Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Was Gargan ever shown outside of the suit post-transformation? I think I missed that.
I think Elizabeth Olsen complaining about the amount of cleavage Wanda's Avenger uniform had counts. She had a fair amount of influence over the final Scarlet Witch costume in WandaVision, resulting in a much more stylish appearance.
So would Scarlett Johansson getting influence over Natasha's Black Widow uniform, which is honestly the best of Natasha's uniforms overall because it too doesn't show cleavage.
Okey Dokey!Blade Director Promises the Reboot Will Pay Respect to Wesley Snipes' Trilogy
.
Hope Snipes gets a cameo or something. That'd be cool to see.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonActually, yes he was. At the beginning of the Insidious Six arc (since they refused to use Sinister) of the Second season, when the members of the eponymous group (Scorpion, Doc Ock, Rhino, Shocker, Mysterio) are being broken out by the Chameleon, we see Gargan out of his suit before he puts it on, and he looks exactly as he did before his transformation.
One Strip! One Strip!@LMS ...This seems relatively inoffensive. You may proceed.
Anyway, Hurricane Ida has screwed with my classes at LSU (one of my teachers is in New Orleans right now...which is currently out of power so that may not be the best place to be) so I think I have enough free time to get back into the Netflix Marvel shows!
Last time I tried this, I stopped at Daredevil season 2, episode 2 and within the next two weeks, I should be done with that and...Iron Fist season 1.
A. Last time on Daredevil! Matt got shot in the head and tumbled out-of-sight while the camera lingered ominously, complete with scary violin strings, on the space where his body once occupied.
Now, if Foggy Nelson has to solve his friend's death with the help of newly-deceased ghost lawyer, Matthew Murdock...I wouldn't be averse to this turning into Ace Attorney and never looking back.
B. Iron Fist season 1. Yeah, I know when I finished Jessica Jones season 1 that I said I would skip this and go straight to Iron Fist season 2 because I heard the latter is much better but...well, let's say I had a change of philosophy. I blame this on Kingdom Hearts.
Go ahead and ask but I'll just summarize this change in a paragraph: every narrative deserves a chance to be looked straight in the eye, paid full attention, and judged clear of any preconceptions. Not to be looked up and put on a pedestal or looked down and have a grave already dug for it. Take it with a serious, objective gaze. (Yes, objective probably isn't the best word.)
Now, I've heard of plenty of complaints about it from people whose opinions I do trust: Danny being not very good or interesting, Joy Meachum or Coleen Wing being treated poorly, the bloody Hand, the whole unabashed, don't-try-to-even-think-about-it "Mighty Whitey" thing, it just being kind of a mess in general. I don't doubt those people are wrong for putting this season six feet under, honestly. But...I'm still willing to give this a serious chance, both because the aforementioned "viewing philosophy" and the fact that even those people have talked about good and interesting things the show has done like Harold Ward and the twisted implosion of his family. Besides, it'll be fun, for lack of a better word, to find what other things there are that nobody else talks about because they're not pedantic smartasses with too much free time on their hand and poor sleep cycles! Like how tearing away the index from a book can be the funniest goddamn thing you've seen in a while!
(Wait, that describes the internet in general, doesn't it?)
But, gott in Himmel, it's going to be really difficult to not think back to the graveyards, the things that ultimately killed it in the end. Ah well, that's a bridge to cross, plank by plank, for later.
P.S Not saying people can't having misgivings or go "this doesn't look like it's going to work" (and those people who had misgivings about the whole "mighty whitey" thing pretty much had a point about how the show wasn't likely to change those misgivings) but...it's always worth trying it anyway, even if it's just to be smug about how you were right to disdain this from the get-go. Hidden treasures and all that.

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position. As I said earlier, I think it's mostly fine once you get past how bad Danny's writing is in the first season, and that the fight scenes are unimpressive. Which sucks since he's the central protagonist and martial arts are a central premise, but at least they both get better once the show is not stuck under Buck's thumb. Everything else (the Meachums, Davos, Rand Enterprises, even the Hand to an extent) ranges from "acceptable" to "actually very good". I don't even think it's the worst of the Netflix seasons; Jessica Jones' second season is both an absolute trainwreck of a story and utterly boring on top of that, so it takes the (anti-)crown for me.
But yes, please do go into it as free of preconceptions as you can, and consider how you feel at the end.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! That amusing considering how acclaimed JJS 1 is.
Some shows really aren't mean to last multiple seasons.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I realized an interesting coincidence. For the next two weeks, I'll be watching shows that are pretty lambasted as being shitty in Asian representation, with The Hand being one of those prime examples as boring, flat, zombie ninjas that exist to get punched and do evil.
The angel on my shoulder whispers, "why don't you watch Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings, which just came out and sounds like it would pretty much a boon to Asian representation in the MCU, featuring a heroic new Asian Avenger that also shows that you can have Asian martial artists without falling into the hole of being a sterotype because a sterotype is about bad writing: being the role with no more flesh or depth to them, which good writing that humanizes and makes them entertaining can solve and thus slay many a stupid anti-AA Iron Fist kneejerk"? (Ain't that right, ~R. Bluefish?)
I tell that same angel, "...Shut up."
"What a sterling and well-thought response", the angel responds sarcastically.
I reach my arm over to my shoulder, pick the angel up by the wings, and toss him into a trashcan.
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.Speaking of Shang-Chi, so far it has broken a Labor Day box office record and has $146.2 million at the box office on a $150 million budget. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical about its possible success since the film was projected to have the lowest-grossing opening weekend of any MCU film aside from The Incredible Hulk and it might still have this dubious achievement. That said, the film does have a decent reception with critics and audiences especially the former, so it is certainly capable of making its money back. This might also cause Marvel to be more confident in keeping the intended release date for Eternals, though how it's going to perform with audiences remains to be seen.
However, I don't think Shang-Chi will do well with Mainland Chinese viewers. For starters, many don't like it for being a Western movie that plays fast and loose with their culture (in their opinion anyway). Not to mention that the Mandarin is the villain and he's considered to be a Yellow Peril stereotype, which won't go over well with the Chinese (even if some don't know his roots as an Expy of Fu Manchu). Furthermore, Simu Liu and Awkwafina are considered ugly by Chinese beauty standards for having squinty eyes (an offensive stereotype in China) and some asking why Tony Leung isn't Shang-Chi. Even if the film does get released in the Middle Kingdom, it's unlikely that it will perform well in that market much like Crazy Rich Asians. Also, Chinese moviegoers prefer locally made movies over Western imports and so they could easily just look for another martial arts film rather than just stick with a foreign one like Shang-Chi.

I never watched Inhumans.
Never got around to it. Probably never will.
I mean to eventually pick up the netflixes I missed and catch up on Cloak and Dagger and Runaways but not Inhumans.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI actually remember seeing fanart of cloak and dagger someone did (it was this
that made me check out the first episode, but I didn't continue with it

On an interesting note, according to Olga Kurylenko the Taskmaster suit was an absolute pain in the ass to wear and required the usage of multiple stunt doubles to get right.
So they may have fucked up the costume design all in the service of the reveal for the character.
Makes me wonder what other actors here experienced any difficulties with their costumes.
