Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

IMDB personal ratings are easy to dogpile so I don't trust them either. Just make your own opinion.
For example I disliked Doctor Strange a lot, but the real unpopular part of my opinion is that while I definitely hated the whitewashing, and that contributed to my dislike in a small way, mostly I just found it an extremely mediocre film in all regards except the CG, and with severely below-average writing to boot.

That's what I have primarily heard from people who disliked the film though. There's this one ranking of MCU movies online that keeps updating with each new film and it has Doctor Strange only ranked above Iron Man 2. Bear in mind though that list ranks Infinity War and Civil War outside the top 10 and Age of Ultron in it.
I saw both Civil War and Doctor Strange when they came out and I remember thinking they were enjoyable enough without really caring otherwise. I was astonished to find they both had RT scores in the low 90s. I'm generally not much into newer movies anyway, though I do appreciate the better MCU films. My favorites are Iron Man 1 and Black Panther.

Not really. IMDB uses a weighting system which filters out people who only log in to the site to put "1-2"s and "9-10"s and gives higher weight to votes of people who regularly rank something and give reasonable ranks.
They don't disclose how their algorithm works exactly to avoid people gaming it, but you can click on the votes and see the breakdown, and the result usually won't be the arithmetic mean.
Like this:
- What If
<— here they seem to have filtered out 1s.
- Black Widow
<— here they discounted 10s.
It usually takes a while for the ratings to settle though, so when a new film or TV show is released, the ratings won't be reliable until a couple of months have passed.

Of all the things at risk, the loss of an objective reality is perhaps the most dangerous. In regards to Every Frame a Pause and Mau Ler, they have at least watched the films and TV shows they either like or dislike, even going so far as to show clips from the original source. They've even done livestreams where they show most or all of it. So while they aren't above criticism, they've taken their time to see specific movies and shows (especially MauLer).

That's quite literally the bare minimum you should do if you're making a video essay about something. What's the alternative, make a video deconstructing something you've never watched?

Yeah, no, I don't know much about the first guy but Mauler's critiques are all shallow critiques disguised as deep by length. No, seriously, the guy is worse than Hbomb, he can go at it for hours. His bashing of TLOU 2 alone has, like, 50 parts (it brings in money, since haters are still at it). His other... issues I'm not even going to get into.

Collegehumor made a funny sketch about that

The Final NameNotice how not a single film Mau Ler has done a rage video on has a RT score lower than 30%, and only two have scores below 50%. Needless to say I agree that no movie needs a 4-hour video explaining what's wrong with it.
He needs to make it nearer the end so there can be something about flying too close to the sun
Forever liveblogging the Avengers
x3 Ikaris survives till the end, fights Sersi and then flies to the sun
I mean it, it is a real spoiler, don't read any futher if you don't want it!
There is apparently an old leak
for the Eternals that says exactly that. I've just found it today. Up to and including the "flies to the sun" part. It now seems very legit.

Somehow I had a feeling Mau Ler was more popular than he really is and was surprised no one brought him up. Must be spending too much time on You Tube and/or with the Star Wars community.
Either that, or the MCU and Star Wars fandoms don't overlap that much, which I've also suspected of being the case.
