Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Its like a partnership, the Hammer can't doing anything without Thor, and Thor for the use the Hammer the Hammer has to find him worthy

" I do enjoy that movie and how it reinvented Thor to make him more interesting than his previous two movies"

I feel is less reinvested in thor and just decide to disregard everything and just ram up the "marvel comedy".

Is intersting because the movie did thing that have done elsewhere would come as awfull or mean: killing thor side chararter? check, suddenly revealing a piece of backstory that wasnt told before? check, destroy the place were the hero dwell most of the time? check.

I kinda tell you how little people care about that in the first place.

The thing is I'm not sure if Ragnarok fits as "Marvel comedy" in the usual sense? Compare it to Waititi's other stuff and it has a lot of the hallmarks of his usual humor. Kind of deadpan and outlandish stuff.

I feel like Shang-Chi is a great movie hampered by the fact that it is an MCU film. This is the first time I felt this way about a Marvel product.

I actually enjoyed Shang-Chi so much that I legit forgot that it was still set in the MCU right up until the first post-credit scene, at which point I felt kind of disappointed.

Cross-posted from the No Way Home thread (no spoilers):

No Way Home has crossed the billion dollar mark. That's unfortunate.

Not for No Way Home, but for Shang-Chi, Black Widow, and Eternals. No Way Home was an idea guaranteed to break the billion dollar mark under normal circumstances. The trailer alone gave the movie a billion-dollar promise. They'd have to really fuck up the movie in order to fall short due to the premise alone. For reference, see Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

But that's under ordinary circumstances. We're in pandemic circumstances. So the most interesting thing going into this was going to be how this guaranteed billion-maker's performance reflects on the effects of the pandemic on box office sales, which could then be used to examine the underwhelming performances of Shang-Chi, Black Widow, and Eternals.

And the answer is... The pandemic has barely any effect on ticket sales at all. The guaranteed billion-maker made a billion within the first two weeks of release. And. Well. That's disheartening, especially as someone who really liked two out of three of those movies.

I mean...it's not exactly surprising. It's goddamn Spider-Man we're talking about here. His popularity literally overshadows everybody in Marvel, especially when compared to two IPs that only became famous recently.

If you had to pick a Marvel movie for some escapism from your day-to-day life, it makes sense to go to see a movie about a character that everyone loves instead of one that people might love if good word-of-mouth is apparent.

It could be argued that Spider-Man is less affected by the pandemic than the other three movies were due to releasing later than they were, with a lot more people vaccinated at this point. Also, which ones of the other Marvel movies were also released on Disney+ premium? I know Black Widow was, but I can't remember if Shang-Chi and Eternals were.

[up] Only Black Widow released on Premium. Because the movie lost money and the lawsuit Scarlett Johansson filed in response to Disney reneging on their initial deal, nothing has been dual-release ever since.

And seeing how much more successful the films have been just at the box office, I'd say it was a good decision.

Normal box office conditions includes releasing in China. And No Way Home is blowing past $1 billion without a Chinese release and with only rumors suggesting it coming by mid-January. This isn't a billion-dollar premise that made that billion as planned, this is a multi-billion-dollar premise that still managed to squeeze a billion in spite of everything. And I think that can be said confidently given the next two most successful movies after NWH are Chinese-exclusive releases.

So no, NWH is the exception that proves the rule. The box office is still at the mercy of a pandemic-traumatized mostly-young audience picking and choosing what they agree is "worth it", and the multi-franchise Spider-Man crossover movie is the mother of all events. And while Omicron's definitely freaked people out people are still showing confidence in increasingly going out with vaccinations and now boosters, though I don't expect anything to get this close again until The Batman unless Uncharted turns out phenomenal.

[up] So looks like China's really serious on cracking down on foreign influences, huh? I know that they banned Shang-Chi and Eternals, but it's very surprising to see they don't have a release date planned for Spider-Man.

Then again, maybe they're just taking Omnicron more seriously than most countries maybe?

I just realized that at the end of Far From Home, Beck opens fire with the drones despite himself being in the way. As a result, during the fight, one of the drones spins around and pegs Beck. There's speculation that he may have survived, but so far as what the film is telling us is concerned, Beck was killed by this gunshot.

At the end of Far From Home, Beck orders the drones to shoot, knowing that he's in the line of fire. As a result, one of his drones shoots and kills him.

At the end of Far From Home, Beck opens fire with himself in harm's way, and accidentally shoots himself.

At the end of Far From Home, Beck shoots himself.

They fucking adapted Quentin Beck's suicide in the most clever way possible. [lol]

" I'm not sure if Ragnarok fits as "Marvel comedy" in the usual sense? "

I think this is because the movie take even less seriously than other marvel movies and marvel movies already have a bit of a fame or lacking seriousness or overeallyinng of bathos, ragnarok does feel it ramp it up at times, specially with banner and thor segment for example.

I see it as this: Most MCU films are serious films with lots of funny moments. Ragnarok is an outright comedy with lots of serious moments.

Given everything that happens before and in Ragnarok and how Thor almost has a breakdown with what happens after it, you could read into it that Thor is playing up the wacky road trip side of things to avoid thinking about how he is losing/has lost everything dear to him

[up][up] It would be amazing if we could get an adaptation of the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man arc where an imposter pretending to be Mysterio, an actual legitimate successor to Mysterio, and the undead wraith of the original Mysterio bound to a demonic master all converge on Spider-Man simultaneously resulting in a four-way brawl with illusions compounded upon illusions compounded upon illusions.

Huh, I haven't seen No Way Home yet, but I guess that confirms that Mysterio's still dead for me.

Like, I remember some people speculating that he was pretending to be Strange or faked all the returning villains just to screw with Peter some more.

... I'm gonna look like an idiot if that's actually the case. tongue

"Ragnarok is an outright comedy with lots of serious moments."

It dosent help that MCU comedy is "serious moment undermind by comedy" and since this movie play that a lot, it feel even the serious moment aren that serious.

That's one of the tie-in's to Civil War, right? I love that one.

And they could totally do it, too. Mysterio, as of the end of Far From Home, is effectively an organization and not a person who leads that organization: it's a group of people all of whom have access to the drones and the illusion tech, and who may or may not be hunted by the law.

Any one of them could pop up at this point and say "I'm Mysterio." Heck, all of them could be, and you could do a plot with them all warring against each other. One of them could be Francis Klum, one could be Daniel Klum, one could be just a freakin' robot as a nod to Ultimate Mysterio, etc.
