Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Aw, snap! Colin from Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is Adam Warlock? Read he was surreal in that one. Oh, and he was in Midsommar alongside Florence Pugh. Cool!

[up]I note he does have a tendency to play obnoxious types (add Maze Runner and that last Narnia movie onto that pile), for better or for worse.

Interesting considering Adam is a philosopher-hero type character. That classy warrior poet and all that stuff, prolly the most intelligent character added to the team.

Which is gonna be very curious since the ending of Guardians 2 implies he’ll be newly born in 3.

And his actor is 28 while most of the Guardians cast are in their 40s.

[up][up] Don't forget that we got a 5 year time skip. Maybe he got a special learning bed like in The Venture Bros.

[up] Perhaps New Guardians of the Galaxy with a sub for Gunn?

Could Adam Warlock fill a similar niche to Vision for the Guardians, I wonder?

[up] Maybe? Haven't read any of his stuff to say for sure. Only know he was in an episode of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Speaking of, if the current Guardians are retiring to make space for a new team, can we also get Quasar? wink

I know literally nothing about Warlock from the comics, except that apparently he had a very close connection with the Soul Gem during the Infinity War / Guantlet comics. Obviously, that's going to have to change...

It would be a massive contrast.

The Guardians are an extremely crude group in general with the most civilized member formally being Gamora and which is now Mantis due to her politeness.

Quill, Rocket, Drax, Nebula, and even Groot and Gamora are all rather savage individuals to varying degrees of boorishness, at minimum being some kind of boisterous lughead.

So if Adam maintains his philosopher-hero character the interactions are gonna be a sight to see. Vision is a pretty good comparison, he has a similar temperament to Adam.

I'm curious, was Adam Warlock British in the comics?

Well, it makes sense to make him British since most of the Sovereigns with speaking parts in Vol. 2 were Brits.

I just hope the third Guardians movie doesn't have Gamora fall in love with Adam and the entire movie is about Quill trying to win her back or some bullshit.

Although seeing that word of mouth says the third Guardians movie is more focused on Gamora and Nebula, I'm not too worried about that.

[up][up] I think there's a fair chance Quill's arc in the film is to let Gamora go, as this Gamora will never be exactly like his Gamora.

I would be amused if Quill gets jealous of Adam only for him to be a perfectly nice gentleman and he actually helps Quill get over her and move on with his life.

Although seeing that word of mouth says the third Guardians movie is more focused on Gamora and Nebula, I'm not too worried about that.

Which would make sense. Nebula needs to figure out her relationship with this Gamora knowing that she hasn't gone through the experiences the other Gamora went through in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films.

My hopes are for Quill to accept that his Gamora is gone, the new Gamora isn't into him, and go back to being an intergalactic whore chasing short flings instead of a "one and only".

My hope is that Nebula will find that nice hat Kraglin suggested she get, and rock it for the rest of the film. And maybe find a love of her own.

...What? Is it wrong that I want Nebula to find someone she can be happy with after years of abuse and tragedy?

Heh. So if I had the skill to rescore the entire final battle of Avengers: Endgame to this song:

....would you all call me a visionary, a man in need of getting his ass kicked....or both?[lol]

I actually even know exactly what part I'd synch to Carol's arrival too, but you'd have to watch the episode of Macross Frontier this song plays in to figure it out.

I'm still curious what they're going to do with Adam.

Since it's obviously too late to adapt his archenemy-ship with Thanos, the only thing that's really left is to do Magus. Which, if we're already doing "evil future bad guy" stuff, I'd kind of prefer Iron Lad and his connection with Kang for that.

Unless they're literally just going to adapt him as a Romantic False Lead, which... ugh. I hope not.

I suppose all we can do is wait to see what they've got planned.

Could have Adam oppose Kang too. Thanos had a multitude of personal enmities in the MCU (more obviously Gamora, Nebula, Quill, Thor and a bit of a Worthy Opponent thing going on with Stark) so Kang might as well follow suit and have personal beef with a multitude of people to be involved in the inevitable showdown with him.

Maybe the creation of Adam Warlock is a fixed point in the timelines that lead to Kang the Conqueror. The ultimate lifeform leads to the ultimate conqueror of lifeforms.

Maybe he'll be the Hero Antagonist of the movie, someone who generally thinks the Guardians have done the Sovereign wrong and need to be brought to justice, but holds no malice towards them, and is generally civil and polite in their presence. And over the film, his morals begin to clash with Ayesha's and he begins to question what he's actually fighting for before he makes a proper Heel–Face Turn.

It could serve as a nice way to contrast from Ronan and Ego, who were just vile pricks through and through.

I thought we heard a while back that Guardians 3 would focus on Rocket meeting his wife?
