Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Speaking of Thor, I wish the Asgardian army had moments to shine, but to be a "Badass Army" its only role is to be easily defeated.

For a culture where every soldier is supposed to be just as strong Spider-man and with centuries of experience, Asgardians are somewhat weak.

Even in What if, a Shield agent is shown fighting an Asgardian using only his fists.

(Kind of,superhuman powers are not something all the population has)

It should be noted there is only like a small handful of Gods in Thor.

Thor, Loki, Odin, Frigga, Hella, Siff, and Heimdall.

And we see no one else.

Depends if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is canon. That show had a couple episodes with a random, blue-collar Asgardian, and he was strong enough to bend metal bars with his bare hands.

Nope, in the comics, even an Asgardian Mook is as strong as Spider-man.

But in the movies, the Asgardian does not appear to have powers, and can be killed like any human.

I mean when Hela was mowing them down like ants it wouldn’t have really mattered if they have spider strength because Hela is above Thor’s level and can spam swords like a Gilgamesh

Yeah, I mean they could still have some level of super-power but pale before the actual gods.

Every Asgardian has a degree of superhuman strength and durability. Even the average Asgardian civilian is much stronger than even Captain America. The issue of course is that not every Asgardian is a trained warrior.

That last bit is relevant since the Asgardian refugees who survived the destruction of Asgard were all civilians. Their actual standing warriors were the first to be slain by Hela.

Speaking of Thor, I wish the Asgardian army had moments to shine, but to be a "Badass Army" its only role is to be easily defeated.

For a culture where every soldier is supposed to be just as strong Spider-man and with centuries of experience, Asgardians are somewhat weak.

They actually are more impressive when you realize that these aren't actually trained soldiers but civilians taking up arms.

They're gonna have to do something to make Shuma-Gorath distinct from Starro the Conquerer.

Would not be hard at all considering both aren’t really similar characters aside from being giant cephalopods.

The leaked audition to America Chavez claims a demon is abducting children, so presumably that’s Shuma-Gorath and who knows what he’s doing with them.

While I would extremely hype if it definitely absolutely was Shuma in Multiverse of Madness, I feel inclined to point out that Dr. Strange 1 also had a LEGO set with him fighting a horrible tentacled multidimensional monster, and that turned out to not be a hint of Shuma after all.

Lego sets marketed pre-release generally don't actually tend have scenes from the film anymore, specifically because studios like Disney started complaining. Nowadays they just make up scenes and throw them onto a set.

Also, y'know, the LEGO set literally calls the tentacle monster "Gargantos", not "Shuma-Gorath". It's not Shuma, it's this thing, a completely separate green one-eyed tentacle monster.

On another note, I just saw that comic page of Hank and Janet having kinky sex with the Pym Particles and now I'm wondering "Oh man imagine this happening between Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer" [lol]

You can imagine younger versions of them doing that at least.

MCU Hank at this age cannot safely shrink down anymore due to MCU Pym Particles being toxic.

On another related note and segueing into a more palatable topic, shame that Janet who is a founding Avenger and just generally a pretty major character overall wound up pretty much a bit character whose only major appearance is in a single movie and even then a small role at that.

Wasp even lead the Avengers several times. Its pretty side how immensely minor she is here.

Maybe we'll end up with a more comic booky situation where there's different teams instead of just THE Avengers. There's the main team, but also a Young Avengers and a more out there cosmic/quantum team where the likes of Wanda, Wasp and others hang out.

I'm still hoping at some point we get a 1980s team adapted with Janet, Hank, Bradley and Mar'Vell. It seems both unlikely and an eventuallity.
