Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Maybe Mordo will also take the role of further manipulating / corrupting Wanda.

How liked is Mordo?

Honestly I never gave him much thought because he's a human and I want Strange combating his eldritch magical threats like Dormammu more than just some human wizard.

I was hoping for someone like Nightmare or since Wanda is in it elder God Chthon.

Let's go big.

Mordo is Stephen Strange's arch-nemesis in the comics. Like, straight-up. Stephen has bigger villains, but they tend to be too big for him to fight directly, like Dormammu. Baron Mordo is Strange's Green Goblin, his Joker. He's a BIG fucking deal.

Yeah, Mordo is confirmed returning for Strange 2 and the official synopsis is that Strange's confrontation with a "Friend-turned-enemy" (Mordo) will lead to Strange unleashing some kind of evil, which presumably will then lead into the actual multiverse stuff.

Isn't Dormammu his Arch-Enemy. Mordo was back in the day but good old Dorm has overshadowed him.

Well, that's been my impression from reading the Silver Age comics, I'm not caught up to modern stuff.

Yeah during that era Mordo was indeed Stranges archfoe

But over the years, Dormammu has taken that title instead.

On the subject of Multiverse of Madness, I find that people tend to ignore the giant Mordo in the room.

The first Doctor Strange movie basically ends with it standing on top of a mountain and shouting that Mordo will be the villain in the sequel to the entire world, and yet it's rarely actually discussed.

Given this, it's probably wise to especially doubt any Mo M rumor that doesn't leave a place for Mordo.

Given Mordo's whole crusade is about taking magic from those he thinks are undeserving of it, I think that it would make sense for Strange to get Wanda involved on the grounds that she's dealt with such a person herself (in Agatha Harkness).

Yeah but Dormmamu is his main one.

Which even the page says.

I'm guessing the plot is going to be Mordo releasing Nightmare, who is the real main villain, and Stephen teams up with Wanda to fight them.

Now that I think about it, Wanda is exactly the type of person Mordo would go after if he learned about what she did in Westview.

Was Mordo also a former friend of Strange's in the comics?

This is it exactly. Mordo likely knows how dangerous Wanda is, and probably knows about the legend of the Scarlet Witch. So he's probably going to do everything in his power to end her, by any means necessary.

[up][up]No, in the comics he was basically evil from the start.

I could see Wanda entering the story because Strange turns to her for help dealing with Mordo, needing the skillset of a sorcerer with training different from the Masters of the Mystic Arts that trained Mordo.

Wanda might be an antagonist to Doctor Strange as the big threat to the Multiverse. Alternatively, if she is not a villain then Nightmare or Shuma-Gorath could be the other Big Bads aside from Mordo given that the former is a Fear Lord and the latter is a Lovecraftian abomination, both of whom fit the horror movie tone of Multiverse of Madness.

I think they could also do something with some of Strange's other family members.

Seconding that a hero can have multiple archenemies. Green Goblin appearing in a film universe doesn't mean that universe is never ever going to use Doc Ock. Reverse Flash reppearing in a film universe doesn't mean that series is never going to use Captain Cold. Etc.

Mordo is, absolutely, one of Strange's archnemeses, and more importantly the first film actively sets him up as an antagonist. The OP is right that people are ignoring the fact that Mordo is a big elephant in the room in terms of things that are almost certainly going to be in the movie.

It's another thing that doesn't really work about these theories - they assume Strange's actual circle of characters are going to be insignificant in comparison to characters from other series.

What other major Strange characters could be brought in?

Isn't Clea his primary love-interest?

One could say the first Doctor Strange is as much about Strange's origins as it is about setting up Mordo's villainy.

Did no one remember Doctor Strange's post-credit scene of Mordo stealing the one guy's power that allowed him to walk again? He explicitly said he felt the world has too many sorcerers. And now that the Scarlet Witch has emerged...
