just to mess up Kamala’s dates. tongue

I thought it'd be an interesting idea for them to indirectly hint at Mephisto (but not show him) for the first time in Black Panther 2 (since one of BP's only remaining archnemeses worships Mephisto), and then pull him out for real in a Thor movie or Ghost Rider or something.

[up] It would be interesting if they did a meta commentary on wanting T'Challa back by having someone in Wakanda Forever make a deal with Mephisto in exchange for bringing him back to life, but with a different face. Or is that too on-the-nose?

Marvel comics don't actually have a true Satan. There is a throne of Satan in Hell that supposedly belonged to Satan once. But it's been unoccupied for so long that even the demons and devils aren't sure Satan ever truly existed. Whenever the devils have to hold meetings for whatever reason, they are held around the throne. None of them dare claim it for themselves since that would get the rest of the devils on their case, and none of them are powerful enough to fight off all of the other devils.

One devil, Marduk Kurios, isn't Satan per se. But he did model himself after the image of Satan humans have to exploit their belief in a singular ultimate evil being. Marduk for his part also doubts a true Satan ever existed.

Is there a song that's currently stuck in your head that you wish Marvel would use in one of their future installments, even if it's unlikely it'll happen?

Right now, I have two: Photon by VNV Nation and Don't Worry, We'll Be Watching You by Gotye. The former would be a cool space song, and the other kinda makes me think of Arthur Harrow since he's seemingly running a cult.

Yeah, but he's kind of a loser. I think Marvel uses "Lucifer the fallen angel and Satan the ultimate ruler of Hell are different people" interpretation.

"I Believe in a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness is the perfect kind of over-the-top rock song to play for a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, should they ever branch out from '60s-'70s era songs. Like, imagine the song blaring during an opening action scene or something.

For songs, if Ghost Rider ever shows up I really want them to use Judas Priest's Hellrider, which sounds tailor-made for the character (as you can tell by the thumbnail):

"Fight undying and eternal / Wheels bring death and Pain infernal! / Honour-bound in strength repleated / to no end they're undefeated! / Hellrider, Hellrider! / You fought their battles for them! / Hellrider, Hellrider! / You brought them through their despair! / Hellrider, Hellrider! / Your tempered steel relinquished! / Hellrider, Hellrider / You slaught them all extinguished!"

Just the "Hellrider! Hellrider!" chanting/humming would be an amazing leitmotif for the character. In general you really need rock and metal for Ghost Rider: he is a skull on fire decked in leather and spikes riding a infernal motorcycle. Character is a metal album cover come to life. And luckily, metal is full of songs about demonic things.

Moon Knight could really do with Swan's "Lunacy" at some point, given it works wonderfully as a pun (the term "lunacy" derives from lunar, i.e moon-based, craziness).

The religious-ish chanting of "Lunacy! Lunacy!" really suits the character with the mythological aesthetic and the dark, somewhat incoherent and unsettling lyrics fit the story of a haunted man trying to grapple with the divine quest (possibly) placed upon him.

[up][up] I usually don't care much for Swans, but that song was pretty cool, and I can see it fitting for Moon Knight.

The heavy metal song was also pretty cool too.

Honestly, I'd say that the biggest argument against using Mephisto is comic writers' fondness for using him as some kind of divorce agency. Getting rid of Wanda's kids and breaking up her and Vision. Same for Spider-Man and Mary Jane, and for Doctor Strange and Clea.

Okey Dokey!
