Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Aside from that, all I'm seeing on his Twitter right now is that he lost an Airpod.
Edit: No wait, it seems like he was able to find it after all. False alarm!
Also, what do you mean by "home-grown"?

Disgusted, but not surprisedWhether it's true or false, I'd like to be able to talk about it somewhere instead of keeping it all in my head like I usually do. Part of the reason I started talking in this forum is because I like MCU stuff and was getting frustrated I didn't have anyone to talk to about it.
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."Okay, here’s what happened.
Slate recently published an article about the misogynistic and racist MRAsians movement.
Several Asian-American podcasters and media writers shared the article, and claimed Simu Liu tended to be friendly with MRAsian users and at times namesearch people complaining about his proximity to them so his fans would yell at them.
When that behavior got attention today, Liu made some attempts to brush off the controversy, first with vague apologies then trying to deflect to unrelated Air Pod humor, but that failed to brush off the outrage, which then escalated into some people digging up his old Reddit account where he made extremely obtuse claims of “understanding pedophilia” in the sense of a mental illness and compared it to being irrevocably gay.
So that’s basically what’s the talk of the town right now.

Nah, if Chris Pratt still has a job I don’t see Liu going. Honestly, aside from the Reddit post most of this stuff with Liu was already old news, at least in the circles I’ve frequented for the past few years. Did dampen my interest in seeing Shang-Chi, I admit.

“Namesearching” in a nutshell.
Some random user on the Internet with two followers: “I don’t like big celeb, they’re smelly.”
Big Celeb with more money than Montana and 5 million followers: “I feel like searching for random haters today.” *searches their name* “Hey, that dude with 2 followers thinks I’m smelly!” *types back* “Your mom’s smelly!”
5 million followers: “We must defend our helpless idol!” *swarm random user’s account and send them insults, hate mail, death threats, etc*

I'd say Disney's behavior towards Gina Carano vs. Letitia Wright is more relevant here. Carano wasn't booted for any individual offending tweets, she was booted for a consistent and escalating social media presence that she was outright refusing to curtail. Meanwhile despite Wright straight-up proving herself to be and peddling anti-science garbage she promptly nuked her socials after her "first strike".
Here the most offending part is that whole awful subreddit post, and even then it's more caked in horrible ignorance and Unfortunate Implications than outright active malicious bigotry. An apology is required and should be pressed and squeezed out of him but so long as the apology's good and sincere I don't think there's anything else to drag out of him. As for the other stuff it kinda just comes off as him being an asshole with a Reddit account and I can't see anyone much less Disney caring unless he starts doing it now now that he's a Marvel mega-star.
I don't even think he can post on Reddit even if he wanted to - think he had to make a corporate burner for the Reddit AMA.
In fact I actually discovered something I think is important: the awful subreddit comment was posted July 2015. That predates both the November 2015 premiere of Blood and Water
(a series that he would win awards for) and the October 2016 premiere of Kim's Convenience. Which means when he posted this Simu Liu was still effectively just a "regular dude" trying to make it big in the industry. That's not to excuse him, that's just to recognize that he didn't have at the absolute least the weight of celebrity on his shoulders when he said that shit.
I mean, James Gunn made those really awful jokes in his forties, but matured to be a better man and was forgiven rather quickly. But I do agree that Liu probably should've known better.

Posting might be out the window, but is he allowed to delete old/burner accounts?

"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."Maybe I'm just really invested in this because the MCU has kind of become my comfort franchise to follow after I stopped following most individual content creators and the Slenderverse more-or-less died. I know Marvel probably won't last forever, but I still want to hold onto it for as long as I can. I know this situation is small in the grand scale of things, but I'm paranoid of a domino effect happening or something.
Does this make me a childish person?
"I'm Mr. Blue, woah-woah-ooh..."

While I have seen Liu's unpopularity in China, I think this particular controversy is home grown...
