Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

If there exists a pair of British guys from the original comics, have Stephen Fry in there with Laurie.

since it looks like they're adapting One Day More I'm hoping Mephisto shows up somewhere, hell I'm kind of hoping Mephisto is impersonating Dr.Strange here, that would be a really clever twist,on the other hand I get that the infamy that surrounds that story means disgarding most of the source material in favour of something better

Since Strange calculated millions of scenarios where the Avengers lost to Thanos, would all these alternate universes be ones where Thanos won?

[up] Given the events of Loki, there's also the possibility that the lone future Strange saw where they won was the only future the TVA would allow to exist.

That just gives me the amusing mental image of them stopping Thanos the "wrong" way only for the TVA to bust in like the Monty Python cops and declare the whole thing "too silly" for the Sacred Timeline.

If you think about it it makes a lot of sense

The “Sacred Timeline” is the one that leads to He Who Remains. If the Avengers had beaten Thanos on Titan or in Wakanda or if some charming space rogue talked him out of his plans early, that means the Avengers would never invent time travel for the time heist

Why is Strange wearing the Eye of Agamotto in the trailer? How did he get the Time Stone back?

Of all the things at risk, the loss of an objective reality is perhaps the most dangerous.

Maybe he didn't. Maybe he's just wearing it because it goes with his ensemble.

The MoM synopsis on Wikipedia says he's still researching the Time Stone, best thing to study when the stone itself is destroyed is its container I guess.

That's not such a crazy idea. Like, the Arc reactor tech is based on the Tesseract right? So it stands to reason that even if you don't have the Time Stone anymore, maybe there's still a way to create the same effect without it.

I'm just....not really into the trailer. Guess I prefer Spider-Man more down to Earth.

[up] That was one of the many arguments why Mephisto could not be the solution to the Clone Saga, and why he should never have been considered the solution to Spider-Man's 'problems' in 2007

The writers won their argument in 1996, they didn't win it against Joey Q

Honestly, I hope Spider-Man having a public identity is permanent, what bothered me about the original comic is that they first made Peter reveal his identity just to apply cosmic retcon.

With few exceptions, the cosmic Retcon always seemed to me a thing of cowardly writers.

Oh it was infamous. Joe Quesada went on record saying that it won't be undone by a Magic Retcon, when no two words are more appropriate (as stated by This Very Wiki a couple of years ago).

Maybe the moral of the story ends up being magic retcons are bad and Pete has to own up to his responsibility.

Comics are often victims of the Status Quo.

-A hero can reveal his identity, only for something to happen to make his identity a secret again anyway. -A hero can retire or die, so his Sidekick takes his place, only for the hero to return from retirement or revive in a couple of years.

Finally saw Black Widow (2021). I'm confused with the resources and personnel related to the Red Room.

The movie tends to treat the Red Room and HYDRA as separate but considering how the Red Room in 2016 is a floating fortress reminiscent of the Helicarrier, how exactly are HYDRA and the Red Room supposed to be separate?

Pretty simple: HYDRA was founded by people who worked for the Axis while the Red Room was made by the Soviets. Not exactly two groups known for getting along.

The legend has returned.
