Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

That's great and all but does he have, like, the superpowers to back it up?
"You can shoot me, stab me, blow me up, it won't even matter!" is a bold sentiment. But how well does he actually hold up to being shot, stabbed, and blown up? It sounds like a costume choice meant to proclaim that he's an invincible juggernaut, but that only makes sense if he's an invincible juggernaut.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Marc is vaguely immortal as apart of his mystical thing.
The current run acknowledges that he has died 3 times before and when asked if he is unkillable, he responds he doesn't know.
And later when almost killed by Zodiac he says "'You gonna kill me Terry? Go ahead. I'll come back. Just like I always do. And then I'm going to put you through a wood chipper."
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."He’s not alone in that regard
A lot of comic characters can just come back for Reasons
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI think it's interesting how a lot of Moon Knight's mystique comes from the fact that even he has no idea who he is, or how he does things. He's like a living ghost story that had multiple ways of being told because the truth of what happens with him is impossible to fathom.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."This does not sound at all like a well-written character.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.His whole thing is "Is he insane or is he mystical?"
So copious mind fuckery is his brand.
The 14-issue Jeff Lemire run is entirely set in Marc's deteriorating brain as he battles Khonshu for control making it a series long Battle in the Center of the Mind.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Every time I hear anything about Moon Knight I’m amused and baffled because I first know him from appearing in Werewolf by Night as a werewolf hunter but deciding to skip out on completing the job, steal the anti-werewolf gear his employers gave him, and go off to be a spin off character
And he is massively more popular than Werewolf by Night now

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverMK is a more character-centric story with a greater focus on cerebral themes and tone.
He's akin to Daredevil, tough as grit bare-knuckle brawlers prone to lots of introspection on their violent psychosis.
Difference being that DD emphasizes his Catholicism while MK centers on his disparate mental state.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."For a primer on Moon Knight since Tobias asked: He's basically the fighting champion of a moon god of jutice Khonshu
. Or he's crazy (or both). That's the pitch. His powerset as it were is somewhere between "peak human reflexes and strength plus a shitload of high-tech gadgetery", and some mix of "occasional power-ups granted by the fickle patronage of his moon deity Khonshu" and "Power Born of Madness".
The boasts Slim commented are related to the fact he has a very shaky grasp on reality. Him being crazy isn't memes, he has legitimate mental problems grasping what's real and what's not and given he's the usual POV character, the audience has too. This has been portrayed in a multitude of manners, but the most extreme one was Jeff Lemire's run on the character which played with the idea the entirety of the character's history (and by extension, the entirety of the marvel universe) may just be the vivid hallucinations and fantasies of a schizophrenic man in a mental facility. Hell, maybe our reality is just a dream of MK's as well.
Choice quotes:
"Mercenary Marc Spector died in Egypt, under the statue of the ancient deity Khonshu. He returned to life in the shadow of the moon god, and wore his aspect to fight crime for his own redemption. He went completely insane, and disappeared. This is what happened next."
"This is the truth learned: That being Moon Knight is not a curse...nor a state of penance. It is simply who and what he was always meant to be."

"All you Fascists bound to lose."He is a character who when written well is very interesting as the ambiguity of his situation and mental state can lead to some legitimately challenging stories.
Unfortunately he's also easy to write badly and plots/storylines can get messy and convoluted.
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."Examples of bad runs include the 2016 Bemis one and while not technically a run the Age of Khonshu arc from Jason Aaron’s Avengers.
The latter especially just ditches all the interesting characters bits of MK to instead focus on dumb power level shit like Moon Knight conquering the world and power-jacking Avengers to become a God.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Whats funniest is that Moon Knight himself basically declared 'this is dumb' by the end.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers![]()
Both him and Black Panther do suffer on the assumption that they are basically Batman. Which huh yeah I think Aaron has written both of them as Batgods.
BP is a bit of a worse case since he’s basically if you apply Batgod to an entire country.
Well Moon Night at one point did carve someone's face off though it didn't kill the guy.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."![]()
I mentally have to tell myself it's not every time I do it.
I think Black Panther would indeed be Marvel's version of Batgod in the purest sense, as in the "borderline omniscient wheels-within-wheels chessmaster with access to a bizarre level of high-tech gadgetery punking characters above his weight class". MK's power creeps generally tend to come from Khonshu (which I guess would make him more accurately Marvel's equivalent to The Spectre as "In-Universe inconsistently powered character with multiple personalities") rather than masterplans like Batman and Black Panther.
MK's fractured mental state generally precludes him from being a elaborate schemer in this fasshion. He's clever and does outhink his villains, but it's difficult to be a master planner when you're zig-zagging between three (or more) different personalities and also you're not sure what is real and what's not.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."

I'm just now reminded of Peacemaker when Chris shows up in full costume and his team makes fun of what exactly is stealthy about bright red and white and Chris replies its to strike fear in the hearts of his enemies.
And thats when it hit me now, yeah its not about stealth its about showing the enemy that you Know No Fear.
Thats exactly Marc's MO, he dresses up in all white to show that he's not scared of them. You can beat the crap out of him, shoot him in the heart, shoot him in the head, it doesn't matter. This all white figure like a ghost is still coming at you because he's not afraid of you and can't die.
Because at the end of the day its not about practicality, its about sending a message.
