Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

This is probably only tangentially related to the thread, but I thought it was cool: Scientists have identifed a problem with Thanos' snap.
No, not the '50% of all life' part, apparently it's impossible to snap your fingers using a metal glove. You need skin friction, apparently, and a finger snap involves angular acceleration exceeding that of professional baseball pitches (from the research paper). This research actually has practical applications for robotics and mechanical engineering generally.

Its actually something the movies sort of take into account.
You only get that nice snap noise when the infinity stones are in use. In Endgame, after Tony secretly steals the stones from under Thanos' nose, Thanos only gets a sad little click, which can be attributed to the glove having ridges for articulation.
Teal deer, the Infinity Stones know how to be dramatic.

Forever liveblogging the AvengersPutting aside Thanos's sad little no-stones snap, obviously the Infinity Stones are sentient enough to realize his intent.
"Okay, he's snapping his fingers, guess that means he wants us to do our thing now."
"Thank God. I've got this green chick inside me and it's creeping me the hell out. The sooner we end this the better."
"But why is he snapping his fingers? Doesn't he realize that's not gonna actually work with a metal glove?"
"That's not the point. He's too stubborn to change his mind, so it's the gesture that counts, not the sound."
"Okay but why would he choose a gesture that doesn't work with—"
"Look mate, I don't care if you're the Mind Stone, you're new here. I've been here the longest, I know how he thinks."
"And how he talks. Dude wouldn't shut the hell up about 'the snap of his fingers' this and 'simple calculus' that. He's worse than that Nazi prick from seventy years ago."
"Yeah, thanks a lot for sending that guy to me, by the way. Fuck you."
"Shouldn't we be doing the thing? He's literally got an axe in his chest right now."
"Yeah, it's TIME for us to get to work! Heheheh."
"Fuck you too, Time Stone."
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!![]()

Okay... Let Me Get This Straight... The plot of Avengers: Infinity War involves a giant purple alien and his lieutenants trying to steal six magic rocks to create portals and turn people into dust, while going up against a space god, a magical doctor and a talking raccoon amongst several other quirky characters. And the scientists are most upset about the fact that said giant purple alien could snap his fingers with a metal glove on?

"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."There’s the Infinity Watch team name they can use
And that recent arc about the stones possessing people
Forever liveblogging the Avengers
x4
The actual paper only ever mentions Marvel once ("The finger snap has even made its way into popular media, featuring prominently in 1961 film West Side Story and in Avenger movies (2018, 2019)." ...they missed Night at the Museum), but I am totally waiting for a comprehensive takedown of the killing half of everyone thing to be published in a legit journal.
x5 I appreciate the colour coding of the stones.

Probably something to do with Yelena Belova.
