Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Source-wise the name Star Lord has 2 origins. The first one is it came from the Master of the Sun, a mystical deity who saw something in Quill and chose him as its successor granting him the title of Star Lord making him a master of the stars. Also where he got his element gun, making him master of the elements.
The 2nd origin is it stems from his Spartoi heritage. Star Lord is the term referred to prince of the Spartax and thus his name refers to his royal bloodline.
The recent game gave a new origin to the name. There the name comes from Quill's favorite band when he was a child, an 80's rock metal band called Starlord. So Quill decided to name himself that, even commissioning a jacket with the name Star Lord emblazoned on the back.
In the movie's case, Star Lord comes from a nickname his mother used to call him by.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."That game origin is pretty neat actually.
Its not as impressive as being given it by the Master of the Sun or by alien royalty tradition, but its something very personal to Quill
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI guess part of the in-universe mockery in the game is precisely because it comes off as childish. It is childish after all — it's something a kid came up with to cope with the whole "aliens murdered my mom and kidnapped me" thing.
It's kind of like how Batman's shtick is pretty childish when you think about it. Except in-universe people don't mock him for it due to a) not knowing the whole tragic backstory, b) knowing the whole tragic backstory and not being jerks (because mocking a guy's grief over his murdered parents is really shitty), and/or c) being too terrified of the guy in the batsuit who is beating the crap out of them.
Peter Quill just has the bad luck of being surrounded by people who are all varying degrees of jerk.

Disgusted, but not surprised
Forget it, it was something unrelated.
I guess it stems from the fact Quill himself doesn't exactly command respect.
A contrast to say this scene in Earth's Mightiest Heroes where Rocket of all characters seriously says "He's the Star Lord, respect him." Here Quill carries himself with a lot of dignity and commands everyone's respect as the unquestioned leader they all defer too.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."It helps that in that continuity Peter dresses more like a professional than a Han Solo ripoff and carries himself more like a professional.
Peter gets treated like a child in part because he looks and acts like one.
And the sad thing is that it makes sense that he'd be childish in the MCU and in the game. In both his childhood was interrupted in pretty traumatic fashion — kidnapped by space pirates who threatened to eat him (joking or not) right after his mom died of a brain tumor in the MCU, and having his mom be killed by the Chitauri who later kidnapped him.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThough Game-Quill does try to be the leader. He gives command to the team, he makes sure to keep their morale up and everyone happy, and whenever someone is arguing with the other he always acts as the mediator never taking a side unless someone does something really wrong.
Sure he's not a perfect leader having problems with confrontation, but he does improve over time and by the end of the game he becomes comfortable enough to pull rank and directly command his team earning their respect. At one point Rocket was about to abandon the team but Quill pulled his gun out and ordered him to stay, with Rocket praising Quill for finally having some stones.
He ends the game really coming into as the true leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. At that point the only cause for concern is for the team to find someone actually good with money because no one is capable enough to handle their finances.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."The game is in large part about Peter growing up and stepping up as both a leader and as a surrogate dad for Nikki.
That's what makes his rejection of The Promise so poignant. Killing the illusion of his mother is in part Peter giving up on his wish to go back to his childhood.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIts amusing to realize that the Guardians perpetual poverty most likely stems from the fact no one knows how to actually run a business or manage their money. Even Gamora the sane one prolly doesn't know anymore than they do because Thanos prolly didn't teach anything related to keeping track of money.
Their lack of professionalism makes it worse as while they are quite clearly competent, their horrible behavior pretty much drives off any potential client and further cements their reputation as a bunch of hapless nitwits.
Its like in Guardians 2 where Rocket in a moment of immense short-sightedness and greed, he proceeds to steal from their clients despite the job going well. Which really is a constant problem for Rocket, he makes horrible choices.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."![]()
That is why I appreciate the game does take elements from his Dn A era characterization with the game's overall setting being based off of the Annihilation event. Richard Rider is confirmed to exist and he has had a prior relationship with Gamora there even.
Hopefully movie-Rocket learned a lot from his tenure on the Avengers. Also if Adam Warlock does join in Guardians 3 then hopefully he contributes positively to the business.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."John Campea in trouble again? This delights me this fine Tuesday morning.
It's a good thing we live in a world of unverifiable and untrustworthy media, where you can get away with as many 'leaks' as possible and they'll be people out there who just won't believe it. I salute those people, it's about time someone, be it in marketing or the general movie going public, stood up for the 'surprise factor' of a movie, even if they have to really psy op themselves.
Y'know, I think there should be questions asked about how tight security was on the set of No Way Home. Endgame was relatively kept under wraps during its promotional tour, even with the time travel stuff being figured out through leaks. NWH meanwhile is leaking like a sieve.

Okey Dokey! We have a new official still
of No Way Home:
I swear, we've been on this bridge scene for so long, I expect this to be the actual debut of Deadpool.

I mean its a callsign and its a big universe, I'm not sure why people have such a hard time calling him by his codename.
Well, everyone covered the reasons before I even had a chance to say anything, but it should be pointed out that Korath did unironically call him Starlord near the end of the movie.
One Strip! One Strip!I'm shocked that there are so many leaks about Spider-Man lately. None of the other Marvel movies like Eternals and Shang-Chi had any leaks when they were coming out. So, what made Spider-Man much easier to leak into? Is it because it's partially owned by Sony and in the past, Sony was hacked into?
I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!

The "Lord" part makes it a tad pretentious in-universe.
