Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Didn't it come back in Annihilation Scourge 2 years ago where they proceeded to kill Nova a second time?

I do like it when the MCU uses strange as a guest character in other films. His apparences in Ragnarok, Infinity War and Endgame were big sucsesses for the character, so I'm excited to see him in No Way Home.

I think Marvel know he works well in that role, given that he's seemingly getting a lot more guest appearances than other characters get.

On a side note, it is oddly fitting that one of Doctor Strange's worst foes, Shuma-Gorath, is in many ways a living cancer on the multiverse.

How so exactly?

To be fair? To Shuma-Gorath it’s pretty heavily implied that he had a tentacle in the cancerverse

It’s not just a place that’s also cancer. It’s a universe where your lovecraft adjacent horror terrors convinced the superheroes to kill Death to save Captain Marvel Mar-Vell

Marvel Reportedly Developing a Werewolf Halloween Special for Disney+

the Wrap reports Marvel is working on an untitled Halloween special that will film early next year. It’s looking for a Latino male in his 30s to star, and who might be cast as Werewolf by Night, a name from Marvel Comics that’s been used for multiple characters. Beyond that, nothing is known about the special and Marvel had not gotten back to io9 with comment or clarification as of publication.

I like Doctor Strange but more for the lore and the choreography of his fights than his personality, which I still find to be pretty much Diet Tony Stank.

The legend has returned.

It's fine, I've just been a bit pissy lately. Will try not to let it leak through onto posts.

Huh! A Halloween special? I'm up for that, it's something a bit different.

I wonder if these Halloween and Holiday specials are going to become a semi regular thing.

Some more clips of the Raimi Spider-trilogy.

Damn these fights are hardcore. Peter and Ock really went all out every time.

The intenseness of the fight scenes in comparison to the MCU's makes me wonder if the age rating would be different for those films if they were released today

Strange is one of those characters I really wish I could like because his lore is really cool

But unflappable ultra powerful chessmaster type heroes are just never gonna be my thing. I like seeing heroes get beaten and outsmarted, at least some of the time.

He's more of an indy ploy guy than an unstoppable chessmaster.

The latter implies he's always running circles around his baddies when in reality its far from it, being more on constant desperation gambits.

That was actually the one thing I disliked about the original Strange movie (Other than Kaecilius only being given one really good scene)

I wish the "Dormammu, I've come to bargain." scene wasn't as played for laughs as it was.

The Jason Aaron run was pretty good about beating Strange to hell and back

I haven't read any complete runs prior to that.

Probably not as while the fights feel really intense there's not a tremendous amount of blood or explicit/implied deaths - Goblin's skeleton bomb and the hospital massacre in 2 aside (and even that hinted at far more than it actually showed.)

Yeah, Doctor Strange is always the underdog in his own series. Because as powerful as he is at times, most of his enemies are much stronger and have much more practice when it comes to scheming.

And even the ones that aren't stronger are not to be underestimated either.

Disgusted, but not surprised

Speaking of the Green Goblin, I can make a good semi-serious argument that he's now the most evil MCU villain out there: because he busted into an old woman's bedroom while she's reciting the Lord's prayer and instead of doing what a normal villain does, he lets her get to the "and deliver us from evil" part and then peaces out. Only a true Card-Carrying Villain would pull that shit.

The legend has returned.

So is Batman, but that doesn't stop fans (and occasionally writers) from Flanderizing him into the latter anyway.
