Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."More bad news for Black Panther 2:
Production got shut down due to Letitia Wright needing to recover from an on-set injury.

I do hope she’s okay, but my first thought was that she will look completely different after she recovers.
Not really, since it's the name of an actual animal.
White Tiger was also the first Latino super hero, so it would be a shame if they never did anything with Hector or his successors.
Already the idea of a Black Panther movie without Black Panther himself looks to be an Audience-Alienating Premise. I'm seeing more and more people who are becoming against killing the character off.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."I mean. It's not that different from producing Captain America 4 without Chris Evans. Someone else will take up the mantle. Presumably Shuri.
Shame about Letitia being an anti-vaxxer, though.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Thats not really the same situation though. That was after a lot of movies. Plenty of stuff where Steve was Cap and Sam as Falcon before the former retired and the latter succeeds.
It wouldn't really be the same effect with BP cause T'Challa and by extension Shuri only got one movie about them.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."It'd be like Chris Evans died before Winter Soldier, leaving the whole crew scrambling to think what to do and decide in a new lead, even if the king of Wakanda had more appearances in Avengers movies, honestly. This situation is very complicated.

Wake me up at your own risk. The central issue here is that Shuri is the most likely candidate to replace Black Panther but a lot of people (arguably rightfully) feel that an antivaxxer like Wright is undeserving of the mantle. Which in turn is the cover of a more core issue: that people are way too precious about recasting.
I'm not even talking about T'Challa in this case, I'm talking about Shuri. A sizeable number of the people pissed at how we're stuck with Wright also wring their wrists at how we're stuck with Wright. And not in the sense of begrudging acceptance of corporate bureaucracy, but in the sense that simply dumping her for another actress is just not an option for some reason.
Like I've legit seen people suggest the Batwoman route, i.e. having Shuri eat a shit-load of explosives to the face so that a recasting could be in-universe justified as Shuri being permanently disfigured.
The problem with recasting Shuri is that it would make Marvel/Disney look like complete hypocrites in the eyes of many. And for good reason: if they're willing to just recast Shuri on a whim, why can't they do the same for T'Challa? It would just add fuel to the fire.
Recasting an actress for toxic views and an actor because he died are entirely different hills to climb.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."The MCU's central star up until incredibly recently was a convicted felon. Booting Wright because some fans are upset about her is simply not going to happen.
The average MCU ticket buyer likely has no idea what Wright's views on vaccinations are, and just as likely wouldn't care enough to call for her to be fired.

That's kind of what I mean. I'm willing to bet there will be a lot of outcry from people who think it's stupid for Marvel to recast a character for what amounts to a somewhat minor reason, while deciding to kill off another because his actor died IRL, despite him being the entire reason why the franchise itself exists.
That being said, spreading misinformation about vaccines is bad, and I don't condone Wright's behavior. Just want to make that clear.

"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."I think if someone equates these two they must have a few screws loose and I'd be happy ignoring their opinions.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."![]()
I think it's less about screws being loose, and more that T'Challa really resonates with a lot of people, and they think it's unfair that having someone like him being killed off and never used again to supposedly respect his legacy seems unfair to them.
Of course, recasting the character can be something to remedy that. But...it just wouldn't be the same without Chadwick, would it?
