Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Hipbone cutouts have their place (like on a monokini), but it's not really on a superhero costume.

Unless said superhero is bulletproof or something.

She apparently included them in the costume for the sole reason to make Clint carry stuff for her, or so she claimed.

It was a Shout-Out to one of Diana Rigg’s outfits on The Avengers (1960s). Then it evolved into a monster. tongue

Y'know, if Kate was going to be wearing a purple bodysuit with hip holes then she could have been wearing one of Hawkeye's classic costumes if he was going to go around in a shirt with an arrowhead on it, like a jerk

Hey, is Hawkeye wearing a hearing aid in his left ear?

I wouldn't be surprised if Clint communicates with Echo in ASL, probably when they first meet to develop a rapport.

I wonder if he got it from extensive use of the explosive arrows.

Possibly from a recent attack. We know deaf hero Echo is appearing so likely she’ll provide advice on acclimating to that.

Gonna assume that Laura will take a bit of an issue with the "ex-murderous edgy vigilante" part.

Social media has noticed a lack of Linda Cardellini in promo materials and cast lists. Do we know if she's appearing, will there just be a line about "sorry your mom couldn't make it, she's busy filming Dead to Me or something"?

It hasn't been confirmed that she is coming back, and at this point I don't expect to see her. Even Clint's phone conversation with her in the trailer seemed like a way of dealing with that.

Outside of his mental health, why would Laura care about his time as Ronin? He was a SHIELD Black Ops agent, then an Avenger. Both would have required him to kill people. And him killing a bunch of Yakuza doesn't seem to be something that she would draw the line at.

Catching wind of the “killing them even when they were on their knees begging for mercy” might feel like a red flag for her…

While there's other discussions to be had like mental health in law enforcers (which SHIELD nominally was, or something analogous to it) and are law enforcement deaths actually more justifiable than vigilante deaths and all his Endgame murderers were extrajudicial etc etc...

I think we are clearly supposed to read Endgame!Clint as a tad mad with grief.

Gosh I hated the hip holes so much, so glad to be rid of them. They just seemed to exist to show that Kate wasn't wearing underwear. Even if they did look iconic.

Ohhh, I'm excited for the hearing aid, on the condition something is actually done with it. Seeing some ASL would be worth while.

That was a pretty chipper trailer. Seems cute.

[up] And so were the people he targetted as Ronin. Yakuza and Neo-nazi are not people anyone would really mourn.

[up] True but how Rhodes and Nat discuss Barton's rampage, and how it's shown are two different things. He doesn't act like a guy who's gone over the edge, and once he rejoins the team its all basically dropped.

It's easy to let media like Goodfellas, The Sopranos, and any number of Yakuza-focused Japanese media paint our impression of organized crime as a bunch of glorified, loveable rogues. Like pirates.

But no. Speaking as somebody who lives in an area with a strong mafia presence, they're universally murderous, thieving, violent scumbags and the world would be better off if every single one of them dropped dead. Doesn't give you the legal right to go extrajudicially killing them for a number of reasons, but I can't say Clint's 5-year stint as The Punisher makes me think less of him, and given Kate Bishop's edgy getup I can't imagine she thinks less of him either.

Anyway, the trailer. It's looking nice. The whole "Christmas as a backdrop" thing combined with the dark visuals makes me think Die Hard but with arrows instead of bullets. I'm looking forward to this one.

And movies like Goodfellas especially showcases that the mob are nothing more than a bunch of greedy self-destructive pack of dumb motherfuckers.

Also if anyone’s curious what Kate’s hip holes look like.

Seriously, does anybody remember that Iron Man 3 is technically a Christmas movie?
