Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Adding to that, it especially wasn't anything resembling mockery.
Pretty much any rumors about MOM that involves the X-Men, the Fox continuity, etc are almost assuredly false, but I don't think people learned their lesson from Wandavision yet so the rumormongering persists.

It's not mocking people though. Like that's the most maddening part of the whole thing, how bloody personally people took it. People legit convinced themselves that all roads had to lead to Rome when Marvel both never intended on making him Fox Peter and were under no obligation to. And it's not like they can't go back and bring Fox Peter later anyway, ATJ being busy as fucking Kraven might actually make Peters a likelier pick.
So yeah, get bamboozled. Sorry.
Hey guys, did you hear the latest rumor? MoM will feature a battle royale between the Galactus cloud from Rise of the Silver Surfer, Into the Spider-verse's Miles Morales, the original 616 Sentry (and it's canon to the comics!), and my OC Irony Man who has limitless powers but doesn't use them because he's only fighting crime ironically. This is all a real, true insider scoop!
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.OK cmon guys, “heh, bo-ner” is a dick joke. I agree the fandom should not have taken it so personally, but they are unambiguously making a statement that his name sounds like penis to the point that said character chuckles at it.
I just saw Last Night in Soho so my brain interpreted this as Anya Taylor-Joy for a hot second. (Bring back a less racist version of her Magik!!!)

Yes, it's a dick joke, no, it's not a dick joke at anyone's expense. Also, to step further back, yes, the show wants the audience to wonder if maybe Fietro is a Quicksilver from an alternate universe, no, the show does not owe the audience that specific explanation. Equally maddening was the mind pretzels people bent themselves into reshape the whole scenario into something it wasn't every step of the way through it.
Also yes I recognized the "ATJ" shared acronym, yes it does mess me up too, and yes please give me Taylor-Joy back as not racist Magik.
Consequently, Variant Peter Quill is her heroic plumber boyfriend.

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonThe Time Variance Authority must have their head spinning. Assuming that Kang gives a shit.
Speaking of the TVA, I'm genuinely surprised that this Miss Minutes Twitter account
is continuing to make tweets and jokes post-Loki. Still can't tell if it's a legit account, or if some guy made it up and has been rolling with it ever since. Regardless, seems that they had fun with Halloween.
Since we've kinda forgotten about it, happy fifth anniversary to the release of Doctor Strange.
Okey Dokey!According to the Hollywood Reporter
, Eternals has been blocked in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait. Local censors has request some edits to Disney, which the company refused to make. It's speculated to be due to clear references to same-sex relationships, which are still considered illegal in those regions.
However, the United Arab Emirates still list the film as "coming soon".
Eeeeeeesh. Didn't know about Pratt's Instagram follows that were mentioned a few pages back. That's... not good. Not just because they're conservative but you have to be profoundly stupid to think Praeger U is... anything but idiocy regardless of your political views.

I don't even think they intended for people to literally think this was an AU Quicksilver. They just wanted people to see him and go, "That... that's not right...." Evan Peters showing up claiming to be Quicksilver is meant to be unsettling in a very meta way.
If they just cast some rando to play Fake Quicksilver, then the effect wouldn't quite work. You could legit argue that he'd just been recast. That we're supposed to think that he's the same guy, just like how we're supposed to think Don Cheadle and Terrence Howard are the same guy. And Wanda could even say, "He doesn't look like I remember him," but that just sounds like a funny joke about the recasting.
It's hard to convey that Quicksilver is being played by a new actor, but SHOULD NOT be being played by this new actor. That the new actor's presence is in some way wrong, on a guttural level, even while he's totally playing the character like it's no big deal. To let the audience feel as freaked out by him being here despite him not explicitly doing anything wrong as Wanda feels.
Casting the wrong Quicksilver was a brilliant way to achieve that effect. From the moment he appears, he's playing the role just fine, but you immediately know, instinctively, that he should not be here. Not just the character but the actor himself. His presence is wrong in a way that no dialogue or emoting could convey.
Unfortunately, the theorycrafters were too busy asking "What does it mean FOR THE LORE?!" to pay attention to what it means for the story being told.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. This movie (Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness) seems like it's shaping up to be a disappointment and not for the best reasons. It has a lot of expectations put on it that don't have much basis in fact or even to do with how the movie is going to work as a story and even if it's a acceptable enough movie, those thwarted expectations are probably going to lead to some sort of backlash.
Ah, well. What you gonna do.
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.Again, and I'd like to start off by stressing that I agree that the ultimate reveal wasn't a Take That! at anyone and people took it way too personally, still kind of Marvel's fault.
With them emphasizing that the TV shows are going to actually be essential viewing this time around and Marvel outright saying that the next place we were going to see Wanda was a movie called Multiverse of Madness, casting Evan Peters as Quicksilver was only ever going to get people suspecting.
And I disagree with the idea that you could only ever have sold the "is it actually Pietro" question by doing this. Recasting him with anyone else could have worked by just having the actor act like Pietro. One central premise of the series is "we no longer know what Wanda is capable of" up to the point of creating a brand new Vision wholesale out of nothing. The idea of her stuffing Pietro's soul in a different body is entirely plausible, casting Peters does not keep the question intact, it creates the alternate question "is that Peter Maximoff instead of Pietro".
Ultimately the biggest thing they could have done to help it was just take the punchline out. Like, it's not funny. There isn't a single thing to it that makes it funny beyond fifth grade "teehee, boner is an inherently funny word", and Ralph making that joke despite it being his own name just... drains everything out of it. And that's the last we see of him, so the thing that sticks in an audience's mind is "huh, that was a lot of build up for a joke that wasn't even funny". Alternatively, if they'd actually done something funny with it? Whole other ballgame.
I don't think Marvel could have possibly accounted for how obsessively theorizing the internet would be with WV. Like... that was genuine insanity.
Only if by "the way they did it" means "they used exactly the same dialogue and precise story beats." I don't think there's anything unworkable about bringing him back, but I do agree it would be worse.

"Dick joke"? It wasn't really a joke.
