Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Do the original Spider-Man movies count as casually super? They're a lot campier than the usual grounded superhero movies of the time.

The legend has returned.

Yeah Sony's deal says at least one other MCU hero has to be there. Hence why Tony and Nick were big parts of the last films.

If Marvel really wants to get around Sony’s obligatory cameo mandate (unlikely), they could always have Spidey team up with Drax. tongue

[up][up][up] Not really, Spider-Man is the only confirmed Superhero in the setting and neither Kitchen Sink exists.

Okay, so all this is really cool and everything, but... am I the only one still wondering what happened to that Scorpion tease from Homecoming? Like, they've not done anything with it for two movies now, it's weird.

If Maguire and Garfield's versions of Pete really are in this, I wonder if we'll get some info on what happened to the latter after his second movie. Canceled-on-a-cliffhanger is my Kryptonite. tongue

For me my qualification of a setting being casually super is the acknowledgement that stuff happens in between each movie. The hero actually faces other villains and builds up a history and its not just the only time they face villainy is during each movie which means that they only faced a handful of bad guys their entire career.

A good example of a not casually super setting is Wonder Woman 1984. Takes place nearly 70 years after the first movie but apparently Wonder Woman has not fought a single supervillain since her confrontation with Ares in 1918. Her confrontation with Maxwell Lord and Cheetah are the first majpr threats she's faced since then which makes it look like Diana has effectively sat on her ass for the better part of a century.

[up][up][up] I guess he'll appear when they bring Vulture back.

One thing no one has mentioned (at least that I saw) is that this is only in theaters. No Disney Premium or whatever.

I did expect a lot of apologizing to theater owners at Cinema Con so it makes sense.

Do the original Spider-Man movies count as casually super

The Raimi films? I don't think I'd say so. They're very traditional superhero films, and it generally came off that "super" things were rare. They're really good examples of films where it feels like exceptional things only happened in the characters' lives when the cameras were rolling, and anything out of the ordinary always got a lot of explanation.

I tend them to use them as an opposite example for casually super. Like, that the Spider-Man films and their take on villains and heroes and superpowers are what traditional films' approach to being "super" is like, and what casually super stories try to avoid.

Here’s my qualifications for a “Casually Super” setting.

1. The Fantasy Kitchen Sink and the Sci-Fi Kitchen Sink are unambiguously at play.

2. Superheroes beyond the protagonist are shown to exist.

3. Doing In the Wizard is uncommon, it can exist, but it’s well counterbalanced by the sheer fantasy of the setting.

4. The main character is not the first Superhero, many have come before them.

[up][up] You know, it just hit me that the MCU Spidey villains have low onscreen body counts.

Like, Mysterio had to have killed some people during his various global attacks, but that's just because of the scope. We never see him kill anybody. Likewise Vulture, who was explicitly a thief, not a murderer, and whose only onscreen kill was an accidental offing of a minion the movie made extremely clear was an Asshole Victim.

Come to think, it was like that with the Raimi films too. Goblin turning a bunch of characters we've met before into skeletons right before our eyes is unique even among that series' villains. I wonder if Raimi just couldn't resist terrifying the audience a little on his first foray into superhero films.

Just saw the trailer and it was fantastic! It seems like this film is going to set up a darker tone from the first two Spider-Man movies and I'm interested in seeing how Peter will deal with everything in this movie.

I'm really interested in the time traveling aspect of this movie. I wonder how they will approach the idea about Peter's friends and family forgetting about him being Spider-Man and how the time traveling plot will affect the MCU as a whole. Also, it was great seeing Doc Ock come back again! Hope we get to see Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield make an appearance in the next trailer!

The official teaser trailer has already confirmed what people like us already knew:

  • Doctor Octopus, Electro and Green Goblin will team up take down Spider-Man and his alternate counterparts. Same with the Lizard and Sandman too.
  • There is a lawyer present with Spider-Man who may or may not be Daredevil since his face is kept obscured in the teaser.
  • Alternate universes will play a big part in the film's story and it will set up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
