Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Thor kinda said the same thing in the first movie didn't he?
And the Ancient One kinda followed that idea when she pointed out that magic was manipulating the source code of the universe. She also had that debate on timelines with Bruce.
I think it's still kinda there, but they're downplaying since they are embracing the comic book mentality more openly. Which makes sense. Science is about understanding the universe, and magic is a part of that universe.
One Strip! One Strip!Even in Ragnarok, which revolved around an ancient prophecy, the mooks were undead warriors animated by a death goddess, and Thor was quite insistent about being the god of thunder, still had a handful of "are we sure this is magic?" moments. That's not a complaint—one of my favorite little details was about how Thor was easily able to keep up with Banner's technobabble, because Asgard is an advanced spacefaring civilization and he understands that stuff.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.Heh I was listening to the Metal Gear Rising soundtrack and I now have this fun idea of Armor Wars being Rhodey going against an epic conspiracy of distinctly cyborg or in this case power armored lunatics like Raiden did.
And its pretty fitting in since Rhodey is a soldier and has had a hand in the military/industrial complex.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."This means a case of The Other Darrin where you find a new actor to replace the one who has left or is already dead.
It’s rare that super speed is depicted as slightly awkward and out of control like someone in a full out sprint often looks
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAs far as how Eternals will do, it depends on the competition involved or the box office climate. On one hand, they're extremely obscure to many comic fans and casual audiences, not to mention that they haven't appeared much in other Marvel titles, note by contrast, the Guardians of the Galaxy had made some appearances in animation and video games while Marvel was working on their film as early as 2009, so they were already built up in preparation for their cinematic debut, not to mention having a comic series that last two years and appearances in Avengers Assembled and Marvel NOW!. Even Shang-Chi had slightly more relevance than the Eternals as he was in some Marvel video games and headlined his own comic title Master of Kung Fu which lasted for two decades as well as some appearances in noteworthy comic book storylines such as Shadowland and Infinity, plus his own film was in the works since The '80s and almost appeared in The Avengers (2012).
A comicbook.com article named four factors that could make or break the film's success at the box office: 1. Lack of recognition and appeal from the mainstream, 2. Its theatre-level experience being not as high as other blockbusters of 2021, 3. The uptick in COVID cases and 4. Zhao not being a big enough name for audiences. Of course, considering that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings did better than expected at the domestic box office, Eternals might have similar success. Though Shang-Chi had the benefit of being targeted towards one demographic (Asian-Americans, especially Chinese people) and a favorable Labor Day weekend. By contrast, Eternals has to appeal to multiple demographic groups and doesn't have a specific holiday to fall back on, so while it will make it's money back how well it will perform at the box office depends on its performance during or after the opening weekend.

My worry about Eternals outside of the lack of recognition is that it's going to try to be both a comic book movie and an Oscar Bait arthouse film of sorts, and ultimately succeed in being neither.
Also, trying to focus on a grand total of ten different main characters with zero information about any of them given to us beforehand sounds like quite a challenge.

"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."If Brad Pitt exists in the MCU, did Brangelina also happen in the MCU? Just saying because the coroner on the Skrull autopsy in Captain Marvel name-drops Pitt in his discussion with Talos.
Okey Dokey!I’m not really worried about Eternals except in the sense of whether I personally will enjoy it

My sentiments exactly. Say what you will about Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, that film had a clear audience in mind and it was a superhero Wuxia martial arts film that can be easily understood by audiences. Plus, Destin Daniel Cretton has made a few successful films under his belt such as Short Term 12 and Just Mercy. Eternals does not have those things.

I remember when watching press junkets for Bohemian Rhapsody how Joseph Mazzello pointed out how he and John Deacon look exactly alike. So Identical Stranger existing in the MCU doesn't seem that far-fetched.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."I feel like we've had this conversation before in this very thread, so I'm just going to say what I said last time the 'Eternals' cast size came up
:
Maybe it will wind up overstuffed or some characters will be sidelined, but a large cast is not a damning indicator by itself. It's all in the writing.
Now, to point out that Chloe Zhao, who is known for intimate films with smaller casts, hasn't directed such a large and flashy ensemble film before would be more fair.

That’s be an new direction, considering the WCA in the comics have typically been based in So Cal. I recall there was a period where Daredevil was based in San Francisco but he went back to Hell’s Kitchen eventually.
