Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Katie Hopkins seemingly didn't believe India was a geographical location?

Katie Hopkins is a person? I thought she was a dream demon that escaped into the real world somehow.

I also don't know who Katie Hopkins is so this might be true.

On the note of Chavez having a bad run, it’s not that she had a bad run everyone does, but the fact her first ever shot at headlining her own title was bad and tremendously so.

Like it would have been okay if the book was just unmemorable at worst like a lot of ongoing tend to be, “forgettable but worth a read if your interested in the character.” But Gabby Rivera’s run on the book was flat out awful to immense proportions and due to Chavez’s recency would obviously hurt her image far more than Spider-Man or Iron Man getting a bad run.

The whole thing is incredibly unfortunate and a tragedy on how a bad writer can heavily stain a character.

I literally have no idea who America Chavez is, so I can't exactly give an opinion on any of this.

All I can do is remain curious.

Another bad effect was that a lot of online harassment got directed at Rivera and she left the Internet for a couple of years. I’ve read her first book (Juliet Takes A Breath) and I don’t think she’s a bad writer, she’s just new and has a very run-on sentences style that doesn’t translate well to comics. Some creatives need a couple of smaller works first to iron out their kinks before they’re ready for a big IP project.

Basically she was a Breakout Character, but her first breaths under her own name as a Breakout Character was an Audience-Coloring Adaptation of a Dork Age. So unfortunately that's what most people end up associating with her, even if it's not entirely fair.

The only things I know about America's solo are "Holy Menstration" and her apparently not being able to go two sentences without randomly bringing up that she's a lesbian from the Lesbian Dimension.

...Lesbian Dimension sounds like a cool band name.

America Chavez, to explain the character, was a member of the Young Avengers, the Ultimates and West Coast Avengers who is a flying brick who can kick star shaped interdimentional portals. She comes from a different timeline and is the only her in the multiverse.

She's quiet, extremely self confident, gay and is Kate Bishop's best friend.

It’s something you can claim when a character hasn’t been adapted yet

The Shadow King and Mojo are also supposed to be one of a kind in the multiverse.

So by that logic the Mojo from the X Men cartoon is the same as the one from the comics

Wait if they're going to adapt her to the MCU than how is she the only one in the multiverse? Unless the MCU-multiverse is siphoned off from the rest of the Marvel multiverse. (That was one of the points of Loki, although it's not true anymore...)

Looking on the wiki, there are already at least 6 other Chavez's in the multiverse, not including tv shows and video games. I think it's safe to say the "only one in the multiverse" thing has been ignored. As for beings like the Shadow King or Shuma-Gorath, I just assume that since they're so powerful/eldritch any variants are merely offshoots or minor extensions of their being.

The idea was that her home dimension was from outside the Multiverse and so there was only one of her.

However, that idea really only came from one writer, who wasn't even one of America's co-creators. A few other versions of her have popped up from time to time.

@Dean Cole Oh yeah that infamous panel, Kate’s dialogue there is fucking wild.

Kate: “I'm literally intrigued and in awe of both of them. [America and Magdalena] If this is what it's like to date other women, then I applaud all the women dating women right now because this is incredible. Motorcycle courtship chase? Check. Missiles and explosions? Check. And now "we're just flying together in the sky, heading to a giant heart." I swear, if they come back married I'm going to be so jealous. *sigh* Always the bride's best archer, never the archer-bride.

Either a robot wrote that, or the writer tried to see how many ways one could limbo out of actually make Kate come out of the closet or something.

Marvel once nixed a story for Secret Wars II where Kate actually came out as bi, so she’s trapped as the straightest girl who keeps insisting she’s totally not closeted while admiring gay romances and most of her friends and guys she dated are gay. tongue

However, that idea really only came from one writer, who wasn't even one of America's co-creators.

Gillen and McKelvie are considered My Real Daddy to America Chavez as they invented most of her current characterization and power set like star portals. Casey’s version was straight and couldn’t even teleport.

I think as long as America Chavez keeps enough of the core aspects of her character to be recognizable as America Chavez, the movies will be able to create a version of the character that works well within the context of MoM with the flaws from her worse interpretations either eliminated or greatly diminished.

We know we are getting star-shaped portals anyways (there's a brief shot of Doctor Strange falling into one in the teaser).
