Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Well TBF it’s not like the Gods are fucking morons like the majority of the human race.

Sure Odin’s not infallible but he’s better than most.

I believe in my heart that Thor has smoked the reefer before. It would have been when Beast was on the team and Thor had no idea what it was he smoked but had a very mellow time.

Re: Gorr. He was full of shit anyway. He constantly moved the goalposts. Either gods didn't do enough or they did too much and kept mortals from realizing their potential.

Meanwhile, he never got around to killing the asshole Shi'ar gods despite being at his shit for decades.

[up][up]Odin's a lot worse in the comics than in the MCU. And he's still better than some gods from other pantheons, which says a lot about how bad gods are in the Marvel verse.

[up]Gorr was pretty much Villain Has a Point. What he said wasn't wrong per se, but he was still a hypocritical and inconsistent piece of shit.

[up][up][up] What’s worse is that what drove him to become evil, the slaughter of his people wasn’t even their fault.

They wanted to help but they were too busy fending off Knull and the Uni-Power wanted to empower him but Knull stopped him too.

Everything about Gorr’s existence was a complete waste of time tragically.

Either way Thor has a problem of having really low self-esteem.

He ties his entire self-worth to that damn hammer and he genuinely believes the words of a psychopathic mass-murderer to such a degree that it accepts his entire worldview.

It’s really sad.

It's implied that Thor was already having doubts about the legitimacy of the gods' authority over mortals and whether mortals really needed them.

And it wasn't just because Gorr said it. It was because another person with the knowledge of the Watcher himself confirmed it.

Even after he got over all of that, Thor still has self-esteem issues. Now he wishes he could stop being the All-Father. And this is once again reflected by Mjolnir — he has trouble lifting it, but anyone else can lift it easily.

Interesting note: Eternals got a 18+ (i.e a r-rating) rating in Russia.

This is presumablby due the featuring of homosexuality in the film (Russia having infamous laws against "homosexual propaganda"). So it's actually a good sign that it might actually feature some kind of overt homosexuality rather than Disney's usual spineless stuff.

[up][up][up] It’s not even the same hammer, it’s a brand new one he had commissioned by the dwarves.

And really what point is it even trying to prove? Thor having self-esteem issues means that even serial killers and rapists are more worthy than him?

Cause I have to say it sounds like the hammers a douche more than anything.

No the point is that the hammer is really just responding to what Thor believes. In a way, it is giving him what he wants. The downside of an Empathic Weapon.

I thought it was Mjolnir

Jane hurled it into the sun and Thor hung on a world tree sticking out of the sun until Mjolnir reforged and came back mjolnier than ever

So it was reforged. I thought he just made a new one.

[up][up] So Thor really needs to get over himself then.

Well, yeah.

MCU Thor has this same issue of needing to get over his own personal demons before he can kick ass with his godly powers.

I just hope Fat Thor is history in any future films. It was funny for Endgame, but I'm sure it will be played out very soon.

If God of War Ragnarök can do Fat Thor with respect then I don't see why can't they do it with respect in future films (although Thor is a villain there). If I remember correctly though leaked set pictures have shown Hemsworth ripped again.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Battle Fat Thor is the best he's EVER looked, with the armor and braided beard. It was the first time I looked at MCU Thor and saw "Thor, the Norse God", not "Thor, the Marvel Comics Superhero".

I half-expect Love and Thunder opening with a Training Montage of Thor losing weight while with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

I'm kind of curious as to what the Guardians will do in Love and Thunder before they take a backseat. Are they gonna play Led Zeppelin and kick some ass? Are Thor and Star-Lord gonna play more Misery Poker? Is Nebula going to find a nice hat to wear like Kraglin suggested?

On the subject of "overt homosexuality" in Eternals, any positive depictions of homosexuality in media aimed at children are illegal in Russia. I.e. Marvel had to cut Russo's line where he mentioned his "partner" to avoid R-rating (18+) for Endgame, and before that Beauty and the Beast where Disney refused to cut anything got the 16+ rating.

There are no restrictions in media aimed at grown-ups (18+). Also, it is not illegal to be gay, and technically the constitution guarantees equal rights to them (except gay marriages), but practically it is very hard to be openly proud about it.

Before you call Russia a den of evil, abortions are covered by state insurance (are free), and are accepted by the vast majority to be the indeniable women's right here. So yeah, different societies evolve differently.

...That's not "different cultures have different values", that's Russia being shittier than America at one thing and America being shittier at another thing. And that's not an equalizer, that's two sides being shit in different ways.

But I digress.

I'm also hopeful that the Russia R18+ rating means Eternals actually does something better and meatier than the blatant tokenizing that has become part and parcel for "woke" Disney. I want to hope Zhao being given such creative control means she doesn't fall to the same traps, I want to hope the recent promotion of Victoria Alonso (a lesbian woman) means better things on the Marvel side, and I want to believe between Wiccan and Speed and America Chavez that the topic's now inevitable for them. But we'll have to see, for better and for worse.
