Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I thought it was the opposite? I heard Bettany was excited to take on the role of Vision because it wasn't just him doing V.O. work for an easy paycheck anymore.
Although I can believe him not being pleased with the heavy make-up required for the role. I don't think I've heard any actor who's been pleased to go through that process.

Ultimate being masked for the whole film is something that is up to the person playing Doom rather than the studio themselves, necessarily. If they really want to commit to keeping him masked, they’ll cast someone who isn’t insistent on having their face visible and in marketing position as much as possible.
I imagine with whoever becomes Doom they go out of their way to grab him for whatever even if he's fully covered and masked up, mainly to have the actor still perform with their body and eyes. Spader, Brolin, and Ruffalo are all actively involved in filming despite playing animated characters because some part of their physicality is still being translated to the final product - the whole reason Ultron was redesigned with a face was so that they could take more advantage of Spader's facial performance.
Only way I see them play the "just VA in post" card is if he's physically made so daunting that they need a body double like with Darth Vader, which I doubt they'll do.

Well that's kind of backwards, they didn't need a body double for Vader, they needed a voice double. Lucas just thought Prowse's voice was too soft and posh for Vader, so he got someone else.
For Doom, he has taken his mask off plenty of times in the comics, so it just comes down to the specific story they're trying to tell.
Kang the Conqueror is another famously always masked character and Marvel didn't hold to that, either.
Simu Liu will be doing a Reddit Ask Me Anything later today
, if anyone is interested.

Granted, the version of Kang that has appeared is more similar to Immortus who did go sans mask
His answer was very much in Humor Mode, he does like playing Vision, but he always liked how easy of a paycheck doing JARVIS was.

Note that the Iron Man in-helm shots were a clever way of getting around the need to have Iron Man constantly take his faceplate off all the time.
Even then, Tony still exits the armor or loses his faceplate inordinately frequently throughout the films. The movies are full of shit like the start of Age of Ultron, where Tony just pops out in the middle of an enemy base during a siege. Exposing himself to potential enemy fire is a small price to pay for that sweet, sweet face time.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.At long as we get that green cape.
And not make him into a neon Sex Doll
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Weridly, I felt that trope of "always showing the actor's face
" was in full effect in the most recent What If…? (2021). As an animated series, that show is already dealing with more stylized designs of their actor's likeness.
x6 Really, that's because Dafoe looks scarier and more Goblin-like without the mask.

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks Marathon

It's not like James Spader ever showed up onscreen in Age of Ultron.
