Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I've always gotten a kick out of Linkara's joke that comics Aunt May is always "one oversalted Hot Pocket away from death". Mainly because it's so true.

Not... really. Batman's general thing is having a lot of general and in-depth information about everything, and being able to use that info to make educated guesses and complex plans on the fly, mostly because his detectiv-ing is most commonly used simply to expedite the plot: if he already knows X about Y and can think up a way to take advantage of X immediately, the plot doesn't need to explain those things. But the whole "prep time" thing, especially, is more or less a myth.
He's not really a "make plans heavily in advance" kind of character, at least not usually. There are one or two major exceptions, but due to being fairly iconic they also tend to be exaggerated into being the rule when they're not really typical of the character on the whole.
Again, not dissimilar to how Strange is written: where Strange has a huge range of magical knowledge, but beating whatever the new threat is tends to be a function of figuring out a way to use that knowledge on the fly to not get killed.

Strange I think does end up doing more elaborate plans than Bats, but this is also a function of how his stories are set-up. Batman is often pitched as "Batman alone (and his allies) vs a overwhelming evil force" in a more direct manner. Strange often has the shtick that there's a lot of equivalent and opposite cosmic forces so when a evil force of the cosmos rises, Strange's plan quite often involves trying to convince, bargain, coerce or manipulate cosmic forces to actually do his job for him to some extent because he's outgunned by the evil at work here. So by default Strange ends up having to practice a lot of more elaborate rusing to deal with the many factions of the cosmos.
Batman doesn't do the "playing enemy factions against one another" too much. Not his style.
There's also the additional point that Strange's powers, by their very nature, are reliant on outside forces (i.e magic is often drawn from somewhere, usually deities). Jason Aaaron's recent Strange run was largely about the debt any kind of magic incurs and how Strange has to run a complex chain of schemes to make sure those debts don't blow up on his face.

"All you Fascists bound to lose."There was a Siver Age Dr. Strange storyline that I really loved that involved Eternity and the entire Earth being destroyed and put back the way it was because of Strange's machinations. One bit that really stuck with me was when the narration really hammered home that the Earth was destroyed. This includes YOU, THE READER. YOU DIED. The only reason you're alive right now is because this comic is explaining how Dr. Strange brought the Earth back, but you totally just died a minute or two ago while you were reading this comic, and you didn't even notice it.
That bit fucked me up as a kid. Like, obviously I didn't buy it, because the illustration for "you dying" was someone who looked nothing like me reading the comic in a setting that looked nowhere like where I was, but it still amazed me to realize that you could even DO THAT. Write a story that broke the 4th wall SO HARD that it KILLS AND RESURRECTS YOU, THE READER. That's INSANE. If you read this comic, YOU canonically DIED and WERE REVIVED in the MARVEL UNIVERSE.

Maybe have an epic battle where we see entire universes getting erased and resurrected within the blink of an eye, then one universe is destroyed and the movie goes completely black. The picture resumes with that universe getting resurrected and someone says something like "that's not fair to target that universe, they don't even HAVE superheroes".
Although, maybe the narrator route would just be cooler and more epic, though that would require the movie to have a narrator from the start.

That's kind of how I hope the Watcher is used in the future. He shows up to delineate the fourth wall or some such ("In one universe, all of us in this room are fictional characters...."). Maybe Strange loses and talks to The Watcher into rewinding the clock ("I have sworn only to observe. But there will soon be nothing left to observe beyond those on the other side of the screen...").
"All you Fascists bound to lose."DC also kind of did this by having Earth-Prime (which was supposed to be "our" Earth) getting destroyed in Crisis on Infinite Earths, but it was more of a "yeah, uh huh, sure" there considering Earth-Prime had a Superboy with powers and everything. Its destruction was a plot point in a bunch of crossovers later on thanks to said Superboy surviving and turning evil/into a stand-in for whiny fanboys on the internet who just wanted everything to go back to when "everything was better on my Earth!"
According to Word of God, our universe was also destroyed in Secret Wars 2015 and reconstructed by the Richards family, we just don't remember it. Okay, obviously not our universe but a fictional stand-in for it, but still.

Of all the things at risk, the loss of an objective reality is perhaps the most dangerous. One of my favorite parts of Daredevil and Luke Cage were seeing how mundane, semi-realistic crime organizations operate in a world of superheroes, with stuff like Cottonmouth's mounting frustration at Luke Cage repeatedly walking through his operation and wrecking things.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!I'm trying to avoid too much rumors and leaks about the future films, but I'd find it hilarious of Multiverse of Madness managed to feature a cameo by Jeffrey Combs as Doctor Mordrid, considering that started off as a Doctor Strange movie.
I'd like to see a business talk in a casual setting with Bullseye.
Like a bunch of crime-lords come to Bullseye with a job while he's doing something perfectly mundane like playing baseball or golf, effortlessly netting continuous home runs and hole in ones. Then the scene ends pretty dark as he then casually kills someone with an impossible shot.
Its a fun thought.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."

Evil bastard that I am, I always loved that part. It proved that this was truly a Spiderman movie.
It had everything. Heroes, villains, and Aunt May in the hospital.
That last one is true devotion to detail.
One Strip! One Strip!
