Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up] Huh. Good point. I didn't think of that.

But maybe Strange's actions would accidentally make a Multiverse? Same with whatever Wanda's possibly doing with the Darkhold?

The multiverse plan doesn't exist because of Loki. Loki exists because of the multiverse plan.

It's doubtful Dr. Strange or Spidey will have anything that relies on Loki to exist.

[up] For No Way Home, I definitely agree.

But if Loki's rumored appearance in Multiverse of Madness is proven true...who knows.

The way I personally interpreted the end of Loki is that the TVA pruning Kang timelines and preventing the multiverse doesn't mean that the Sacred Timeline was the only universe in all of existence; it's just that they wanted to stop Kang from existing on Earth-199999, and probably either left the likes of the Raimiverse, Foxverse, 616, etc. alone or simply were unaware that they existed. To them, "The Multiverse" probably just meant "199999 and it's adjacent timelines".

[up] Yeah, from what I remember, the Sacred Timeline is more-or-less a "blueprint" in regards to what should happen to prevent Kang from showing up. Seeing how wildly different the Foxverse, Raimiverse, and other universes are, it's just likely Kang can't show up in those timelines.

The Sacred Timeline is a well-oiled computer program that occasionally gets viruses or malware that has to be gotten rid of. That same malware isn't exactly effective on an entirely different machine hosting a different server.

I don't know if this analogy makes sense.

[up][up][up] Multiverse of Madness has been in production since almost after Dr. Strange 1 came out.

If anything, we know No Way Home's sudden shift to a multiverse plot was a mid-development move, but it was probably done in relation to Dr. Strange, not Loki.

[up] Yeah, I definitely don't think NWH ever had anything Loki related in it during its conception and production. And seeing how disconnected Peter is to the character, it wouldn't even make all that much sense to include stuff related to the character unless they wanted to seriously derail the story for whatever reason.

But I do still think that Loki and Multiverse of Madness are somewhat connected. Especially since Loki writer Michael Waldron worked with Sam Raimi on MoM.

I really need to finish watching Loki so I can know what everyone's talking about... and all the other Marvel shows for that matter, the only one I'm fully up to date on is Hawkeye. Which I've enjoyed quite a lot, actually. Kind of sad there's a mere two more episodes to go apparently, I could definitely go for a few more.

Though on the other hand, I think I've had most of the main plotlines for the Disney+ shows spoiled anyway.

Wandavison wasn't the beginning of the Multiverse arc that was Loki or Lokis being given a choice, a moment of utter freedom with all the consequences attached. Wandavision was about Wanda mastering her powers and becoming one of the most powerful beings in the MCU.

I think there are two types of Multiverse, Independent Universe ( could include the Foxverse) which existed since the beginning of the MCU, and then come the Varinatns of the Sacred Time, including the Rami Verse. Maybe Strange 2 deals with the Varintis makes sense if Loki appears ( I can just see one of the heroes saying 'Didn't you die' and Loki going 'Technically I did')

Sincerely S Awatching.

If the events of Loki never happened, would those films' plots even be possible to happen?

Like, Strange couldn't accidentally summon supervillains from a multiverse that doesn't exist, right?

On the other hand, it's a bit unclear if He Who Remains would care about worlds like the Raimiverse where Nathaniel Richards doesn't exist and therefore Kang is an impossibility.

In-universe, no. Without Loki disrupting the Sacred Timeline, there wouldn't be a multiverse.

But in a meta sense, yes. If Loki was never made, then Loki wouldn't have disrupted the T.V.A. and made it possible for a multiverse to exist. But if Loki was never made, the T.V.A. wouldn't exist and there would be no reason that a multiverse couldn't exist.

Loki is a profound demonstration of a philosophy that comic writers call "the illusion of change". The consequences of the story are so profound that they distract you from the fact that all they've actually done is put the toys back in the box where they found them. Loki solved a problem that Loki invented to solve, and thus has a net-zero impact on the greater continuity.

It feels like nothing will ever be the same again. But, actually, everything is the same. Loki only erased a roadblock to multiversal storytelling that Loki put there in the first place.

I more or less agree with Tobias. They would've had a multiverse regardless of whether or not they made Loki, but at the same time, most people feel it was a great ride, so you could say it was worth it.

You can only write so much in your forum signature. It's not fair that I want to write a piece of writing yet it will cut me off in the mid

Loki was definitely a ride, however, what made the Multiverse birth so impactful was because of all the foreshadowing, we knew beforehand that Kang was coming, What if was coming and Mutilvers of Madness was coming, but then Loki came and it was all, Holy Sh**t it all connected, it so much bigger then we could have imagined and so much potential both good and bad (In-Universe).

[up] Also in the next Hawkeye it rumored that the Kingpin. will appear and the in No Way Home comes Daredevil. both are only a few days apart They did the same thing with Falcon and Winter Soldier and Black Widow, involving our mysterious countess. So I feel confident based on that logic.

Sincerely S Awatching.

Looks like the Thor: Love and Thunder poster has leaked. And honestly, it's looking just as experimental as Thor: Ragnarok's posters.

Supposedly Taika Waititi is going even more nuts with this movie than he did with Ragnarok. Very curious to see where this goes.

It's the conceptual poster, gives us a good idea of what is coming. When they said Jane Foster was going to become Thor I thought she would become in the third Act or final minutes. Looks like she might be the Mighty Thor from start to finsh.
