Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up] I thought that was answered with the showcase of the genocide of the Aztecs. If they couldn't interfere with that horrific event, then there was no chance for them to interfere and stop Hitler.

I'm pretty sure Phastos contributed exactly 0 to nuclear physics development.

It's clear in the movie that, while he wants to do more for the creatures they were sent to protect, he still works within the limits Ajak set, and they explicitly don't involve themselves in human conflicts.

No, humans developed the bomb all on their own, and what Phastos hates is that his direct involvement in their development early on lead to the horror unleashed in WW2.

I agree, the film provides a pretty good argument that Phatos never designed weapons for humans. That goes against at least two of their codes.

So apparently Sony has 3 more movies with Tom Holland and Marvel Studios lined up.

This should be interesting.

[up][up] It should also be that Tom Holland will continue to be Spider-Man in that trilogy. Guess ppl here might finally get their "adult" Peter Parker.

So I just noticed something. Thor was able to defeat Hela by destroying Asgard, because Asgard is the source of her power. When Surtur destroyed the city, Hela's power was broken and Surtur was able to kill her too.

I'm watching Thor: Ragnarok right now and Valkyrie said something very interesting in the scene where Thor attempts to recruit her. Hela's power comes from Asgard "same as yours," she says to Thor.

Whatever aspect of Asgard provides Hela with her Goddess of Death abilities also provides Thor's God of Thunder abilities. That's why he needed Stormbreaker in Infinity War. The destruction of Asgard stripped Thor of his power, just the same as it did to Hela. Stormbreaker and Mjolnir act as independent generators for Thor's godly abilities.

[up]You mean in What If??

He did do surprisingly well, despite the fact that he should arguably be weaker since he's only using Mjolnir. Even with Carol claiming she had to hold back and all, I'd think she'd still take that fight a little better.

While she was holding back she was clearly intending to hurt him but absolutely none of her blows actually did anything.

If Carol has to risk blowing up the planet to defeat him then that indicates his durability is absolutely massive.

Loki, meanwhile, has to settle for learning magic from Frigga. Because, as an adopted Jotun, he is not eligible to receive cool god powers from Asgard itself.

[up] But does that mean Frigga's powers don't come from Asgard? And if so, where? And does Odin's power come from Asgard too?

In the comics, Frigga is from Vanaheim

Which is populated by weirdo shamans and druid types

Frigga and Loki's abilities are magic. They've been referred to as such since even back in the first Loki film, when the MCU was otherwise downplaying magic. Those two are practicing sorcerers.

[up][up] Okay, that makes sense. But Odin's the god of magic in traditional mythology, correct? Does that apply in the MCU as well? And if so, is it the same as Frigga and Loki's or different?
