Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I've been told that America Chavez had a bad run in the comics, with a series that people didn't like very much because it was allegedly bad quality. I haven't read it so I can't say for myself.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Chavez has had one or more bad runs that include a lot of cringeworthy Totally Radical "How do you do fellow kids?" dialogue that made her come off as grating. Given the MCU style's predilection for this kind of humor, it's entirely possible this aspect of her character is one the movies will be stuck with.

Get the point you’re making, but I can definitely see why a bad run-in with a character can turn someone off, especially when you don’t have other works to help your perception of them. Hell, it took me while to process that the “Holy Menstruation” panel was real not just a joke edit.

If we can forgive Tony Stark for becoming Turbo-Hitler, I think we can forgive America for being mildly grating in dialogue.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Can attest to Tony being quite despised by very large swaths of fandom, so not the best comparison. It's to the point that many believe the portion of fanbase who have forgiven and accepted him knowing his actions make up a delusional Fan Dumb of terrible people, whether fairly or not (IMO sometimes it does become needlessly personal, although, many of said vocal Tony stans do have a reputation for being huge Jerk Asses and for sabotaging fandom events for essentially not worshipping Tony, so it's not without reason).

Oh America Chavez will get the woke sjw bullshit politics from people like Yellow Flash on youtube and be called a femmanist nazi from Critical Drinker or Midnight's Edhe before making a Doctor Strange 2 is not a triumph video.

Just Makima.America talking a Totally Radical way in her first solo run was pretty out of character considering Gillen’s Young Avengers and Al Ewing’s Ultimates, the series’s that made her popular, characterize her as saying little unless she has to. She keeps things close to the chest and isn’t above having a hidden agenda from her teammates. As long as the MCU portrays her in a similarly taciturn and secretive manner, she’ll be good.

...I think the only person I ever saw on these forums having a beef with Chavez, consistently and constantly, was Beatman 1 and he's no longer with us.
No, he's not dead as far as I know. Just got booted.
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.Even though America was based off some guy's name?
And people having place names isn't rare?
Same

Forever liveblogging the AvengersShe’s had a more recent run which was… eh. Tonally it was much more coherent and less cringey than her prior run, but its plot centered on rewriting America’s origin from something mystical and inspirational to mundane and grim. It’s like Superman learning Krypton was never real. I wasn’t a fan.
Flattering

Beatman was.
And now he's no longer among us.
I'm starting to see a pattern.
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position. To Chavez's favor she has worked best as a member of a team as in Young Avengers and Ultimates so she shoukd do pretty good here here as a supporting member to the strange team.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."For real life examples look no further than America Ferrera (who I’m willing to bet was the real life inspiration for naming Mac Chavez.)
”Ab-si-dee”, apparently.

What's some ppl beef with Chavez anyway?
