Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So, we went from "Wanda is going to crack open the Multiverse in WandaVision" to "Loki will crack open the Multiverse in his show" to "Peter Parker is a dumbass and messed with a mind wiping Doctor Strange spell that somehow leads to other dimension villains showing up". Apparently.

It's filmed from a cellphone, which is filming a cellphone, which is filming a cellphone that is playing the video.

We need to go deeper.

Hmmm. As much as I like what those alleged images are telling me, it stretches my head to see William Defoe. I freaking loved his Goblin, but surely there's no way you can include him without retconning Spider-Man 3 out of existence, given that there's an entire plot point over his lethal injuries being definatly lethal and from his own glider. Makes me worried. Also this film still has me worried it's going to be of way too big a scope. Super glad to see those three actors back though

People were already speculating it would drop this coming week prior to the leak, so maaaaybe?

Anyway this is one way to avoid rehashing characters that already have an on cream history, just grab the history and continue it. I like the idea of Spidey having to go toe to toe against a Doc Ock who has twenty years experience on him. Regardless I'm hoping that if Tobey and Andrew are in this film, they are smaller roles and the focus is still on our Peter. Save the Sinister Six for the fourth film too, when everyone has established beef with our Peter.

Fun fact: the head of Marvel’s digital security cameoed in Captain Marvel as the parking lot guard.

I guess he’s unleashing his terrifying security powers on some unfortunate temp right now. tongue

Well, I watched it in my cellphone.....

So when’s the trailer coming out officially?

Allegedly, it's supposed to come out during Cinemacon, which starts tomorrow.

So did Peter and co. try protecting his secret identity by showing a Skrull disguised as Peter Parker next to the real Peter in his Spidey suit, or were all the Skrulls back in space?

(I don’t know if I should be spoiler tagging something that seemingly didn’t happen. tongue)

The true identity of the leaker revealed (not really)

A more serious question: If Peter’s problem with Strange’s spell is that it will erase everyone’s memory of his true identity including Aunt May, Ned, and MJ, couldn’t he just tell them again?

If it's supposed to come out tomorrow and the leaked trailer is such low quality, they'll probably stick to the original planned release instead of posting it themselves like they did with the AoU trailer.

About Norman being here for some reason: Well, Otto's around and he was pretty obviously dead in Spider-Man 2, so I don't think canon deaths matter in multiverse theory.

The legend has returned.

Another leak says their memories are cut off before their deaths and it leads to them just viewing Peter as an enemy

Well the fact that Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborn will likely return for Spider-Man: No Way Home means that Tobey Maguire is going to appear in the film alongside Andrew Garfield for a live-action adaptation of Spider-Verse.

Also, it appears that Doctor Strange and Spider-Man will cause a multiversal crisis that will lead to Secret Wars (specifically the 1983 and the 2015 versions).

I'm not even going to watch the leaked trailer. One, because I don't want to be spoiled, two, the videos might look shoddy, so I wouldn't be able to see anything clearly and three, it's not fair to the company that their trailer was shown too early.

Killmonger is a strong example of a problem I've seen come up several times: the villain has an obvious point, which corresponds to a real-world problem. So then they throw in some despicable moments to make them suitably villainous
But he was already doing despicable things. He's just using the race angle as an excuse to trample on other people. He only see traditions as a means to get power. In fact BP made a point that it wasn't him that made T'Challa consider opening up, but rather Killmonger was a result of the mistakes of the past and that he didn't want more of that to happen. If anything it was Nakia who showed it.
The portrayal you're gonna get is the one that says the system should be reformed, not torn down, which is also going to be controversial in lieu of events from the past year alone.
But he doesn't want reform. He wants to be the emperor of this new system which practically follows who ever is on the top.

And on that note I've seen some really disgusting takes like "Oh no, these people want status quo! Better have good boy CIA to help!"
