Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Sorry for bringing up dumb stuff earlier guys. I do like the MCU but I'm evidently not a big enough fan of it to contribute much in the way of meaningful discussion here.

This info is probably irrelevant to the MCU but today is Zendaya's birthday and twitter is going crazy over Tom calling her "My MJ"

Bassam Tariq confirms he's directing Marvel Studios' Blade.

He's pretty stoked about it.

"I didn't think ['Blade'] was going to happen, just to be very honest," Tariq said. "I'm honored and it's a privilege, but I'm here in service of Stacy Osei-Kuffour, who is the incredible writer that is writing the film...She's just a phenomenal presence and a juggernaut in her own right. And for Mahershala [Ali]. For me, it's really just working in their service." He added, "[Marvel] takes big swings, you know?...I can't say anything about it, but I'm just so excited for what we're doing."

While he has to remain tight-lipped about what people can expect with Blade, he does want to stress that his superhero film will put character first.

"Character is very important for me. I don't think of genre, I think of character," he teased. "It's not so boxed in as people imagine it to be [working with Marvel Studios]. It's quite exciting. And I think the reality is there is no 'Blade' canon, you know? If you ever read the comics, they're always changing...Unfortunately, the [comic book series] never lasted that long."

I think a character-focused Blade is a smart move to distance itself from the original action-focused movies.

The legend has returned.

[up][up] Oh yeah he’s right, Blade does not get comics.

Like there was that announced series a couple years ago that would have introduced his daughter but that become vapor ware and was never released.

Which makes sense as Blade is a supporting character for Dracula in Tomb of Dracula.

There's a TV Guide Magazine write-up for the upcoming Hawkeye series, as a part of its physical Fall 2021 TV preview. Interesting take for the series it set around Christmas (while ironically released a day before Thanksgiving in the USA). https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9ienuca6wik71.png

Soooo, saw Shang Chi (it's been out for two days in France). Not gonna spoil anything, but.... I liked it. Definitely love this take on the Mandarin. A huge improvement over Iron Man 3; my only regret is that we could never get him fighting Iron Man.

We hadn't heard anything from it for like five years, so it make sense. Unfortunate though, especially since we seem to going in a direction of pushing up the younger heroes right now.

[up] Yeah, we're already getting Wiccan, Speed, Kid Loki, (probably) Eli Bradley, Kate Bishop, Kamala, and America.

I think the Power Pack can hold on a little longer.

Miles Morales whe-- (*is shot*)

If Peter's still in high-school then Miles can't be brought in yet.

He'd otherwise be redundant especially since Peter got some of Miles elements composited with himself like Ganke.

If Miles ever shows up, maybe Ganke could be reimagined to be more like comics!Ned?

Admittedly, I don't know much about comics!Ned other than he was brainwashed into being Hobgoblin, but it would still be a fun reversal of roles.

This is for any of you power pack fans, tough luck. tongue

I’m not all that disappointed, we’ve already gotten so many "Next Generation" cape-guys recently that the PPnote  would just end up lost in the crowd, plus they’re bound to cause Mood Whiplash with the rest of the Phase 4 lineup.

How likely is it that they'll have an older Miles as a bit of a role reversal?

I find it unlikely. Miles is an easy way to keep Spider-Man young, even when Peter Parker('s actor) gets older.
