Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

They'd have to introduce The One Above All before that, and maybe even the Living Tribunal before that

The council of Kangs is just a misdirect. It turns out that it's actually just an infinite number of Banner alt personalities from across the multiverse that'll be the real threat.

Would it really make sense to introduce split personalities to Bruce at this point? I mean, outside of Hulk himself, there hasn't exactly been any sign of them existing in the MCU.

Granted that can be blamed on the fact Hulk himself barely gets any actual focus.

Poor guy is a very supporting character.

[up][up] And that can be blamed on copyright issues. Since Universal co-owns the Hulk and his characters, he can't have any solo movies.

Makes me wonder where all these World War Hulk rumors are coming from.

[up][up] To be clear the rights don't also include TV rights right?

Cause ya know the She-Hulk show.

[up][up] Yeah, I think the TV rights are Marvel exclusive.

Makes me wonder what kinda show Bruce would get were he not part of She-Hulk...

I imagine a weekly Hulk show would be very expensive, even more so than a She-Hulk show. The recent Marvel shows have sometimes shown that they have to play it safe for budget, such as Loki having to set most of itself in an office and cutting out alien characters. A show with regular appearances from an all CGI character smashing sets would be vastly more of a challenge. You can't just spray paint a bodybuilder green anymore. tongue

[up] I dunno. The fact that WandaVision went all-out with its sitcom homages to the point of duplicating the old way of making the special effects (in spite of being harder and more expensive to do so) makes me feel like they could pull off more expensive shows.

Also, considering Abomination is set to appear in She-Hulk, chances are there's going to be a lot of CGI in that show...

(in spite of being harder and more expensive to do so)

Don't know about that, chief. The deliberately hokey effects in the earlier episodes of Wandavision were definitely harder to pull off live for a crew unaccostumed to using them, but they were without a doubt much cheaper.

I think what convinces me more that they could do a Hulk tv show would be Loki, which has a lot of heavy-duty CGI.

In either case, a She-Hulk fits the serialized format better. In the topic of villains in fact, aside from Titania and Absorbing Man as the semi-typical foes, I'd really want her to face Roxxon and its CEO Darius Agger (the minotaur).

Loki had to use its CGI strategically. I recall Honest Trailers pointing out of its most common tactics was having a Big Extravagant Location Shot, then cutting in to the characters talking in an office or a tent. Casting an illusion, one might say.

[up][up] Eh, for the earlier episodes they went through the trouble of finding and refurbishing period-accurate cameras and set lighting and fixtures to get everything just right. Also the metal plates on Vision's head were entirely CGI, meaning even in the earliest episodes Vision's head is being constantly mocapped.

So, like, definitely still cheaper relatively, but the idea that Wandavision was a No Budget easy fill-in doesn't hold water.

[up][up] Well, I didn't say that either. I'm just pretty certain that while more difficult, it turned out cheaper than say, the Alioth sequence in Loki.

Man its such a damn shame Hulk can't ever get his own movie.

I mean we still got the animated movie but damn imagine how we could have retold this story with a wider audience and bigger budget.

Not even in What If did Bruce get a major role. What a shame.

In other news, apparently Robert Downey Jr was approached for the role of Doctor Doom during Marvel's early days.

What a strange timeline that would've been...

I think Maestro would be a perfect post-Kang, pre-Secret Wars Avengers villain.

The Leader + a Hulk tier heavy hitter would be nice for a Hulk solo film.

Huh looking back you can really tell Hulk was kept on the sidelines by virtue of the few only Hulk-related characters we have had their relationships with him de-emphasized.

Ross came back when Bruce left the planet and became a general obstructive government official with nary a mention of his hatred of Bruce while Kori and Miek his Warbound became Thor’s friends.

Hell, there were several points where Loki had obvious green-screens. Compared to WandaVision where there were certain shots I had no idea were green-screened until I saw the behind-the-scenes footage.

So here’s an interesting take on who was responsible for the Snap from the Captain Marvel sequel’s director, Nia DaCosta: Steve was responsible for prioritizing keeping Vision alive over the universe. What do you guys think about that?
