Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Hopefully, it won't be handled as poorly when Sam Elliot inevitably Red Hulks out in the MCU.

Well, Civil War was a pretty widely hated arc, yet the MCU managed to turn it into a very popular movie. So I'd say they can definitely make Red Hulk work.

Nick Fury Jr. was also pretty universally hated.

Sam Eliott was Ross in the 2003 Hulk movie. MCU Ross is William Hurt.

Speaking of hated storylines, what other disliked stories could be turned into a movie? I wondered how a Civil War II movie could justify having heroes fighting each other again.

Well, the Sokovia Accords issue was never really resolved, was it? Though it would need a twist at least so it doesn't just feel like doing the same story again.

There are a lot of laws out there that ultimately never got repealed, but nonetheless stopped mattering because nobody could be arsed to enforce them anymore. I'd guess the Sokovia Accords are probably going that direction. Technically still on the books, but meaning fuck-all.

Fair enough. That is an unarguable truth.

But besides that, the net is a cesspool of lies.

I still think Go Down Swinging could be a fantastic finale for a Spider Man series which included both goblins and symbiotes.

Secret Invasion was widely seen as a "great premise but pretty squandered". A lot of great events suffer from this.

A lot of Bendis events could work better as not company wide crossovers

Oh dear God, yeah. As much as people like to bash the Whedon movie, the comic event is like THE worst event of all times. No exaggeration.

At times I never understand how Bendis got so big as he is cause a lot of the stuff he wrote really does come across as just slow paced and awful.

Bendis is extremely hit and miss. When he writes good stuff, it's excellent. When he writes bad stuff, it's downright atrocious. There's rarely something in-between.

I think it was his run on Ultimate Spider Man that really made him a big name. I've admittedly haven't read any of it, but everyone says it's pretty much the best stuff to come out of the Ultimate Universe.

I kind of think event comics just don't particularly work. The casts are too big and there's never enough issues to explore the premises, and because they're running concurrently to everyone's solos the continuity becomes difficult.

And yet they sell so well.
